Unless it's for very specific presentations like topwater (straight braid) or spy baits (straight fluorocarbon) virtually all my reels (certainly spinning reels) are loaded with braid mainline and a fluorocarbon leader (usually 3 to 10 ft long). I attach the two lines using an FG Knot (slimmest knot for passing throught the guides), but an Alberto knot works well too. It gives you the best of both worlds...maximum sensitivity and hooksets, with the least visibility.
For ice fishing, check out Sufix Ice Braid...it remains very flexible in low temps, and the coating sheds water so it doesn’t ice up.
