cantermore Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 just read http://www.ontariofishing.net/news.shtml and its seems using crayfish is over; I hope thats not permanent as thats my favourite bait . . .
knotaclue Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 I thought you just can't sell them.never said you can't use them,at least thats what i thought i read
cantermore Posted November 18, 2006 Author Report Posted November 18, 2006 much easier to buy then cathc, i acutally never have tried catching them but may have to learn now.
Lungelarry Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 Hey Johnny try using tubes and plastic grubs, they represent crayfish. And artifical bait is always easier to use than live bait. Good luck...
Big Swede Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 Catching them isn't all that hard, and you can always get your kid on the case. But yeah, plastic crawdads are far less pinchy that the real ones!
cantermore Posted November 18, 2006 Author Report Posted November 18, 2006 True & True on those last 2 ports; I was actually thinking about getting the kids on it next summer... never have been pinched though; always a first time
Cookslav Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 They are still legal bait, just can't commercialy harvest or sell them. I prefer the plastics as well...never had any issues with the real deal until a small "incedent" while walking the boat through some shallow water this year.....lets just say I suddenly realized the rock in my sandal was not a rock LOL The Little my mom hates me hurt...
The Urban Fisherman Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 Yeah, i've also moved over to plastics myself - it's nice not having to keep anything alive , BUT from time to time I like to use the real deal - especially if I've got some first timers with me. They're easy to find and catch at night with a flashlight, or you can just bait a minnow trap with a few dead minnows, in an area that's well known to hold a lot of crayfish and within a night or two you'll have more than what you need. Good Luck UF
cantermore Posted November 18, 2006 Author Report Posted November 18, 2006 Crayfish I am guessin are typically in rivers with rocky bottoms? I am usually up on Simcoe or Couch so will be hard finding them up there I think
knotaclue Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 Pretty sure i saw a trap forsale in one of the mags, think it was bps
bigfish1965 Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 You can catch them with a minnow trap as well. A hung of fish meat and put it in a rocky area and check in the morning (crayfish are much more active at night).
FishHeadRic Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 I used to make traps for them out of 2 liter bottles. Just cut the tops off the bottles where it starts to bend and invert that section back into the bottle. Cut some holes into the bottles lower section and put some rocks into it to weigh it down. Bait it with fish guts or a head of something and you're set to go. The Crayfish will be able to crawl into the hole but not find their way out. Just remember to write your name and stuff on the bottle when you leave it. FHR
dsn Posted November 18, 2006 Report Posted November 18, 2006 I used to catch tons of them just by a net and rubber boots. Where? Grenadier Pond. Walk into the pond with rubbers and place my net behind a rock the same side I would be lifting up the crayfish would just dart out straight into my net. We had some huge ones. Most were infested with parasites and worms but they were still healthy. I also have crank bait that looks like a crayfish. Actually have 4.
