Thanks, and like akaShag said the bones are quite fine and pretty much dissolve away, you don't notice them at all....might have to try the onion thing next time too
-
Thanks for the tips, I will try them next time for sure,..I appreciate your experience. When I started the process everything was cold and warmed up together so there was no quick drastic temp changes
-
Thanks, I really like mixing things up, and tweaking techniques,... keeps it interesting

I know I have talked about it before and there seemed to be some interest, so I filmed the process... the end product is awesome!

After wrapping up my Whitefish limit and getting them in the freezer to take home and can, I hiked in to a little Brook Trout to round out the trip

Nice bunch of fish!

Day 7 dawned bright and misty, a gorgeous morning and the fishing matched. I managed to fill out my limit of Whitefish to take home for the canner (canning video to come) and released many. I then had time for a few Pike and headed in to clean and freeze fish, before taking off on a Brook Trout hike in (part 2 video to come)

On day 6 I mixed it up abit after catching a few Whitefish the action slowed, so I went into the bays looking for some Pike. This lake holds a decent population Pike, they are not big but still fun to catch and usually quite aggressive. The weather turned wet in the evening but I did try for some Walleyes to no avail. It was a good day on the water

Thanks everyone for the kind words, I really do enjoy making the videos and its a great way to preserve and relive the memories, I will share the rest as they come out. @Bill M - I tried for them one spring on the fly but was a little too early for the hatch, I did see a few coming up but the bugs were barely started. I do want to try it again for sure. There a re a few caddis hatching in the fall when I am there but not enough to really get them going, just real sporadic occasional rises @Old Ironmaker I would spend about an hour or so in a location and then move on, I also will try those same areas again at different times of day if they are proven areas. Your graphs and/or Side imaging will often show if they are present too. I don't change up my presentation too much its usually a small ice jig and a waxworm, I sometimes mess with color but usually if they are present they will eat, the right depth is key though I like to get the bait a couple feet off bottom @GBW he is way cooler than me

Every fall a group of us heads north to fish a variety of waters for a variety of species, we put on alot of kms to fish some diverse types of water that ends with us targeting Whitefish for the canner. This year due to a couple new jobs and a wedding it became a mostly solo adventure other than a few days I spent with some other friends whose trip overlapped mine in one area (days 2-4). This year I decided to shoot a daily Vlog video series for my channel and it has been a lot of fun reliving the trip as I edit. Over the week I managed to catch 2 species of Trout, 2 species of Salmon, Walleyes, Pike and Whitefish. One of the highlights of the trip for me is catching Whitefish on my Centerpin setup which is loads of fun and then canning them. If you saw my post from last year you would know there was some debate as to the legality of canning the fish in camp and traveling home with them. I was always told that one the fish was prepared for consumption it was no longer part of your limit so canned fish could be transported, but as the question came up I made some inquiries with the Ministry and learned the wording of the law had been changed to "immediate consumption", so this year I froze the fish and then canned them at home, which actually worked out pretty good. There was a lot of interest in the canning process so I did shoot a video of me canning them which I will shared onced edited. Here are a few pics and screen grabs from the Vlog series and the Day 5 Vlog which is of the day I got to the Whitefish camp and started floatfishing for them. Days1-4 are also up on the channel if you are interested, it was a lot of fun and going solo was a fun challenge as well.

I put some liquid smoke in a couple of the jars this year, but have yet to try it.......I am gonna get one out now LOL One of the guys that goes with us does an amazing job smoking them too, may have to can some of them this year #3 I just sent an email to the MNR to get confirmation of my understanding of the rules for "processed" fish....... its a good point for sure

I would really like to try them in June again when the big flies are hatching, surface action just at dark is a lot of fun, they often cruise just under the surface and you can see their backs cutting through the surface at times
-
We learned the basics of the technique from some older guys that camped on one of the lakes we fish ( I have learned to listen closely to old guys,... a lot of wisdom comes with those grey hairs). We then refined it abit combining some newer tackle components, like slimmer more sensitive floats, jig styles, Fluorocarbon leaders, and a few other tweeks. But realistically the biggest challenge is finding areas the fish are using. The nice thing about Whities they often surface, jump and swirl on top when in shallow water feeding and give away their locations, spending time driving around with your graph will help you find them too, but again this time of year we always look for mucky areas outside of weedbeds in fairly large bays. Most lakes that have Whitefish tend to have lots of them, as they are rarely pressured too hard
-
I use it a lot for sandwiches, mix it up with avocado and onion, lots of black pepper, or you can use mayo. Also makes really good "crab" cakes I hope to do a video for those lakes this year too Definitely plan on doing a more indepth video for canning them this fall This was in September, June is good for fly fishing dries for them during the hatches

Nice bunch of fish

I saw alot of interest in Whitefish through the ice over the winter, so I thought I would share some pics/info on how we target them in the openwater. Each fall a group of us travel north to camp and fish a variety of lakes/rivers, for a variety of fish species (Brook Trout, Walleyes, Pike, Salmon), and one of my favorite parts of the trip are when we target Whities. These fish are plentiful , fight hard, and are excellent healthy (high Omega 3 content) table fare if eaten fresh or canned (I find freezing them turns them to mush). As the water cools in the fall these fish will move into the bays to take advantage of shallow water forage, which makes them a lot easier to target then when warmer temps keep them out schooling over vast deepwater flats. We look for them in 15-20 FOW in mucky/sand bottom bays out beyond the deepest weedline edge, where they will be feeding on nymphs, minnows, worms etc. Using our centerpin Steelhead outfits we present tiny ice jigs with waxworms with sensitive slip floats a few feet off bottom, the long rods are important to pick up enough line quickly on the hookset to stick these light biters. Here are a few pics from last fall and a very old video, I hope to redo the video this fall documenting the canning process better.......canned/jarred Whitefish is amazing Here is the very old video, and the picture quality is poor, but the info is still good. I do hope to redo/update it with some of my newer gear, and better explain the canning process. Because its an old video I apologize for the "plug" at the end, but that jig doesn't exist anymore anyway

Yes, I hunt, the ruffed Grouse and deer in that video are/were in my freezer Canned Whitefish is amazing, I will do a post on our Whitefish adventures soon. Thanks for the kind words for the video
