irishfield Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 Always open side of the hook facing rearward. So up behind and hang, otherwise a rock flying up can kick them off. Never had an issue and it's NOT an offence to have them. It is "recommended" to have closed hooks. I've been ticketed for "not displaying the device".. which equals an annual safety sticker on the truck and trailer. Threatened about S hooks and told them to add it to the bill.... they couldn't!
ch312 Posted July 9, 2011 Author Report Posted July 9, 2011 ok, so it doesnt matter which way you put the hooks on when you have spring clips? but, if you don't have spring clips then you should hook from underneath. does "up" or "down" affect the breaking strength of the hook?
Tybo Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 The hook opening should be facing the trailer. This way it will not unhook when the tongue is push under the tow vechicle when stopping. The hooks will rotate around the mount.
