  1. The only thing is bass will strike at anything at this time of year,no matter what you throw at them.

    Super buzz kill :sarcasm:

Not necessarily true though. Top waters are out till the water warms abit, they wouldn't hit spinner baits and they wouldn't hit live bait.

We did smash them on a variety of cranks though

  2. Nice!! I just painted a bunch up today...some silver, some flour green, yellow... i am going to get an airbrush...some great effects using those! Are you coating the lures with a tough finish? Envirotex works awesome but isnt easy to use and you'd need to make a rotating drying rack.

Tackle underground is an awesome site for lure making....i havent found any other sites nearly as good.

I'm not sure what I'm going to use for a finish yet? Still undecided on some things, so I'm gonna take my time and read through that site for ideas.

These baits were just whipped up to test color schemes

Yesterday and today they produced alot of fish though. Actually broke the rear treble hook today after landing 15 bass in about 2 hours. So, needless to say, I like the one color(glow chartreusse/sparkle)

  3. Very nice, manitou! But c'mon....you're in fishing paradise....they'll hit anything! Paint a lure up like a cigarette butt....I bet they smash it! thumbsup_anim.gif

lol, I wish it was that easy. It is paradise, I won't argue that, but the bass here can be famously finnicky, especially with water level changes

You gave me a good idea though, cigarette butt bass baits, lol

  4. I take it Bass season has opened for you?

There is a learning curve with the airbrush but you'll get better in time for sure.

Bass season never closes here :thumbsup_anim:

I've used an airbrush for almost ten years, so I have some experience. I haven't used one in the past 2 years though, so it'll take a little getting used to again. But, I've never used one to paint baits, so.... Yeah, I'll need lots of practise. Do you have any experience with this? Some pointers would be appreciated,

I'm sure I'll screw up a few layering jobs, lol.

  5. So, sitting around having coffee this morning and itchin' for some bass fishing later in the day, so I decided outta nowhere to do some tinkering with a few chipped baits outta the kids tackle boxes, lol.

I had went out in the boat yesterday and found some pre spawn smallies, so the plan was to dink with these baits then go out and test em.

These are very crude baits, I wanted to try some color schemes and wanted to be able to remove the paint asap, so I used some nail polish(hahahaah) and some neon fabric paint, followed with some clear coats.

Got out about 6pm and first cast, a 25" pike! Awesome, thats was really cool. Move to the bass spot and get three nice smallies in about 15 minutes. I'm on to something here with the color schemes, lol. So I'm pretty excited.

Can't wait for my other supplies to arrive so I can actually start working on my hundred lot of various cranks from luremaking.com!!!

  6. I'm working on a few crude cranks today, hopefully have them ready for walleye opener.

I'm not sure what cranks they are???? They are chipped baits from my sons tackle box, so I'm using them to experiment on.

They are cheap coating, so I used nail polish remover to remove the paint, took all of 15 minutes to have them bare. Took them out and dried them off with paper towel and the paint just peels right off!

These are plastic cranks, and I want to get some practice in while I contemplate the hundred or so blanks I have sitting around from this winter.

Can't wait to finish and try these out!!!!

  7. Just wondering if anyone can share some info on this park and the lake. I will be travelling up that way in july and hope to be staying there and doing some fishing for a couple days. Any info on the park and lake would be wonderful, thanks

Do a search, they have a good website, forget the addy though???

Beautiful campgrounds there, and great fishing right off the beach (walleyes)

I used to take my kids there when I worked for Weyerhaueser in Ear Falls

  8. I use canola, veg and bacon grease. Just depends on my mood/whats available.

I love olive oil for other applications, but burns at a low temp and isn't good for frying fish.

I once cooked some walleye in just pure butter, and man was it tasty. Big time pain in the but for doing up more than a few pieces though. Had to rewash the pan after each batch.

  9. Putting this up a little late, but just thought id put up a little remembrance of one of our hockey brothers.

28 years old and had life by the you know whats. Its a shame and my condolences

That is a shame. He was really entertaining player to watch as well.

Any idea what happend? I hear all these shows talk about him but nothing of what actually happened to him???

and it was very nice to see his old teammates/fans come out to celebrate his life, good on ya

    RIP

  10. The Great Bear, even though it's an hour from me on the northeast side of Fort Frances. It's def. worth it.

Tons of great selection, geared towards Rainy River, Rainy Lake and LOTW for the most part, so it covers almost everything.

Great ownership, very helpful. Great stories and fish talk (huge plus for me)

Prices I'd say are average, some things are great, others are what you'd expect, some of the higher end bass cranks and etc can be pretty high, but if you get to know them, you'll always leave with some free gear.

Last year I took home about 20 rapala Dt series baits that were in the discount bin, free of charge! lol

Plus 1 dozen med minnows to them means 3 dozen, lol, always a huge plus

  11. This is the best new show out there.

Me and a Harvey (Rainy River Adventures) will possibly be fishing with Barry this August for the Rainy Lake/LOTW episodes they are filming! Can't wait to see the production, Barry says it's amazing the equipment they have for this show.

    "DOUBLE HEADER!!!! TRIPLE HEADER!!!!!!!!"

    ahahahah, Barry is awesome:clapping:

  12. We call them safety pins.

I actually used some yesterday bass fishing. I'm still awaiting them to move shallower for pre spawn, so I thought I'd go check yesterday. I used a number of baits trying to entice a strike to no avail. Tied on a safety pin with a 3" Gulp leech and had a few really nice strikes. Water was fairly clear and choppy, so that shimmer of the blade looked great. I'd cast into the deeper water, about 28 ft., let it sink to bottom and start with a slow retrieve, rod tip down. Every few feet give it a light pop and let it flutter back to bottom. Got 3 really nice bass to follow right to the boat in the shallows and break water to strike just at the upswing into the boat.

These are pretty similar to a bladed jig head, but I like that safety pins are generally snagless

  15. you're a lucky man Simon - a lake full of fish in the back yard, a great family and awesome scenerythumbsup_anim.gif Where's that drewling with jealouosy icon? I love it up North - was one of my favourite runs when I was driving to pay the bills(although Montreal River at night around Lake superior PP was always interesting with all those moose eyes along the highway.) The stretch around Lake Nipigon is still one of my all time favourite drives.

You should see Dryden to Red Lake!
