  1. Hi all, Wanted to try for more Burbot, never fished them at dark before so headed out wayyyy later than usual. I got slimed!
  2. Hi all, Self ICE-olation is going well, went out for crappie that were a bit slow so changed up lakes and went for Burbot instead, good fun.
  3. Good info, did not know that. The Crappie in Wabigoon Lake are interesting. I moved here in 2007 and caught my first one that summer, it was a slab of around 14” inches. Growth rates vary from place to place and from source of info too, but after studying up and factoring in the slower growth rates you generally get in fish this far north, I would say that the first one I caught was at least 10 years old. It was not until a couple years later that I discovered how to catch them consistently by accident one springtime. At that point there were very few locals I knew that targeted them or even knew what a crappie was. Once the word got out about 5 years ago they are very popular locally, and people think they have only been here a few years, but unless the crappy that I caught was one of the originals ‘introduced’ to the lake they have been in the lake for 20 years at least. I have heard two versions from 2 separate Conservation Officers , one said they got into the Wabigoon chain of lakes by way of the humble pelican, pelicans find them easy prey when they are shallow in the spring and full of eggs, they consume them, fly to other lakes, take a poo containing in damaged eggs and those hatch. The other version is a local guy, who has since passed away, introduced them illegally in the mid / late 80’s, It could be a bit of both but I tend to believe the latter.
  4. oooooh, that would sting a bit.
  5. Hi all, Living on Wabigoon Lake I have spent a lot of time chasing crappie in the past few years, this year the crappie bite has been slow so I have mostly fished for walleye. After good success at Walleye and Lake Trout I headed out with a buddy to try for some crappie. We found an area that we knew held fish in previous years, drilled some holes and despite reservations about being in 19'FOW (usually we go a little deeper on Wabigoon) the fish were there. It was not as frantic as it can be, with fish coming through every 20 minutes or so. Some nice slabs but mostly medium sized ones with a few dinks. Nice to get some panfish action for a change, got a plan to try for Burbot sometime in the next week too. Ultra lite rod, 4lb fluorocarbon line and a small cast master spoon tipped with a minnow head works for me while my buddy was using a similar set up with a small buckshot spoon tipped with pink gulp maggots. I got 10 and my friend got eight. We could have probably got our limits of 15 each but we packed up early as he was on night shift.
  6. Thanks! On this lake I am fishing a mud flat close to mid lake structure. I don’t fish deeper than 40’ FOW although the lake goes to 150’FOW. This lake is full of smelt which the whitefish are keyed into, small white tube jigs and even up to 4.5” tube jigs get the best results, tried everything that the collective wisdom on whitefish suggests, but white crappie tubes on a 16th oz jig head is best on this lake from my experiences. The bonus of the whitefish liking the tubes is that the trout love them too, as you can see in the video that BIG laker took a 1” tube jig. Hope that helps.
  7. I like the fish eye, linear is fine when you can see the view screen but when you can’t it makes it easier and more reliable to get everything in shot.
  8. Hi all, Went back to a trout and whitefish lake for the third time in the past couple of weeks. Thought I'd figured out that the whitefish bite early and the trout from around 9 am onwards. The whitefish were there but back to being aggressively curious but nothing else, mostly window shoppers, might be that when I did good on whitefish it was clear sky high pressure day as this last trip out was a warm, windy low pressure front day, any way, keeping track of weather conditions as I play around with the whitefish. The trout however turned on big time, managed to land three with a couple getting off and lots of chasers that didn't hit. By midday I was starting to pack up, again not bad for a four hour or so session. I decided to try for walleye before going home and got to another lake closer to home at around 3pm. Man had the wind picked up, but it was warm and because I wanted to hole hop for a better chance of a fish decided not to set the shelter up. The walleye gave me the run around, a couple of missed bites, a couple hooked but got off and landed a 19"er. All in all a fun day with plenty of action early on, slept well last night....lol.
  9. I had to go back, that first day was brutal, fun but hard to stomach that much bad luck in one morning.... lol.
  10. Hi all, Here is a video I made of my recent adventures with lakers and whitefish. I fished two sessions with a day gap between them. The first session was frustrating with lots of missed fish and so I had to go back and redeem myself, it was minus -30℃ on the morning of the second session, but as they say, revenge is a dessert best served COLD!
  11. Hi all, Got out for some whitefish and lake trout. Had not had a laker all year until today. Actually went to the same spot two days ago and managed one whitefish and some pike and lost two trout at the hole, one being the biggest trout I have ever had on my line, felt like throwing up. That first day there were tons of fish around but they were being finicky, so I went back today much earlier in the morning, it paid off! Had around 8 whitefish in the 24” to 27” range, a couple of pike and landed two lakers, the bigger one at 34” and lost 3 with numerous chasers, all that packed into 4 hours made for a fun morning. I was fishing in 34’FOW , pike and lakers were on a 4” tube jig, and the whitefish were going crazy for a 1” purple and white crappie tube jig on a blue and glow 16th oz jig.
  12. Hi all, more ice fishing video for y'as. This is a compilation of three short sessions I had about two weeks ago. Walleye, pike and a few whitefish.
  13. Thanks, headed back there with my son today, windy out there but warmer.
  14. Hi all, Got to mix my two of my favourite things last weekend, family time and fishing time. Went out at stoopid O'clock solo and got a few fish then returned home. My son asked where I had been while he was bowling in the morning and when I told him he looked disappointed, I said we could go back after lunch....BIG SMILE. We took the fire pit and fished/messed around until dusk before coming home. Fishing was exactly that in the afternoon, I fished but caught nothing. Anyhoo, fun times for all in beautiful NW Ontario.
  15. Thanks, and yes, it was pretty cold that day, but it’s toasty in the pop up shelter.
  16. Hi all, Managing to grab short sessions early and late recently. I got out just before sunrise last week, stunning scenery and a few fish, great start to the day.
  17. Absolutely exhausting, but worth it. Thats the trick, occupying short attention spans, hence the hot chocolate, the unconventional weiner roast, fish finders, headlamps and banter, skidoo ride.
  18. Hi all, I love sharing my passion and seeing the joy it brings.
  19. Got out for an hour and a half before sundown. Slow start but it picked up as the sun hit the tree line. All cookie cutter 19"ers with a couple bigger ones. https://youtu.be/zX8WQZ0M3Ug
  20. Hi all, Got out to my favourite convenient walleye spot, always a nice ride from the house, they even groomed the trail on the lake this year! Its been really mild here, averaging around -6℃ for the last couple of weeks. Only been getting out the last few days as I got my rear end kicked by a killer bout off flu or what ever, more like the plague if you ask me. Anyways, loving the mild temps at the moment, and the fish are plentiful too, pike, walleye and whitefish. Might try for trout somewhere next week, but I've got 12 days straight at work coming up, so unlikely....lol.
