  1. I've heard of that myself...but it is actually illegal I believe...
  2. another thing to keep in mind is that you can most likely get by ordering online waders by using the sizing chart...but for boots I'd strongly recommend bringing your waders into a store, wearing two pairs of socks (if you plan to do winter wading) and make sure you get properly fitting boots. for example, my feet are size 11...my simms boots are sz 12 for summer boots and my winter boots are 13
  3. it's an endangered species if nobody sees the diff between an endangered species as opposed to a yote pickin off sheep then so be it, not going to convince anybody otherwise...the article states it was attracted to the dead fish...net repair is common and a daily thing for off shore fish farming, not a big deal IMO...so they could jump in and distract it while they shot it and then attach a rope to its tail but no mention of any efforts to remove it unharmed??? it was there an easy meal, dead tuna, perhaps the article lacks some crucial info but there is no mention of it targeting live tuna stock perhaps a live release simply was not possible, I'm not a fish farmer, but either way, to me it seems there's a bit of bragging rights involved to this, sure he might have balls of steel but is far from a hero in my books...but the point is that this whole incident draws negative publicity to the sport of fishing...farmed, sport or otherwise this is bad rep for the fishing industry....there's already enough tree huggers and P3TA people out there... I'm not at all crying about the loss of the shark.....offshore fishing practices are under increasing scrutiny every year, does nobody here follow foreign affairs? it's not about buddy killing one shark, it's about the bigger picture and stuff like this is only adding fuel the fire....
  4. your budget might be a bit restricting but still options for you...start with looking in classifieds, good deals come up often enough...and if not just walk in to your local store, try some on and go from tehre....hodgmans are entry level priced and i've heard good stuff about them...also a good time buy from south of the border right now too
  5. senseless slaughter under the disguise of protecting their fish stock...we're not talking yote's taking down sheep here...it's 6 m great white, truly impressive size and an endangered species.....so instead of losing some tuna and creating some repair work to the net, let's kill the shark....great idea, just more fuel for P3TA and other such groups....and in this case, I'd have to agree with them....
  6. i think a lot of times a CO will observe you for a while before he approaches you...i've experienced that a few times...if you catch a steelie or resident trout and then stay there and keep fishing you're gonna have a hard time arguing you're targeting suckers i would say go out and fish for your suckers, make sure you don't have steelie specific gear on your line or in your vest...and should be fine...most CO's i've met are reasonable people...
  7. most big brands out there have great models to choose from...and it's mostly personal preference what makes them great...lens colour and material are the 2 big factors in my opinion that you need to consider glass lenses will give you the best optical advantage and scratch resistance, plastic is the lightest and polycarbonates are the toughest and most impact resistance in low light conditions yellow and amber, etc will offer the most visibility...brown and amber will offer the most contrast and most common i'd say...and dark grey and photochromic are the best for bright conditions, ie big water where you're not sight fishing at all kinda like irons really, need a full set to play a full round...i haven't tried interchangeable lenses yet but next pair probably will my favourite pairs are amber lenses and kinda of a pinkish/amber-ish mix....i use these for river fishing where i'm sight fishing a lot...
  8. "I would prefer to fish out of the city" I can get why you would think that but some of my fav/best spots on the thames are within city limits...fanshawe dam, the forks/labatt dam right downtown and springbank dam....
  9. huh, it wasn't herpes...the MNR was secretly testing an anti asian carp defense strategy....haha but yeah, carp fishing is still good...where exactly are you looking to fish? when I lived in Peterborough I met the same group of UK anglers every summer who said it was cheaper and better fishing to take 4 weeks vacation in summer, fly to ontario and rent a house and fish everyday to their heart's delight as opposed to fishing in the UK and joining a club
  10. Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) The British Columbia Provincial Government has chosen to implement a Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) to replace the Goods and Services tax (GST). This will take effect July 1, 2010 for all bookings starting on or after that date. This 12 % tax will be eligible for the 50% foreign visitor rebate as the GST was in the past. ********* Lodge will continue its practice of rebating the tax on our end so your actual tax rate will be 6% for all packages from July 1 up from the previous tax rate of 2.5%. ******** Lodge has been in contact with the Government for a ruling on the implementation of the tax. Our understanding is that anyone choosing to pay in full prior to May 1, 2010 for a package starting on or after July 1 will be taxed at the old rate of 2.5%. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity but we will need to know by no later than March 22 to allow for invoicing and payment prior to May 1. this is pretty much the industry standard.....as said before, it's barely any extra work to offer an instant rebate to the guest...and YES, it certainly is our way of providing a perceived value and service to our guests, why wouldn't we, we're in business to make money, anything it takes to get the guest here... certainly far from a "gimmick"....but if you enjoy processing paperwork and waitings weeks/months to get your rebate the hard way...then go for it...
  11. most lodges will offer instant rebate, every lodge that I am aware in fact.... if your destination resort charges you the full amount then you'd need to fill out paper work for a rebate....I don't see why any outfitter would charge full amount, it's barely any extra work on our end and it is viewed as a convenience to the client....
  12. they're both solid reels....pflueger has a rep for making a good fly reel at an affordable price....I've fished with both of those reels, very comparable.....president is a large arbour, trion is a mid arbour....trion is a tad heaver (0.3 of an ounce)...president is lighter and a bit flashier in design maybe.... what rod are you putting this on? what are you fishing for?...I'd suggest save a few bucks and grab the trion, unless you're targeting salmon/steelhead or big pike, in which case large arbour would come in handy
  13. agreed to some degree...but you're still gonna land it a lot quicker with more appropriate leader and lose less fish....
  14. I dunno about that....we talking world record potential fish or what? why not have a chance at it?.....who would actually let a fish spool them on purpose anyways? if the fish is running lay the heat on it before it spools you, most failures occur near the knot/lure.... ON steelheaders love to use incredibly light leaders, 3lb fluoro...what's the diff there? do that out west coast and you're gonna get carped out right quick for playing it too long and holding up the water....
  15. I would fight it and horse it in, put max pressure on with the setup i'm using...either get lucky and land it or break it off laying the heat on it...
  16. I'm struggling with this as well.....looking for 500 fb spool....any input would be greatly appreciated...shimano email customer service leaves much to be desired....been brand loyal for a long time but it's shaping up to be the summer of change.... does anybody also know where to order japan shimano products in north america?
  17. rapala/loop knot, whatever you prefer to call it, is certainly not as strong as other knots but it is strong enough.....I prefer the perfection loop knot, easy to learn but can be tricky to tie with large lures...worth learning if you haven't used it
  18. nice looking lure by the way...what is it?
  19. somewhat common over here....blue perch, walleye and pike...read an article on what causes the colouration but just can't recall off the top of my head right now...
  20. although I'd have to agree with the vast majority of opinion here that this course wouldn't offer much value to myself(being an expert of course and know everything..ha) but I think it's fair priced and would offer valuable info for a beginner. would be very cool to see this type of program offered in public school level....and props to them for posting on this thread too...
  21. braid is diff than mono, last a lot longer....mono def replace start of every season, if you fish a lot then replace when needed throughout the season I generally replace mine when the spool gets low enough to affect casting distance...also a matter of personal opinion, myself I like to keep spooled up right to the lip
  22. oh man, you're gonna kick yourself when you read this, that's a rookie mistake....straight from the shimano instruction booklet that would've came with your reel, also available online from their website: Be careful to put the QuickFire II clutch bar in the "up" position when reassembling the reel. Otherwise, it may not mesh properly with the release mechanism hope you see this in time to salvage your trip....
  23. when I first read of this online and saw his picture I thought he looked very familiar....then I read this later on: "He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he always had his boys with him doing outdoor things with them. They were involved in hockey and soccer and whenever you saw them, they were always together," she said. I believe I may have chatted with him for a few mins on the maitland last season, he was a stand up guy, shared some info on the bite.... very sad loss, my condolences to his family and friends has anybody read anything further as to what caused the old man to start shooting?
