  1. I am not sure about a course, but maybe more education could be published in and around the ethics of bow hunting.

For a couple months before the season I practice with my compound from tree stand heights. I also bring the target with me to my stands and shoot each different laneway at the target. Afterwards I mark with trail tape the pin/yardage I used by the target for the kill shot.

Sounds maybe alittle extreme, but it is EASY to be fooled by distances. And it is deflating to have everything fall into place after so much effort to miss an animal for lack of prep or practice.

That being said, no matter how much prep and practice, things happen.

It works for me and I have vital shot every animal after doing so. Before I had a tendency to tickle their bellies with the arrow :)

  2. Chances are you spooked them. One may of been trying to call a fawn that may of been with it.

Usually a loner doe with give a giant snort (clearing their nose IMO) before they bolt. Scares the livin heck out of ya when your walking to a stand in pitch dark and walk up on one.

  3. Give it a shot bud, hope it works out for ya.

I don't bait anymore, after years of hunting a property we figured out their paths to and from bedding areas. Pretty cool actually, the big boy (14plus, haven't seen him this year, though I took his son a 10point a couple days ago) uses a row of cedars maybe 10 ft wide through hardwoods, and always 1 hour before shooting time. I am hoping one day to catch him after a long night with a ladie and he is running late. They are big for a reason! :D

  4. I had the same qualms about drum before I tried it. But next spring I'll definitely cook up any I catch in the 3 to 4 lb range (never seem to get any smaller than that for some reason). I plan to try smoking them too.

I have caught a ton of them over the years and come to think of it, I have never caught one under 3 lbs that I can recall. Things that make you go hmm. :D

  5. Great shot on the grouse!

Maybe try bringing the apples/carrots for a couple nights after midnight or early morning 2-3am. Pain, but may bring them around later (within a 1/2 hr before sunrise anyways)

While to sit, but if they are around while dark, you may keep them close and call'em back.

Worked for me once, coincidence, maybe.

  6. Ran a charter and guide service for a few years. Ran all 4 seasons, year round.

You may solicit quite a few opinions on this from various guides, but I'll share a tid bit of my expereince.

IF you love fishing and are looking for a hobbie biz/excuse to get a fancy rig thats fine. Maybe raise some moola to help pay your way to fish.

You have to be diverse and experienced angling wise. Things happen on the water (weather etc..) and you have to sometimes have 3 or 4 back up plans to get your paying clients on fish.

Full time, man, there is maybe a handfull I know that do it. Couple are on the board here. I used to, but with a young family to support and spend time with, there is NO way.

Unless you can support everything on one body of water year round and reside close. My experience and research lead me to believe you had to be diverse and cover a large area and various styles of angling to not limit yourself.

Over head is very high, (boats, trucks, gas, high-end gear, oil, insurance(s), maintinance, boat supplies, memberships etc...) Gear for various styles and target species ie. downriggin, bass, muskie, steelhead(rivers), ice fishing, flatline/planers etc.. Adds Up!

It was fruitful for us, even hired guys to help out. For us, you were gone for most days from 5 am and rolling home around 8/9pm. During our fall Quinte and winter Niagara trips I'd be gone weeks at a time.

Sure I had a blast, loved alot of it, but with anything things change when your passion becomes your only avenue to put food on your kids table.

If you have more specific questions, you can pm me if you'd like.

  7. A crossbow by definition of the federal firearms act is not a firearm. There was a thought of classifying it as a firearm at one point which is why certain people have crossbows listed on the back of their PAL. It never came to fruition. An item becomes a firearm when it's projectile reach's 500 feet per second or more as well as meets a specific muzzle energy factor.

In terms of hunting, the provincial hunting regulations classify any item used to hunt game as a firearm. This means that crossbow's are subject to all of the requirements of long guns. Namely whether it can be loaded or unloaded, encased at night, etc.

Whoever said the crossbow was a weapon is mistaken. Weapons are used to inflict harm. In the case of sport shooters, hunters, farmers, etc. Firearms are not weapons, they are tools. A baseball bat used during a game is a tool, used in a back alley to beat someone is a weapon.

Either way, when you are hunting a crossbow is considered a firearm and if there is a no discharge bylaw where you are, you cannot use archery to hunt game.

Thanks for taking the time register and post a reply. You are obviously someone in the know.

  8. Like Sinker said,

    Smaller boat waters, centralized.

perch/crappie in April (cooks bay only) Roaches boundry

    Pike in may - Canal/ cooks bay / ?

Walleye in early june - Rice / Scugog / ?

    Bass in July - Cameron / Scugog / ?

Classic Bass/Walleye combo in Sept. - Tri lakes / Quinte (Bay only)

    Just a couple ideas.

  9. Brian, I have shot my two biggest bucks in the crappiest weather.

One was a snow storm with huge wet snowflakes, barely see a few feet infront of you.

The other was brutally windy, rain, and cold. He was right on me, couldn't hear a thing.

So peel your eyes, in the rut the horn dogs will travel their run no matter what weather.

    Good luck bud,

    Phil

  10. Doug, I wasn't quite sure what was happening last Sunday, thankfully all my symptoms matched above. Thanks for the post.

    I survived the wine flu.

Wish I had of known about the McDonald happy meal though, the Taco Bell burritos were not a good choice. Figured if the hot sauce could shine a penny, it might help clean me out.

Also, the partner showed the rollin eyes symptom, but also a total lack of compassion and patience. Maybe it is mutating.

    Brilliant,

    Phil
