Yeah Jacques...it is that ice road from the video a while back....but the only reason all those people are there is because its convenient....nobody has had anything over 17" all winter from what i've heard. The other end of Wabigoon Lake is much better in winter, but even then the bite is very much hit or miss....the reason why i spend so much time going for trout...the way i look at it....if i'm gonna wait a couple hours for a fish....i want it to peel line....lol. -

Hey Y'all, On return from my couple hours trout fishing this morning, i noticed that Bruce (from an ice fishing forum ) was in his ice shack on the ice road from town. I stopped in to say hi, and decided to join him for the evening bite(walleye). BRUCE'S SHACK ON WABIGOON ICE ROAD Got there about 3pm, nothing happening. We chatted and i spent most of the first hour explaining the ins and outs of my Lowrance to the guy in the next shack over.....he's gonna buy one now....lol. Around 4pm the fish started to show. But just like in front of our house which is the next bay over, all the fish showing were tiny. It wasn't till about 4:30 for my first proper bite....a nice fat 30" pike on my lightest rod....did not think i would get it out the hole....but did. THE OFC CARD GOT SLIMED AND RIPPED >>>>HOPE THIS STILL COUNTS. After that it was non stop tiny walleye for me, Bruce got a couple of nibbles but could not hook 'em. I was laughing cuz i could see Bruce's face pressed up against his plexiglass windows watchin me run from hole to hole........he finally took the window out to say hi. STRANGE MAN WATCHING ME(just kiddin' Bruce) ALL THE WALLEYE WERE TINY I did notice that Lew....also from the icefishing forum was 10 shacks up the road with his brother in-law....i kept yelling over but he could not here me. So when we packed up we headed over to say hi, Bruce used to work with Lew....small town dontchya know . Lew had a decent eater walleye....and a WHITEFISH!!!! I'd heard there were whitefish from some people, and others said there weren't ....as wabigoon is too shallow, even heard there were untill a hot summer 30 years ago killed them all....well there was the proof....they are still in there. LEW WAS OUT TOO LEW HAD A COUPLE OF NICE WALLEYE AND A WHITEFISH

Hi All, Went out this morning locally for trout. Did not take the snowmachine or shelter because its been +4 degrees C and raining for the last 4 days....crazy! Figured the lake was gonna be knee deep slush, and was right, good day not to try and haul the shack with the heavy as a hog 600 triple! would definitely have got bogged down in the slush....so went old skool today with my trusty plastic sled and elbow grease WENT OLD SKOOL TODAY <embed width="448" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" src="http://i263.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid263.photobucket.com/albums/ii158/vishuscirquel/oldscool.flv"> Pretty slow start...not much for 1/2 hour....plenty of little guys showing on the sonar...no takers. Then it got busy........ PLENTY OF SMALL ONES TODAY <embed width="448" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" src="http://i263.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid263.photobucket.com/albums/ii158/vishuscirquel/trout.flv"> Was only out for 2 hours, caught around six.....2 keepers.....rest went back. It was one heck of a mile walk out....knee deep snow all the way.....with 8" of slush underneath that.....but i was rewarded with supper....no complaints! YUM!

Exactly what i was thinking. al ot less cruel i would think than dragging fish around on a stringer, or put in a warm not so aerated livewell for hours, or just leaving the fish to suffocate and freeze on the ice.

Very nice walleye.....congrats.

I aint trying to pick a fight holdfast....but France is a large country, with many...many...many bodies of water. I own a cottage and converted barn in the Dordogne region of France, and holiday there regularly....not only is it an area litterally criss-croossed with natural rivers, it is just over an hours drive to the coast. Species cauht are Perch...millions of 'em, Pike, roach....kinda like what i think you call an Ailewife here....chub...very similar to the chub here...bream...tench, carp....they also stock the rivers too...all sorts of trout. The locals there eat most....but then it is a rural area. Then again i rember visiting Paris when i was 12 years old (30 years ago..i'm 42 now....lol...) and being captivated by the fishermen lining the banks of the Seine, catching buckets of perch....and keeping them for supper.

Hey Ben...welcome to the board...i think your bang on the money with your cultural observations. Having moved here from England 2 years ago i noticed exactly the same thing...of course there are regional variations in both countries that would challenge that there is a more eat what you catch culture....and that goes for a lot of the European countries as well. But i would have to say....IN GENERAL...yup....England and freashwater fishing is about Sport.....and over here its a sport where you get your dinner
