  1. When you get new ID to replace expired drivers licenses or health cards, place the old ones in your fire proof box, or whatever you keep important stuff in, and boom you at least have something! I always keep at least one set of expired ID for myself and my wife, along with old passports. It's been 20 years since I lost a piece of ID , but damn it I'm ready if I do. I haven't lost much down an ice hole, other than a couple steel scoops. I lost one cell phone steelheading , an FRS radio while duck hunting and one rod and reel combo while salmon fishing off a pier many years ago!

Hmmm, sounds good in theory. They usually dont take expired ids, at least around here.

    Talk about rediculous.

I do keep a buncha stuff in my fireproof though

  2. I don't have enough of a scientific background to discuss this global warming thing so won't. I can tell you that when there are storms they are more intense and more frequent than when I was a kid. Talking to a Dock Foreman at Arselor Dofasco in Hamilton the incidents of "High Winds" that shut down their Ore bridges are 5 times more frequent of what they were 40 years ago. I keep a log of fishing outings here on Erie. We were not able to get out because of high winds more times last summer than the previous 5 years all together.

    Weather is a funny thing!

Im not all that old but the weather here is just strange.

Normally we had hot humid summers, decent amounts of rain, some windy days but the winds almost always stopped at night.

The winters were nothing crazy but we always had tonnes of snow. I have old pics somewhere of hopping off my grandpas roof for fun and it was like a 2ft drop lol.

Last winter was insane cold with moderate snow levels. Not too much but man it seemed -30 and colder for weeks on end.

This year we have 6" off snow on the ground, last week it rained three times. One day was +12.

Its just my observations nothing scientific. But it is neat to see the changes bi it good or bad.

When my grandpa died he had logs of weather and rainfall that he used for his gardening.

I kept it and read through some of it, not all, its pretty boring lol. But i got the jest the weather was much more stable in those years long gone by

  3. My phone comes with me but it stays inside my jacket in a zippered pocket. Keeps it warm too.

Ive lost glasses and a few combos. The glasses hurt, especially when you need them to drive back lol.

I havent done it in a long time however. But I did just replace my glasses as my others were 6 years old. My wallet is alot lighter thats for sure.

Even with insurance I paid $289 and my exam was $90 and not covered???

Total cost of my glasses was just shy of $700! OUCH!!

  4. It's a dry rain?? Best entertainment I've had in along time! I know from first hand experience that the dryer cold temps in Fort McMurray are more comfortable than -15 in southern Ontario. The work crews were outside many days in minus 40 temps. I was in a heated crane cab! LOL!

Yep. I was usually around grande prie and as far north as nearlandia.

All really flat so in those colder temps we almost always dealt with strong winds as well. The temps were just silly but I dont remember ever shutting down because of the weather. In ontario we stopped at -40 no matter what.

I just finished up a big solar farm in NW ontario and workers complained at -15.

    I was hot lol.

But I also where appropriate gear. Id rather be too warm then too cold thats for sure.

  5. If you plan on grilling meat over a fire it you have to watch what type of wood you use.Imo,softwoods wouldn't be very good.

The trouble with this part of NWO is the shortage of hardwood type trees, maybe that's not the case in Fort Frances area.

I've grilled over birch coals & the result wasn't too bad.

Ah very good point ive totally overlooked.

What are the best woods to use?

Ive always just used whatever, just like camping. Silly i never thought of that as a variable

  6. I have what is called an anxiety disorder... And as I'm told a form of PTSD.... I don't talk about my mental health much. But those of you know me... Know things are not as they were.

I tend to always speak when I shouldn't. Or speak my mind when it is not prudent. Laugh at the wrong time, and cry when I Shouldn't .... Yes I cry.

I have a loose wire somewhere...

I don't have very many friends... Because I have pushed them away... Out of fear that they will see who I am... Or ask the questions I don't want to answer.

Is this the life I imagined?.... No.

But I have realized my shortcomings, and am seeking help.

Help started 2 weeks ago... To deal with my demons...

So yes look at those around you.... You have someone you know that is in need, but had zero clue they have been hurting for years.

Be a friend... Be forgiving, but most of all just be there. It means the world.

    Yessir!
  7. Well part of that exposure sounds like a shoplifters wet dream."come steal from us, we dont call cops".

But maybe there is another reason behind not calling the cops so who knows.

Maybe it would raise insurance rates or something ?

Regardless this thief has done something very disrespectful

  8. Im not sure yet OI.

I haven't drawn up and plans but it will be made with rock, not brick.

I've built many fire pits for others but never with the intent of it being cooked on.

I know brick would be easier to level, but I like the look of rock slab much better.

I know I can get it level, I once did a 200ft retaining wall and had great results, just takes more work and creativity.

Maybe ill start looking online for some picture ideas. Not today though!

  9. The key to good results is temperature control. With an open fire it's almost impossible.

I'm not saying it can't be done but it would require constant attention.

Ive done your typical shorelunches which was easy enough. Ive done new york strips pretty easy as well.

Id like to cook some pork shoulder etc not over an open fire but just the coals

  10. Does anyone cook on an open fire?

I mean aside from fish and beans while camping.

I wanna build a nice firepit and it seems to me that it would be an awesome way to cook.

keeping that heat nice and even might be a challenge

  11. That puts me in mind of my two years in Victoria, BC.............even on days when it did not actually rain in the winter months, we had fog that rolled in with droplets. If you weren't being soaked vertically you were getting it horizontally. At the end of February 1974, I heard a radio announcement that the Greater Victoria Area had had something like FIFTY MINUTES of sunshine that month. Freakin' BRUTAL.

But it was a dry sunshine...

    Just going with the sillyness?
