  1. I was the same way when i picked up my ride last spring. After i got it slimed, havent given it anymore thought.

     

    Changed the lower unit oil in the spring, looks good. Changed the motor oil and filter last weekend, looks good.

    got fresh slime on her this year, so life is good!!!:clapping:

     

     

    FYI

    You should be changing your lower unit oil in the fall.

    If the seal is bad and water has entered the gear case it can crack the gear case when it freezes during the winter. If you are going to use your boat during the winter at least pull the lower drain plug long enough (only need a tiny amount to tell) to make sure the oil isn't cloudy (just top off the oil if you accidentally drain too much).

    however, they push down on the water to hold the front of the boat steady

    so lots of drag = slower top end and more fuel

    I would try to fix the problem before masking it

     

    I wonder where all the reports of 1.5 to 2.5 mph more top end are coming from then. :whistling:

    If they are set up correctly you will get better hole shot, be able to stay on plane at slower speeds, get better fuel mileage and better top end.

    FYI the Pro Troller model don't seem to work as well as advertised. While the trim tab portion works as advertised the ability to use them to slow down trolling speed deos not so just go with the regular smart tabs and not the pro troller model if you decide to buy them.

  3. Yeah, it sounds like you had not gotten to the point of being on plane.

    I gather you were running into the waves by the sounds of things.

    When I used to run my boat on Erie into nasty close together waves I would drive it bow up on purpose.

    If not you just took too big of a pounding. Anything over 2 1/2 or 3' I would run this way.

    2 footers I would just skip across.

     

    Running into waves the face of the wave is much steeper than the back of the wave and this causes the bow to bounce up. Porpoising occurs when you are riding in a swell (on some boats as small as 6") and the bow bounces up and down like a bucking bronco. Very unsettling (trim tabs get rid of this).

    I emailed the dealer to see what they have to say.

     

    I have said before to put on a pair of Smart Tabs.

    Best bang for the buck as they only $134 at Cabelas and there is a $10 mail in rebate until July 4th.

    I would also check motor height as well as angle when tucked in.

    I have been in boats that just don't handle well at all without tabs though.

  5. What are you guys talking about with regards to Rogers not having service? I have a iPhone 4 and drive from Hamilton to Sault Ste. Marie twice a year, and the only time I don't have a signal is at the very bottom of a couple very deep valleys. I'd be interested to see what kind of phones people are using who are complaining about no service outside cities...

     

     

    Rogers does not work at all in the NWT.

    When I moved up here I had Rogers (for 14 years) and had to give it up because it just didn't work period up here (no towers). When I called to cancel my contract and told them where I moved to they said no problem and didn't even charge for cancelling. I found Rogers very good otherwise I would not have been with them as long as I was.

     

    Bell Mobility is dealing with a class action law suit up in the North here for charging us their 911 acess fee when there is no 911 service in the NWT or Nunavut. When it is over and done with I expect that Bell will lose and they are going to have to reimburse anyone who has/has had a cell phone north of the 60th parallel. <_<

  6. Don't bother with marine grade wire; it's not an issue on fresh water boats.

    Princess Auto has 6awg booster cables on sale right now.

     

     

    Even in a freshwater enviroment marine grade wire is much better than un-coated wire.

    The un-coated copper wire will oxidize much faster than a tinned/ marine grade wire will.

    After a couple of years the un-coated wire will start to turn black on the ends. With time it travels down the length of wire causing poor conductivity.

     

    You doubt me, just have a look at the wiring of your trailer connector next time you replace it.

    Strip back the outer coating and you will see that you have a black mess in there instead of that nice shiny copper of new wire.

     

    If your boat is stored indoors this corrosion will be somewhat limited due to the drier enviroment.

     

    OH, almost forgot.

    West Marine carries tinned marine wire in 6ga. :good:

  7. You will want heavier tippet than 20# I use 40# minimum and go as heavy as 60#.

    I use a 7 1/2' 0x (13#) tapered mono leader with 2' of flouro tippet.

    Or if I tie my own leaders it's 3.5' of 40# followed by 2.5' of 30# then 1.5' of 20# and finally 2' of flouro.

     

    I really like bunny flies for pike.

  8. Once you start getting into mods to tow, they get expensive quick. Get the proper tow vehicle for whatever it is you are towing. Unfortunately, there is no 'Holy Grail' ie. plenty of towing capacity, room, power and 25mmpg while towing.

     

     

    True but if you already have the vehicle and $500 worth of brake upgrades will help it sure makes more sense than buying a more costly less fuel efficient vehicle. IMO

  9. The whole saying for salespeople goes like this 'They're liars till they're buyers and it's all Bull until the cheque clears'. Put yourself in their shoes, someone comes and says they are going to buy something everyday, but 99.9% of them don't come back to buy the item. Soooooo, if you really want something and are serious about it, put down a deposit. They are trying to do something for you to get your business. See if you can squeeze them a bit more, a few bucks saved is better in your pocket than the dealer's. That doesn't mean making outrageous demands but that has it's place in negotiating too.

    When I found my current vehicle at a dealer in Alberta I told them where I was coming from and that I wanted the truck. I gave them a deposit for them to hold it until I could get down there (a 17 hour drive south) to pick it up. The whole deal was smooth as silk. :thumbsup_anim:

     

    Now if I got down there and the truck was gone after leaving a deposit and driving that distance the dealership would have been fire bombed right then and there. :whistling:

  10. I have a 2009 dodge journey, same breaking system as caravan. Feels like boat is going to come through back window as break system is poorly designed for towing. Wouldn't suggest if your caravan is a 2009

     

     

    Brakes can be upgraded if need too. ;)

    Start with some EBC drilled and slotted rotors and high end pads and if needed the calipers can always be upgraded as well.
