icedude Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 Can someone explain why the fish do this? The prevailing thought is Silver Carp jump-as high as 6 feet-because of the vibration caused by boat propellers-who knows--maybe they just like to jump ID1
Billy Bob Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 Yes I agree but not in the way that you do. The biggest risk of these fish spreading via a market is through them being sold or used as baitfish. So if you are serious about removing the danger by removing a market, the sale of baitfish is where you need to point the finger. It is through the use of small asian carp as baitfish that has lead to their spread in the states not their sale in a fish market. Good thought process......here in NYS we already have those laws in place to prevent the sale of unwanted baitfish contaminating our waters....ALL baitfish have to be CERTIFIED here within NYS to be sold and or transported. I'm not sure the exact laws in Ontario but I thought Ontario had a similar law preventing the transportation of baitfish outside certain boundaries....but this is small potatoes when you look at seafood markets that can make a lot of money on a fish that has a faithful following because of it's culture.
