Let's haul our asses back to the 60's (which is not all that far back to me ). Two channels on TV, both CBC, one of them French. If you wanted to see a movie, you had to stay up for the Late Show. After the Late Show you got the old Indian-head test pattern. If you wanted to see a new-release movie in Sudbury, you went to the Capitol or Regent theatre. If you wanted a double-bill of second-run movies, you went to the Empire or Plaza theatre. If you wanted third-run or B movies (and some private necking), you went to the Notre Dame drive-in theatre, or the the 69 Drive-In (what a name!) on Hwy 69. (Later, I got my first VCR in about 1976 and paid $800 for it - figure that out in 2010 dollars! About that same time, the first video game was "Pong". Atari's "Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" was a big step up.) If you wanted to get together with friends, you actually planned ahead when you were at school. If it was spur-of-the-moment you phoned them at home. If they weren't home then you went out and tried to find them at the usual haunts. Man, the more I think about this, the more I think I sound like my grandfather if he were talking about the switch from silent movies to "talkies", or my Dad reminiscing about listening to "Amos and Andy" on the parlour radio!

Sounds like you got a good deal on the Mossberg, but I'd have to disagree with you on this. It's your call of course, but I'd be using that gun all the time because of where it came from. The best guns are guns that you use, and guns don't improve from storage. Just IMO.

What kind of prices are being asked for these five-pounders? I went to the local Superior Propane dealer and they were asking $79 each!

There's a good case here for extra deer tags for hunters in legal hunt areas near the golf course, but on the course itself, no.

The Most Incredible Portable Hut Design I've Ever Seen!
Jonny replied to solopaddler's topic in General Discussion
Not to take anything away from the guy, because he's building it just the way he wants it, and doing a great job, but (for myself) the hut would be too heavy and elaborate for a day-hut, and unnecessarily complicated for a season hut. Also, if I'm figuring out the pictures correctly, it is not built to be left in place for more than a day or two (depending on conditions) or it would freeze solid to the ice. There doesn't appear to be any clearance underneath the hut, and the floor may be built too lightly to be blocked up. This would be a great hut to display at a sportsmen's show. -
The Most Incredible Portable Hut Design I've Ever Seen!

Wow, that's a real labour of love. Kudo's to the guy. It sure is a one-of-a-kind showpiece. But it's way more complex than I would ever want to build and it's heavy for a portable day-hut. I'd like to see a Youtube video of the setup once it's out on the ice. I can conjecture a few problems for it on Northern Ontario lakes, depending on how it sets up. -
Thanks for the offer, GBW! EDIT - Oops! I thought you meant a 5 pounder. I've got a few 1 pounders. Just need one of them gizmos to fill em.

I went to Superior Propane in North Bay a few days ago (before this thread) and asked if they sell 5 lb tanks. They said no, not much demand, but they could order one. I said, how much? They said, $79 !!!

Should Canada have two teams in it? Canada 1 with all the best players, Canada 2 with the ones that didn't quite make the cut?
-
Thanks, Irish! The reason I asked was an earlier post where a kitchen scale was mentioned. I figured it might not be necessary as long as a 1 lb tank can withstand the same pressures as a 20 lb tank. Of course the kitchen scale could give you a good idea of just what percentage of fill you can get.

Lots of good answers - peace, tranquility, communing with nature, anticipation, camaraderie, etc. What compels me to fish? The unknown. Like Forrest Gump said, "It's like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."

Before I gave up ice fishing for a time (bad back) I had an 8" TML power auger that I bought new. It was the sweetest little thing and drilled hundreds of holes, but I can't remember what HP the motor was - I'm assuming it wasn't much more than 1 HP because it was so small! It was 34cc, I think, whatever that puts out. I could make Swiss cheese out of the ice on lakes around Timmins in March - that's thick ice, believe me! Maybe the gearing would make a difference too?
-
This sounds great! Tell me, how do you avoid over-filling? Or is it simply a matter of pressure equalization?

Green ain't so bad.

The great thing about the internet is that you can research stuff with very little effort: http://www.steves-digicams.com/camera-reviews/ I particularly like to check customer reviews: http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Stylus-Tough...howViewpoints=0

Cool camera. I don't have one, but judging by the Olympus SP-550 I've had for a couple of years now, they make a good quality camera. I might just have a look at one like yours for extreme weather.

Bottom line: FAc's, PAL's, etc. --- good ideas. Gun registry - a colossal waste of money.

We have gotten used to, over the years, pointing fingers south of the border for this kind of crime. This is horrendous and shocking, and there are no mitigating circumstances lent to the crime by the supposition that the anglers were doing something illegal. I think some heavy jail time is in order.

You don't, actually. There are only a few manufacturers of video equipment, and a lot of the "budget" brands are simply re-branded by them. I think DVD's will be around for a long time to come. If you look around you can find considerable consumer resistance to newer formats. Personally I'm still not sold on Blu-Ray. The machines are getting less expensive but changing format doesn't seem worth it to me yet. Those old VHS movies... you can replace a lot of them if you have a DVD burner on your computer and a good internet connection.

Ditto for NFL football. The colour and clarity is astounding, the camera work amazing.

Useful advice, except for this part, IMO. Personally I think this is way off. In our TV room we watch a 40" LCD from about 11 feet away. The rule-of-thumb suggested above works out to a minimum viewing distance of about 16 feet for our TV, but 11 feet is plenty far enough. Even a 42" or 50" HDTV would work out fine at 11 feet. When we buy another TV, 50" will be our choice.

I've been running a Samsung 40" 1080p LCD for three years now - great picture and no problems. At the time I bought it I compared the picture quality to plasma and found the LCD to be better (personal "by eye" opinion).

Awesome! What did you use for the numbers and the small lettering (obviously not painted)? Letraset?

I'd recommend you get yourself a sleigh, one of those hard-shell slippery plastic ones, about 4 ft. long, for under $20, like kids would use for sliding down a hill. It's a lot easier to drag gear than to carry it on your back and in your hands, especially if there's a little snow cover on the ice and you're sinking in with every step. And don't plan on walking more than a mile out (at the most)... it's too damn hard (especially on the way back in the evening!)
