silverstreak Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Can anyone tell if this is a chinny or a Coho salmon fry. Fish had a white mouth. Thanks.
ccmtcanada Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 (edited) Hmm...hard to say...found this image on the net....I'd say it looks closer to chinook though When I read the thread, I thought you were frying them to eat....lol Edited June 10, 2008 by ccmt
ccmtcanada Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Here's another shot of Coho fry that I found...
kickingfrog Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 IDing juvenile salmonids is not easy... its not rocket science either. You usually have to use a key. The book "Fresh Water Fishes Of Canada" is very good. I'll try to dig mine out.
jace Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Did it roll or make straight runs when you were fighting it? That'll tell you which it is. heheh. anal fin. most likely a coho.
kickingfrog Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 I'll say Chinook based on this key that I made up when I was in school. The key for adult salmons, trouts and chars is different than this one for juveniles 2-5 inches long.

kickingfrog Posted June 11, 2008 Report Posted June 11, 2008 Ya, I caught so many 4 inch salmon I had to make that key
