  1. Used to go to Elephant, Baptiste & Benoir Lakes back in the day! All three lakes are excellent for fishing with Elephant being the shallowest & weediest of all three. Baptiste is deep in areas and is more of a Shield lake as is Benoir! Great chain of lake to be on, stay in the markers while navigating between Elephant & Baptiste, lots of stumps off the channel!
  2. Yes, you can use the new GPX Import/Export feature on your app! Here is the link to the directions on the Navionics website https://www.navionics.com/usa/blog/post/new-gpx-import-export-and-more-for-sharing-in-the-boating-app
  3. Just posted a pair in the Classifieds if anyone is interested!
  4. A pair of black NAT's EVA boots in a size 11 so it is good for someone who normally takes a 8.5-9 shoe size! Liners included, rated to -70 degrees C, brand NEW in box never worn! Firm asking of $65
  5. Yes, it is easier to look at with the Nautical charts on rather than the SonarCharts!
  6. Not really sure what you are referring to but the numbers on hydro-graphic contour lines are indicators of depth. Not sure what letters you're referring to?
  7. I hope that some members were able to join in on the Facebook "LIVE" "EVERYTHING FISHING" Chat with Bruce Tufts last week and that you found it informative and entertaining! I'm hosting Part III of "The Science Behind Fishing" this Wed. May 6th at 7:30 EDT on the "EVERYTHING You Wanted to Know About FISHING but were afraid 2 ask..." group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1421921441322251/ This week, I'm going to have Dr. Steven Cooke from Carleton University in Ottawa. We'll discuss what his Fish Ecology & Conservation Physiology Lab is up to these days. Dr. Cooke and members of the Cooke Lab are working on some very interesting subjects and theories regarding the science of catching & releasing fish! This stuff always intrigues me as I'm a strong believer in that knowledge is key and the better you understand your prey/quarry the better an angler you're going to be! Hope that you can join us and bring your questions and we'll answer as many as possible!
  8. The SonarChart Shading gives you a is a hi-definition relief shading which gives you a different view of what the bottom might actually look like. For me the greatest use for this is during the planning stage and aids in possibly locating that spot on a spot. Remember when you look at regular hydro-graphic contour lines, a shoal/hump looks exactly the same as hole/ depression until you read the numbers. The Shading same as coloured depth shading makes it easier to determine what it really is at a glance. Of course as with all features, people are going to be more comfortable with one view or another. In most cases, it really is a matter of what they're used to.
  9. Usually it is a Navionics+ that comes with units! Just keep your mobile subscription and you'll have access to this feature!
  10. That's a question, that only you can answer! For sure you should keep your mobile subscription current simply for the SonarChart Shading & Fishing Depth Ranges! In Canada, it's only around $30 annual. Now as far your chips go, there currently is a rebate on renewing your subscription so it is not as expensive as one might think, if you want more details - https://www.navionics.com/usa/update-your-chart If you happen to travel to different areas, with a current subscription on a card you can select new maps to download. If you use advanced features like dock to dock auto-routing and other advanced map options you want to be current as well. There are significant updates done each year, just depends on your region and how many are uploading data. larger bodies of water like Lake Ontario, St. Lawrence River etc. Navionics/Garmin will record their own data! If you only use the very basics and don't travel out of your region, you probably could update every other year. Again your decision! Hope that this helps!
  11. This is about the Navionics Boating (mobile) App but the feature is available on the Navionics Platinum+ & HotMaps Platinum cards as well but not on the Navionics+ card.
  12. Hey for those of you who are interested in the science behind fishing and are on Facebook, come join me next Tues. April 28th at 7:30 PM on the "EVERYTHING You Wanted to Know About FISHING but were afraid 2 ask..." group page https://www.facebook.com/groups/1421921441322251/ as I will be talking with Dr. Bruce Tufts, Professor of Fisheries & Conservation from Queen's University in Kingston! Dr. Tufts is one of the foremost experts on Smallmouth Bass behaviour, populations and biology in the world. He is also the person behind the practices of the Shimano Live Release System that most tournaments' live release are based on. Most recently, he helped put forward a proposal to create a "Early Season Catch & Release Season" in FMZ 20 along with a delayed opener for Smallies out there! Please join us and bring your questions and we'll try to answer as many as possible.
  13. Correct! That's why it's such a great deal on the Navionics Boating App!
  14. The only Navionics chip that you access this feature with are the Platinum+ & Hotmaps Platinum cards! So if you have either of those then YES!
  15. Yes, but you can switch back & forth! It would be too confusing to try to look at the color shading and the SonarChart Shading at the same time! Also put your setting to Nautical Chart instead of SonarCharts when you're using the Satellite Overlay with SonarChart Shading, it will be clearer!
  16. Mini tubes and hair jigs beneath a slip float is the best way to catch them! Because of where their eyes are located they always feed upwards plus who doesn't love seeing a float go down!
  17. I truly believe that once you believe that you've learnt everything there is to know about fishing, you might as well give it up! I am always learning in this great sport and that's part of why I'm so passionate about it and sharing with others! The challenge is always there and will be until my dying days! That being said there are those who I believe are very intuitive when it comes to fishing and are very good naturally, whereas the rest of us have to work at it! I still get excited when I believe that I've learned something new and can't wait to get out & give it a try! Next to actually fishing, my favourite thing to do is to talk fishing and I strongly believe that you can learn from everyone, even if it's what not to do! LOL
  18. So up until very recently, the Navionics SonarChart Shading feature only covered the Lake of the Woods, Namakan & Rainy Lakes in north-western Ontario! While I was checking out the NEW Navionics mobile app that now includes this feature, I discovered that most of the Trent-Severn Waterway from the Bay of Quinte up to Port Severn, the Rideau System, St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes are now covered as well! I understand that they are still working on more in Canada but that's a huge improvement! I've including some of the screenshots from my iPhone for different bodies of water now covered up here!
  19. I don't think that you'll be disappointed, I still believe for what it cost, that it is probably the best value in fishing/boating! One app will work across all your devices regardless of whether they're on a Apple/Android platform. You can look at your maps when you're off your boat, sitting on the can, etc. You can save markers(waypoints) to it, very useful if you go to other lakes or on other peoples' boats. If you ever travel and need weather/tides it's all on the app! Enjoy!
  20. Hey Peter, You have to decide whether itโ€™s worth it to you to have it or not! Cost for an annual subscription is around $30 annually! The SonarChart Shading gives a 3D look to your charts and you can also use the SonarCharts and colourized different depth ranges to make things stand out more! I know that even on lakes that I know very well, when I see a different chart, I usually notice something that I didnโ€™t see before! But if you only fish one lake and figure you know it well enough then...๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š
  21. Yeah, they just recently added Simcoe-Couch, Bay of Quinte, most of the Kawarthas and Rideau system! They added more to the list all the time! It'll just take time, up until recently only Lake of Woods and a few other lakes in Northwestern Ontario had this feature.
  22. If you have a current subscription on the Navionics Boating App on your mobile devices, make sure that you update the app and check out the latest feature on the app! You now have a multiple chart-overlay option with the Navionics Satellite Overlay with SonarChart Shading. No additional cost involved here. This feature was previously only available on the Navionics Platinum+ & HotMaps Platinum cards. There are not a lot of Canadian Lakes available yet but I'm told that they're coming but all of our neighbours from down south have lots of options. Check out the details here - https://bit.ly/2KafK15
  23. The chat went great, lots of engagement! At this time, at least being able to talk fishing helps cure the itch somewhat! LOL
