Nice fish for that spot. I've been catching there between 12-22fow. So far we put in a lot of hours between anything over 20"...but alots of action and stretches youre gas budget. Look forward to hitting the river again later this week...heading downstream in search of the toothy critters.

Take a close look at the hull design and thickness if you are planning on fishing big water. Sooner or later you will get caught out in it, also its nice to not have to limit your days fishing. I can tell you that the Lund IPS hulls are about the best on the market, they keep you dry and handle big water very well. Have a close look at the 1950 Tyee and the 1875 Impact Sport. They are a lot of boat for the $ and are finished well inside. Just got back from a tournament this weekend and we ran 22km north into a north wind that was 30-40km. Glad I was in a Lund. When comparing motors, take into account the cost of servicing a Verado, which, if I'm not mistaken needs to be done at the dealership for warrantly (not certain). This brings down the cost of the Opti further. On a side note the new verado pros are nice....and fast!

7km is far from the school to get alot of tenants. Usually has to be something special to attract people from that distance. Lots of cheap places within walking distance of the school. Whoever mentioned the bylaws on renting to students was right on, when I left they were really getting sticky about it. Live in res or at Columbia townhouses, get to cook your own meals and have more space, still a very low fee to live as well. Get the car and go fishing....some awesome smallie fishing to be had right in town. The big girls stack up in late Oct in the deepr holes.

Apparently all the details will be released at a press confernce at 11am from the MTS Center. I'm anxious to find out the ticket prices, but will take in a few games anyways. GO JETS! (or whatever your called)

One cold front does not mean a wholesale exodus of shallow fish, they more likely reduced the distance they were willing to chase and hit a lure, slow down and fish more methodically. Roy hit the nail on the head...

I like 2/3 lard and 1/3 butter for the too few shore lunches I have these days. At home its usually canola. Sometimes a panfry in butter is a good change too. The mess kit is packed and ready for this weekend...lard, batter, Bush's beans, spuds, onions, peppers and fruit cups. And no beer!! Introducing a buddies 2 youngsters to the shore lunch tradition...should be a good one.

To get your hands on an ulu send an email to the Co-op manager in a smaller town. You will get charged 5-10x more in Iqaluit for the same thing. Great trip, hope to get to Pang myself next winter for a char netting session.

Sasquatch, Bigfoot, Yeti, Samsqansh, anyone else intrigued?
troutologist replied to Harrison's topic in General Discussion
I am intruiged more by the phenomena surrounding the sightings than the thought of a bipedal primate living undetected in North America. If you spend enough time in the bush, you are apt to see and hear some very odd things. What are people seeing or think they are seeing? Is the idea of sasquatch a part of human mythology across many cultures? The monster lurking in the shadows or night? I am curious about the way if there is a report of someone seeing one, how a number of others see it in fairly short order. Not too different than the problem bear reporting in Ontario, sure there are more bears in the woods, but does this increase in population corrleate to the increase in reported incidents, or is the increase in reporting due to the spotlight being placed on the issue... Few things are more entertaining than reading eye witness reports (ie. "....me a Cooter was out drinkin' and shinin' deers when we seen...") That said, a couple of buddies have some stories that are very difficult to explain the occurances. I'm interested in hearing more thoughts/stories on this. -
My only steelheading of 2011....man it went by too quick, however, it was AWESOME!!! Great few days back in the waders. Still might be sick this fall and have to take a few days off (Dx Chromium deficency...)

I think you sent me this picture. What a day!! 2 more days until some floats will drop. I CAN'T WAIT!!

A report of the Last Few days.. (Steel and White)
troutologist replied to archie_james_c's topic in General Discussion
Archie, that rod balances nice with a matrix reel, I had the 5" version on it previously. The SST2 is a great reel for the $, not sure who's carrying what in town these days after the fishing store shuffle, but I'm sure Okumas and Raven are still available locally. Also I picked up a Sheffield for next to nothing at the place in Mackinac City, worth calling down anyways, it was well worth the drive to pick it up. The rod has beached a few fish in its day, lots of fun in the rapids during the salmon run, you can turn some brutes with it. -
This is a take off from the older LIO stuff the MNR had. It wasn't readily available, however. I suspect a lot of this info is somewhat antiquated, and having been and supervised summer students, the accuracy of the data entry may not be 100%. Interesting tool, as always one part of the puzzle, those who look to it for all the answers will be dissapointed, those who use it to supplement further research will see its benefit. I hope there is always a good portion of info left to personal discovery by those inclined to put in the effort. Though I suspect limited access would always limit the anglers even if a website said, "trophy brook trout here -->"

Ya its definitely ripe. But still not a bad way to spend 6 weeks a year...hopefully once I climb higher in seniority, I can stop being the one to dress up like a walrus and roll around on walrus/polar bear inhabited beaches....I thought that was what summer students were for???
-
I fly around in a twin and look for walrus. Also sneak up and attach satellite tags to them.

Those are pretty cool, I too have a wallet and business card holder. Its been about a year now and they are both holding up well....which is a surprise since my wallet gets used more than it should. Too many new, shiny things at the tackle shop!

Cabela's Announces Third Canadian Store
troutologist replied to craigdritchie's topic in General Discussion
The store here in Winnipeg, is OK, sure theres a pretty good selection of lots of stuff, and its 1 of 2 stores selling guns in town. My business goes 95% to a local shop Pro Am, tough to beat customer service from a guy that knows whats happening. I'm a believer in supporting stores that work to take care of their customers. Cabelas instore service in Wpg has been less than stellar, though my experiences with the cabelas.com have been excellent. They recently, added an in store bargin cave which has some excellent deals....still its not like the US stores. -
If you've got a bowmount trolling motor, look into a quick connect plate which has holes for locks predrilled. Somewhat of a deterrent on an easy to take part of the boat. Also the quick connect allows easy removal of the motor if you're really worried about it.

Thanks guys, the fishery is unreal. If you are willing to be mobile you can have some amazing days for numbers and size. @ Weedline - the last few weeks definitely high skies were the best days. Morning bite was more pronounced but most if not all the big fish came from 1-3pm.

As March 31 draws near fishing in MB is on hiatus until May 15. I've been out 5 of the last 7 days fishing Lake Winnipeg, chasing giant greenback walleye as they begin to stage prior to pushing upstream to spawn. This time of the year is a real workout on the auger and operator, ice is around 48" thick and you really need to move to keep on top of schools of roaming fish. If no fish show up on the screen in a spot in 10 mins, its time to move. 10 mins after the last fish was caught from an area, time to drill out in all directions to track the school...this could be one of those new diet fads, drill 75 holes a day in late season and results are guaranteed...actually this holds true in fishing as well. Never let the fish go uncaught, for the lack for drilling one more hole. Stay safe as the ice melts.

Nope get non-pneumatic tires. Foam or solid rubber...talking to those old guys pulling the carts for a number of years they had found what didn't work the best. They also rigged solid handles to come out in front of the canoe, so 2 people could pull standing up leaning into the bar.

Lund (pro guide) tiller. Its the best boat going. Decent clothes and cold weather is no issue. Mine was in the water from March 28 until Nov 29 this year...dress for it and wear goggles or shades. Tillers have bigger casting decks, more room overall and better control. I've got no use for a windshield.

Good luck this weekend. Apr 20-25, shirk all responsibilities...its going to be steelhead madness. Prepare yourself. The soundtrack

Nothing better than getting up into dimer, GB and GW....good to see that there are still some fish around. Lots of snow still? Good work buddy.

Call the park office. Call the Wawa MNR office re: stocking lists. Look at canoe routes, generally these are going to/through lakes with good fishing. Its an awesome park with excellent opportunities for fishing, camping and hiking. Many of the lakes hold naturally occuring populations of brook and lake trout. These are sensitive populations. Good luck in your research.

So I was just barely getting through with an extension on the auger yesterday, it was in the -20 to -30 range all weekend. This isn't helping!!! Great fish guys, can't wait for open water!
