motor trouble killing my bass opener week !
DanD replied to Toad Hunter's topic in General Discussion
I’d be careful testing ignition wires that way; a heart deliberator uses something like a 1000 volts to start or STOP your heart. Ignition coils even on a magneto system can produce up too or more then 30,000 volts. Yea I know almost everyone has been shocked at least once by an ignition wire of some sort; but all it would take is for that voltage to pass through your heart and you’d be done. Go get yourself a hand pump spray bottle filled with a salt water mixture (one table spoon of table salt to 8 or 10 oz of water) and set the nozzle to mist. The salt will act as a conductor and show you even the slightest of voltage leakage. Remove whatever covers you need as to gain access to the ignition wires. Start the motor and then lightly mist the wires with this water solution. If there’s a bad wire, wire insulation, carbon track or crack on the coil tower(s) you’ll see what looks like miniature lighting bolts traveling across the outside of the wire or wherever there is high voltage leakage. The motor may even begin to misfire until the water has evaporated. Easy test do it under low light conditions makes it easier to see, if there's anything to see. Dan. -
Maybe check out the nearest National Grocers Cash & Carry. They use to only sell to businesses with a vender’s permit but about a year or so ago they opened to the public. I use to get my smokes and variety store sundries there when I ran my gas station; they were as cheep as any other wholesale supplier. Dan.

X2 You never know it might be your looney that broke cancer's back. Lets make this year's event the best one yet. Proud to put my name on this thread! Dan Durnez AKA Dand I'm a cancer victim without having cancer myself; are you?
-
Cancer has just put another notch in its belt. I lost my niece to stomach cancer yesterday. She was diagnosed a little less then 3 months ago and everything went down hill from there for her. Below was taken from the Simcoe Reformer obits. SKINNER, Stephanie (nee Berdan) - Of Port Dover, passed away at Juravinski Hospital, Hamilton on her 41st birthday, June 20, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. Much loved wife of Ronald. Devoted and proud mother of Sean and Shannon. Stephanie was a Child Welfare Supervisor for the Children's Aid Society. She had a wide circle of friends and co-workers that will miss her, but will hold special memories of her loving spirit. She was an inspiration to her family for her strength and courage. Friends are invited to meet with the family to share their memories of Stephanie on Friday, June 22, 2012 from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm at THOMPSON WATERS FUNERAL HOME , 102 First Ave., Port Dover (519) 583-1530. A Service to Celebrate Stephanie's life will be held in the funeral home Chapel on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 2 pm, followed by interment at Port Dover Cemetery. For those wishing, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated. Online donations and/or condolences can be made at www.thompsonwatersfuneralhome.ca11472635 Her kids are 8 and 10 years old and this frigging disease took their mom from them on her birthday. Maybe not the right place to post this or if it belongs anywhere on a fishing board; but its just another reminder of how important it is for all of us to pitch in however wherever we can and help beat this disease. Thank you for the FISH-A-THON Ryan & Dan. Dan.

If it were me wanting trim tabs I would go power or not bother. Yes these smart tabs will work when everything in the boat is equal weight wise side to side. But what happens when you invite your 400 pound buddy and he plops down in the starboard seat. The boat will list to his side until you’re fully on pain and the smart tab shock can overcome the force of the water (if it can at all) and start to push the tab down leveling the boat. With power hydraulic trim tabs you’re holding that tab down where you want it, forcing the boat to level much faster. Plus you can then tweak the tabs from side to side, until you’ve got the boat’s ride where you want it. And like Terry said trim tabs do rob power but the power tads can be set all the way up level with the hull when you don’t need them, reducing this drag if not completely eliminating it. Dan.
-
That tab (fin) is to compensate for engine torque; in other words you adjust that to take the pull out of the steering when under power. There must be some form of extra weight on the side that it is listing to; that when the boat is on plain and much of the hull is out of the water; this weight is causing the boat to lean? Dan.

We’ll be out in the pack, drifting between Bait Island and EC10 of Long Point Bay. First time in close to 20 years that I haven’t had my own boat; so I’ll be hitching a ride in my eldest brother’s. So if anyone sees a white (trimmed in black) 28 foot Chaparral with the name Just Once “Again” that’ll be us. His radio is usually scanning between channels 68 and 69; so give out a yell and say hello. Dan.

Bump I’ll be up in Beteau so I won’t be able to make it to the event; timing is not on my side. But it’s too good of a cause not to do something; so here’s my offering for the prize table. What boater wouldn’t have a higher comfort level knowing they have one of these tucked away in case of a dead battery? You can’t win it without showing up people; Ryan & Dan need our support, plus it sounds like a good time, with a free BBQ at the end of the day! Dan.

I agree that if your motor is already down all the way, it needs to be shimmed down. (prop pointing on a more downward angle when trim set fully down) The HP of the (your) motor has the ability and power to still lift the bow past plain and on to the bouncing that you’re feeling. The whole idea of power trim is so that you can compensate for different weight distribution (one two or more people); so adding fixed weight to the front is just a bandage for the root issue. When set up properly you should be able to take off from a dead stop with the trim all the way down; that’s to hold the bow down. Once up to speed, you start trimming up, until you can feel and here a RPM increasing without a throttle change and the boat leveling out. Go past that trim point for the weight in the boat and it will start to porpoise. Your motor (I think) is posibly set to close to water surface level line and you cannot drive the bow low enough under power, to stop it from bouncing. My last boat that I had, had enough range with the power trim that if I was by my self or with four people; I could still plain the boat without porpoising and the only difference was top end speed. Dan.

I've seen your set up in the burb Brian and if I'd have the need that's what I'd do. Dan.

Thanks for the replies; every bit of info helps to fuel the fire. For everyone that has posted on the different treads about Beteau and the Attawapiskat River; you have helped so much in getting us prepared for this trip, I say thank you again. On a side note and if permitted (edit if need be mods) I’m going too put in a plug for Steve and Lambeth Rod & Tackle. Stopped in there yesterday to pick up some gear and Steve went out of his way trying to help us. He didn’t try and up sell, showed us what we asked for and when all was said and paid for, he hands us a couple of lures free of charge. Got to like going into a small shop where they still care and know the stuff they’re selling. Thanks Steve. Dan.

The last I heard from Eddie (3 weeks ago); he said the weather had been brutal with rain and cold temps. “As I type this Dan there is 6 inches of snow on the ground and it’s still coming down”; that was taken from Eddie’s email to me. But that was better then three weeks ago, so who knows what it’s like temp wise now? Moosebunk with you having fished the Attawapiskat and with these high waters; would you chance your tactics and presentation? That’s a lot of water; do you think they’ll be a bit more scattered? Or should we still look for the “normal/new” structure and depths and not worry about these extra high central basin depths? One last question with this higher water levels will there be that much more current to deal with? Sorry for all the questions but this has been a dream trip for my brother and I; I’m so pumped and it’s still a month away. We’ll be at Eddie’s July 12th for a 9 day stay at camp and I promises I’ll report what we find once we’re back. It won’t be a Moosebunk or Solopaddler report; I just don’t have their ability in text; but I’ll answer any questions the best I can. Dan.

Thanks Lew. Michelle (my daughter) has a vested interest as to whether this guy tries to get off on the charge. She’s pissed and you don’t want to piss off a 26 year old female lawyer and think you’re getting off scot free. LOL She said something about the Crown, professional courtesy and exercising the full extent of the law. Not 100% sure what that all means; but I'm glad I'm not the target. Dan.

I left that part out in the first post; the vehicle we were in is a 2012 Chevy Traverse; one of the demos from the dealership where my Cathy works; the frigging thing is/was brand new! Her boss knew that we were travelling with six passengers and luggage, so he offered this 7 seater for us to use. I guess when theyre done fixing it; itll even be newer, with a rear bumper cover and more then likely a replacement hatch. Not sure how many will notice the slight buckle in the one rear ¼ panel. The thing was slated to be sold as a used vehicle after it stint as a demo; so they wont take to big a hit on it. I wish we were in my Avalanche; the trailer hitch would have gone right through his rad and left the putz waiting for a tow truck. Dan.

No not at all; after we got to the hotel Saturday afternoon and unpacked for the night; I cracked open the bottles of Scotch and Drambuie. Rusty nails make for a very good sedative; a couple of those, a good meal and all was well with the world. They did make waking up Sunday morning and getting ready for the grad a bit tougher; but those are the sacrifices we make for our kids. LOL Dan.
-
Well we made it there and back somewhat safe and sound. The grad itself went off without a hitch, it was great watching my daughter up on stage accepting her law degree. But getting to Ottawa wasn’t quite as boring as usual; you got too love the 401 and all the crazies using it. Just outside of Port Hope, my wife is driving in the farthest right lane (slow lane?); doing about 115Klm with the cruse control on. I notice her look up in the mirror and all I hear is OH (she didn’t have time to say crap) and then bang; some idiot just drove into the back us. Yes I said we were doing a 115Klms an hour with the cruise on? Instinctively she starts to brake but I tell her NO accelerate as hard as you can away from him and then pull over when it’s safe. She did and we get stopped about a 1/4 mile down with this idiot pulling over behind us. My son and I get out and run back to this idiot, yelling what in the hell were you thinking. His reply was “I sneezed” and the next thing I knew I hit you????? SNEEZED how frigging close were you that you sneezing caused you to accelerated into the back end of us; I’ve never seen a Hyundai Santa Fa with rocket boosters or nitrous oxide. And it was a good hit as well; pushed us to up over 120 and that was with my wife’s foot on the brake and him pushing us. This idiot was lying through his teeth; why wife saw him enter our lane form the centre lane, passing a car that was to the left of him. He was trying to get pass that car and then pull around us but ran out of room. So it was hit the car beside him or pull back in and hit us. He was one of the slalom freaks you see all the time on the 401; you know the type, they’ll dive into any lane just to get ahead of the vehicle in front of them; zigzagging their way down the road. Now the guy gets real smug with us, saying there’s not much damage and there’s no one hurt; so let’s just exchange info and be on our way. I don’t think so buddy the cops have already been called. The real sad part is I don’t think this guy had any understanding of the danger that he just put all of us in. He kept saying there’s not much damage; it’s my fault I’ll pay for it. My son had to pull me away from him a couple of times. I warned him, if you say “what’s the big deal” one more time; you’ll be sitting at the bottom of the ditch wondering how you got there; it was my turn for a sneeze. Here’s the best of all; he had what looked like a 14 or 15 year old in the passenger’s front seat and a toddler in the back! Gee I wish I had a dad that cared that much for my safety!!!! All said and done buddy gets a careless driving charge and we were all sent on our way. As far as I’m concerned a careless driving charge should be the same as impaired. This guy should not have been allowed to continue; right until the end he still didn’t understand what the big deal was and he showed no regret other then being caught. Here’s a picture of my daughter in her gowned and my son, the referee that kept me from being charged with littering the 401 ditch. Dan.

Thanks for the heads up on the fishing; but if I brought my tackle with me I’d also need a pen. That’s to sign the divorce papers my wife would have ready for me. LOL And yes she’s an Ottawa U grad; she’s the first lawyer in our family; after she passes the bar exam that is. Dan.
-
You already have your dandelion problem cure and you’re not using it. Get out there and start picking kids; no supper until all I see is green. LOL Dan.

This goes out to the Ottawa people; I’m heading up there this Saturday for my daughter’s graduation ceremony Sunday morning. Is there anything you might need from London (with-in reason) that I can bring up for you? I can’t offer a ride to anyone (the vehicle is full); but a package no bigger then an overnight bag, I’d have room for. Just throwing the idea out there? We’ll be staying at one of the downtown hotels and plan on arriving around 3pm and the whatever could be picked up there. Dan.

Boat is delayed from Dealer... I complained !!
DanD replied to cityfisher's topic in General Discussion
I’d be making a counter offer by handing them an options list with all the things you might want added to the boat. You may not get all of them but if you’re considering the different motor you may get a few extra toys out of them? If your sales contract has the delivery date on it; you got more bargaining power then you think; don’t just accept the scraps they’re throwing at you. Not that the Otimax is scrap by any means; but it’s not what you wanted, ordered and they promised to deliver. Again if the delivery date is on whatever contract that you no doubt signed promising to pay and there are no disclaimers where they can wiggle through; you’re the boss; make some demands. Dan. -
Well I have a French last name (that no one pronounces properly) and I've lived and worked as a mechanic in London for more years then I want to remember; but I never owned a tow truck or lived on or near Exeter road. So I ain’t your man; especially if he owes you money. LOL Dan.

FORD First On Race Day And I'm not even a Ford fan. LOL Then the vehicle I like GMC Garage Mans Companion and maybe that's why I like them I own a garage???? Dan.
-
JoshS All the different vehicles suggested here will likely do the job you want it to do. Just do yourself a favor once you find something that interests you; go to an independent garage away from the seller and have the vehicle checked out. It doesn’t matter that the vehicle is safety checked and emission tested (if required in your area) neither one is a guarantee that the vehicle is in good condition. All a safety certificate means is that on the DAY of inspection the vehicle has met all MINIMUM safety requirements, set out by the MTO. Plus by having this inspection done before you sit and talk money; this garage may find you some bargaining power. Yes the brakes pass a safety inspection; but there’s only 4mm of friction material left. That means 2 or 3 months before a brake job. Same goes for other mechanical things away from the safety inspection. There could be oil leaks from one end to the other and unless they are “severe” oil leaks they pass safety inspection. It may cost you $75 or $100.00 for this check but money well worth spending. I actually do these checks for my regular customers free of charge. If they buy a decent vehicle I have a decent vehicle to work on and everyone is happy. Dan.
