  1. Tough decision.

option 1- My in-laws retired to Costa Rica :)

option 2- I spent some time around Fort Frances when I was younger as a Junior Ranger with the MNR....awesome awesome place to fish.

option 3 - My dad's family lives out west in BC and my uncle has a 34' Commander boat in which we went on a week long cruise in the inlets....OMG...so amazingly beautiful!!!

Some many options, so little $$$ and time! LOL

I think she'll be an angler as well, as soon as I put a rod down it takes her .5 seconds to make it to the rod! lol

I got two girls as well that fish, but they were pre occupied on that day, by crawfish and frogs, lol

  3. Great family fishing report!! Sounds like a great time, and, I'm sure the boys didn't care that the 'eyes were smaller.

    Thanks for sharing!

It was a great time! I try to put my kids on numbers more than anything, thats what they prefer, and they find it more exciting. One lb or 10lbs doesn't matter to them, lol.

This weekend though were going for the mommas, haha thumbsup_anim.gifGonefishing.gif

  4. I don't understand why this thread had no hits???? Great topic IMO.

Here is one I just came across that I feel is great...

Never under estimate overwhelming stupidity in overwhelming numbers.

    This ones killer too!

  5. Well, another birthday for us to celebrate. This time it was my son Jigger, turning 7. He wanted to go fishing, so we hit the shoreline various times during the weekend. It's just the start of shiners running into the Rainy River from LOTW and Rainy Lake, and this means walleye start moving back into the river. Despite some really horrible conditions, we figured them out pretty good, and the kiddos had a blast thumbsup_anim.gif.

The water level is still really low, and the water temps changed by about 10 degrees, fluctuating up and down throughout the days, which can make things very tough. The all start bait of the weekend was Yum pink/white grubs on jig heads, cast into the current and burned back. No other methods produced fish, no other baits either, with a few exceptions (black grubs on jigs, and minnows on jigs).

We caught a good 60-70 fish, mostly walleye. All were dinks though, the biggest was maybe 15", the smallest being about 6". We kept enough for a family feed, the rest were released to fight another day.

Campfire hotdogs, frog catching, crawfish hunting etc all filled an adventurous weekend with my children, followed by some homemade pizza/breadsticks, and of course a fish fry. We ate good, had alot of fun, and were all reminded how much we have to be thankful for worthy.gif.

I actually had to thank my son for making my weekend so memorable, lol, thats pretty cool if you ask me!

    Hope you enjoy!!!

  6. Straw Lake. Man, we used to have fun fishing there especially for walleye. We could catch/release over 100 fish per day, in almost any weather. It was a fun spot too, so clear and you could watch fish take baits. It seemed that almost nobody fished this lake, even though there was easy access. Then it just died, we went every year hoping it would return to it's former self, but to no avail.

Now, 15 years later, it's drastically improved. My son went with grandpa this past weekend and they did great. He even managed two nice lakers, 4lbs and 6lbs respectively. His first two trout, and boy was he happyclapping.gif.

Rainy Lake as well, years ago after a massive invasion of cormerants over took the lake. It too has since recovered.

  7. This spring, I decided to take a really cheap crank bait, strip the paint off it, and tinker with the coloring. I used some neon glow in the dark paint from walmart (cost a buck), painted the lure, then added some horrendous eyes and covered it in shiny nail polish, then clear coat. It was so horrible looking words can't really describe it.

I went and tried it out, and caught bass after bass for an entire weekend. It outpeformed many of my fav. lures, like DT series cranks from Rapala, X-raps, flat raps etc.

I had zero confidence in that lure before using it. Now it's been repainted and replaced the hooks 2-3 times, and its still catchin fish. Many times it's now the first outta the box when I'm cranking for shallow bass.

    Yuck! whistling.gif

  8. Koppers Live Target Frog for sure! Nothing better than some top water strikes. Heard they're coming out with a soft field mouse lure too...

Harrison has pre-orders for them at etackle.

My fav. is a 3/8 oz. black jig with Gulp Alive emerald shiner

  9. I tinker with baits all the time and sometimes try really odd presentations. Sometimes they look good or sound good in theory, other times not so much.

Turns out that some really "ugly" presentations work at times, and before catching fish on them, I would say I had little confidence in them working.

But when something pays off, thats the fun part.

A pretty good example of this would be a slow death rig for walleye. The baits spinning and looks completely unnatural (when using minnows), but man, sometimes it works so darn well

  10. I slept over at my grandpas house the night before. I woke up and put on coffee and CNN which was our usual routine. As I made him his breakfast the commotion on the tv grabbed my attention and we began watching. This was just after the first plane hit. I really thought it was a movie or something at first, it was so surreal.

When the second plane hit, we quickly abandoned breakfast and coffee, and woke up my uncle to see as well. It was very odd experience, and as we started to watch people jumping from the towers it was such an akward, horrible feeling.

I stayed glued to the tv for the better part of three days, basically in shock.

I still shutter thinking about that day, and how it effected so many people. My heart goes out to all involved, and it was IMO a horrible day for humanity.

  11. I have been using small ziplock type snack bags for harnesses and put all of the small bags full of harnesses into a larger ziplock to hold it all together. It holds more and takes up less space than the lindy thing or pool noodles. Fits in a pocket, small pack, in a storage compartment in the boat, or in the tackle box.

I do the same. I also do this with my scented baits like Gulp! and Trigger X, that way if it does leak, I can just rinse it off and grab a new bag.

  12. One of my good fishing buds came for a visit last night and we had some cold ones while chatting about fishing. Well, a few hours later and about 7-8 tall boys, we called it a night.

Woke up this morning realizing that I can't indulge like I used too, lol. I still like to have beers, just not that many.

So in short, here is what booze made me do

    foodporn008.jpg

Walleye, eggs, panfries, bacon, english muffin and some ice tea
