  1. I don't have any experience with that unit but I will say it surely is great insurance and piece of mind after making a major investment like a new engine. It's not everyday that customers are walking into dealers buying new power plants. I would venture a guess that the dealer cost for that unit is a much less than retail. I would ask for dealers cost for that unit after dropping more than a few new 20's on the counter for the new engine. My dear father taught me years ago all you can do is ask, that's free, and there is no such thing as embarrassment while brokering a deal. My former business partner used to freak when I would after sell a small item at cost after a major purchase until he realized the gesture almost guaranteed that customer always came back and brought new customers with them. it's some of the best marketing dollars ever spent.

Here I go again, I digress once more, apologies all around.

the marina I'm dealing with in BC is giving me a very good deal and are thowing in oil, lower unit oil and Mercury service manual as well. ;)

  2. John brought his powerhead over tonight.

Problem is a broken clutch spring. :)

He will go and see the local small engine guy in the morning and hopefully get replacements.

Pretty good chance I think seeing how they had a carb kit in stock for my 3hp Tecumseh. ;)

The gear that comes out of the cltch was worn so it has been reversed as well.

Took the emery cloth to the clutch housing and a scotchbrite pad to the clutch pads too.

Should be good for another 7 years once it's put back together. B)

  3. Working on a deal for a new engine for my boat and am going to install the new Mercury MercMonitor gauge.

Anyone out there in OFC land running one on their boat?

There are 3 levels of ability and from what I can tell the middle level with all of the associated sensors and cables should do everything I need.

These things aren't cheap (about $800) but the information they provide and the ability to customize the display seems worth the extra $$$$ over the SC1000 version.

  4. There's a reason I have 3 power augers!!!! :D

You never know when one is going to have a problem. B)

Had my 3 hp Strikemaster break a lower gear case on a trip out to a local lake last month and had to run home to get the backup Eskimo powerhead.

I have since added a 3rd auger a Tanaka. :good:

'Cause you can never have too many fishing rods, boats, guns or power augers!!!

  5.

Dave, your dealer probably has a higher overhead and less sales and wants to keep his head above water, that, I understand, but a sale is better than a no sale and client loyalty.

    Exactly!!!

Is it better to make a couple of bucks or nothing? <_<

We had an outdoor store here in YK called Wolverine Tackle.

They priced most of their stuff 50%-100% higher than the South.

They wanted nearly $1K for an ice auger and not one of those Huskies or other high end ones.

    I bought a 3hp 10" Strikemaster new off ebay for $360 delivered.

They blamed the govt for stopping the caribou hunt when they closed their doors.

I say non-competitive prices drove them out of business.

I don't have a problem with a 10% premium living where I do but 30% or more and there is no way you're getting my $$$$.

Think about that when you go out of business. :wallbash:

  6. So I'm looking to re-power my boat.

It's time to replace the old '91 Merc 90hp 2 stroke with a new fuel injected 90hp 4 stroke.

    Gas isn't getting any cheaper.

I went into my local Merc dealer and told them I was looking for the engine, new controls and the new MercMonitor gauge system with all of the appropriate senors and cables.

I told them that I would like to deal with them but not if they were way more expensive than down South. I said I know it cost more to bring stuff up here and other costs are more expensive. I also reminded them that I bought a $15K Yamaha snowmobile from them.

Their rock bottom price on just the motor was nearly $11K + tax!!!! :o

That is $2K more than pricing I found down South. :(

I ended up calling a large marina in BC and talked with their people and got a quote.

Price is $11K for everything including tax and shipping!!!! :D

It's unfortunate that my local guy can't compete as I really wanted to give them my $$$$$$, but I'm not gonna pay an extra 30% for the privilege of giving them my money.

Just have to get my $$$ in order and I'll order up my new power plant. :good::good:

    Rant over!!!!!! <_<

  7. Some heavy plate... a couple bends.. a piece of angle welded across the top.. 2 feet of pressure treated wood wrapped in carpet.. 2 lag bolts and 2 U bolts to fit the frame. Don't even want to know what that cost me when ordering the boat.

If I can hit that with a 22 foot Baron and not move it, you don't need anymore than that.

Mine are similar but are welded to the trailer.

The trailer was custom made for my boat so they didn't need to be adjustable.
