  2. Quick update.

All in all 32 landed bass yesterday. I took a few small breaks throughout the day when the bite turned cold, then I'd return an hour or so later to the same spot, and the bite was on again! Very fun day, was great weather wise, about 24 no humidity and barely a breeze. Water temps were actually fairly cold, about 70 degrees, down from 74 the day before. Lots of fish, but most were in the 2-2.5lb range today, no real monsters. Also lost about 5 fish.

Heading out again here in about half an hour to the same spot. Weather looks calm and partly sunny, water temp a cool 68 degrees. I'll be interested to see how this affects them this am.

And on a side note, Jeff Gustafson took home the International Falls bass tourny yesterday, fishing right beside me at one point, and bagged a healthy 19.66lbs of smallmouth bass!!! Nice job Gussy!

  3. do walleye take a while to adjust to the dark

    I don't know but

do you have to take time to adjust to the dark...not if you are outside the whole time.

if you go from a lighted house to the dark you need to adjust, that takes less then a minute

walleye that the 45 minutes as the light levels are changing to dark, I doubt they need much more time once it's dark as they were adjusting all along

just logical thinking , not scientific

I didn't see anything in this topic that suggested walleyes need to adjust to the lighting???? Maybe my eyes aren't adjusting well this am? hehe

I know when I night fish walleye, I get out early for my eyes to adjust, it just seems easier for me, I'm not stumbling around tripping on things and such

edit. Sorry Terry. Some good points there! But I should have quoted whitbyboatguy, lol

  4. After a few slow weeks, the bite picked up big time!!!! Yesterday I went out and fished the shores and shallows from shore, went 17 for 21, in 5 hours. Those fish had bellies too!!! That doesn't usually happen until mid september, so now I'm all excited, hehe.

7 of those fish weighed over 3lbs, which is great considering I nabbed them in the rapids, biggest one was 19.75" and at 4lbs.

Tomorrow, the goal is to take pics of at least 20 fish, from shore. Might go out in the boat too for an evening bite? I'll keep you posted.

The plan is grubs on heavy jigs burned through the shallows, but we'll see how it goes. I just have that need to hook fish's

Hope you all have a great night and a great day tomorrow! Great fishing OFC, and as always, I'm jealous of those who fish lakers, salmon, carp, musky!!!!! LOL

  5. You can get these hooks in Bulk i believe.relatively inexpensive. NOW.........I for one, want to know, how and why did you get your hand hooked to your dogs nosewhistling.gif You cant just throw that out there and think we wouldnt want to know, did you?clapping.gif

Lol, sounds like an experience I had a few years back, shore fishing with my kids and dog. I was unhooking a small walleye and had too much slack line, my dog ran across chasing a frog or something on the shore and caught my line. It jerked out the jig and punched into my thumb and believe me it hurt like hell. Didnt help that my dog kept running either. That stupid prediciment took me about twenty minutes to get under control, it was a complete disaster. Left me with 8 stitches to the thumb too

  6. Had a close encounter with a boat running cigarettes last night...

Heard him coming so I turned my lights on... He then did a doughnut around my boat with a spotlight on me... I figured he was heading back for another load and was checking if I was a cop...

    That sounds pretty sketchy!

Yum salted dingers work well for nighttime walleye also. I use them mainly on a jig head and basically let them sit on bottom, or texas rigged with a split shot about 14" from the hook. I like the black/silver tail ones

  7. I dont see a ruined thread, i see people expressing thier opinions. And sometimes people make mistakes in thier observations or assumptions.

I had another member who pointed out that my Walleye pics had 9 fish in it, 1 over the limit. He appologized soon after finding out that there were 3 licensed anglers on the boat, and withdrew his comment.I accepted this and we are still friends.

What i see is 2 people experiencing a personality conflict and should steer clear of eachother in here.

Happens all the timedunno.gif even in the real world.

So lets not get our knickers in a knot, and congratulate Matt for his first Musky.

    I know i did.......

    logic bomb! lol

Congrats, for a second time, on your first ski! Great looking fish

  8. i love fishing topwater. didn't think that would work for eyes but i will definitely give it a shot.

going to have to look into this frog migration as well.

If your near a shallow sandbar, night fishing top water walleyes can be really productive.

It;s funny though, Harrison might chime in on his experience, but I find I have to have a very slow retrieve with a frog for top water walleye. I cast to my spot, let the bait sit for about 15-20 seconds, give it a quick jerk, then rest again. If I fish it any faster I never have any strikes. That might just be where I'm fishing though???

Another option is drop shotting minnows leeches or crawlers, works well before and after the bite really turns on, might help you land a few extras on your outing

  9. When walleye fishing during dark, I always do best around 11pm-2am. Around Rainy, the best walleye bite goes in certain time frames. 8pm is the last productive bite of the day for me, so the next feeding cycle starts around 11. I usually head out earlier though to get set up and get the eyes used to the adjusting light.

I like to fish sand and mud bottoms at this time, and anywhere from 1-12ft. Sometimes the walleye are virtually on shore, lol. I cast right at shore, just like bass fishing. I still use the same baits for the most part. But shallow cranks and flicker shads etc are a blast when there shallow.

I also like an area with some current, not heavy current though.

and as mentioned before, top water frogs and walleye are very fun, just not crazy productive. It's not everyday you get to experience a top water bite with walleye!

Oh, and I like black baits, anything black or with some black on it

  10. Ok, here goes.Spooled 10lb Nanofil on my Pflueger Asaro, lite spinning reel on a 6.5ft Fenwick HMX lite rod. Started with a Rapala DT lure

Sensitivity is very good.I could feel my lure tapping bottom, just like with Braid. No stretch at all.

It is however, very visible in the water. You may want to do like me and put about 2ft of fluro or mono leader on it especially if you fish clear waters.

I feel it added 10-15 feet to my cast, but thats hard to judge with precision. Changed to a 1/4 oz jig with mistertwister curlytail, and thats where i stopped being impressed.

The line left the spool very smoothly, with no noticeable drag going through the guides. There was no noise of the line rubbing on the guides, and the line stacked up evenly on the retrieve. When my jig hit bottom, and the line slacked a bit, the line coiled up.It Definately DOES have spool memory, like every other Berkley line i have used.To me anyway, coiled line means way too much slack in the line during hookset.I'm not talking a wavey line here. It was a tite, spiral twist when the line was slack. Now remember, i just spooled up a few hours before.Imagine a season on your spool.

I didnt catch any fish, but it muscled through a couple of snags really well.I really yanked hard to see if the strength was comparable to braid. It was.

On a scale of 1-10 i rate it at a 6. Low, because of the Berkley trademark spool memory.

I still prefer mono on my spinning tackle. The best mono i have used this year is Suffix Siege, 10lb.Smooth, as sensitive as any mono i have used, and NO line memory at all.

All in all, not my favorite line. I will most likely replace it on my reel with the same mono i just removed,Siege, the next time i use this rod and reel combo.

Thats a bummer. Wicked report though, many thanks!!!!

There is nothing worse than being excited about a new line, taking all the line off and replacing it, only to remove the new line and put back on the old line, lol.

  11. i'm interested in hearing how the Nanofil works. I'm still very happy though with my Suffix 832.

Just a thought, anyone having issues with guide wrapping should try to keep a closer eye on there line. Once I started paying attention, it never happens anymore. Same with my kids, and lord knows they used to have wind knots and guide wrapping down to a T, lol

  12. Yep, my uncle fishes a lot and he recommended I track everything in a spreadsheet. So that's exactly what I'm doing. Every fish I catch, I write down the time, lure, weather, species, size, location, etc. I don't wear a watch, so a good thing to do is if you have a camera make sure you have the time set correctly on it, and then just have someone take a picture of each fish (be fast if you're releasing, of course), so you can easily look at the EXIF data to get the times and look at the pic to see the lure, weather, etc. Works well for me, and the info I'm tracking will likely pay off in the future.

    That is so awesome! Hahaha

Yep, very good idea. Def. helps you remember important info.

And lol, it was pretty awesome to win the derby from shore. Also won the ice fishing derby too! Seems I know these spots very well, hehehe
