  1. Sorry don't really got any fishing ones though for some reason lol! I will soon with the OFC tourny and a reason to take pics.

Here's kempenfelt bay inbetween those months, March 24, 2010 with a broken up shoreline from Government dock in Barrie (Not big bay point).

I'm quickly realizing I couldn't wait to see open water.

  2. I think we sometimes forget that marriage is a partnership. It's not just about what suits us personally.

The first time we were invited to go on a holiday in Mexico it was about the last thing I wanted to do, but I knew my wife really wanted it, so I sucked it up and agreed.

The first few days were every bit as boring as I figured, although I discovered there a lot of topless sunbathers just down the beach. That brightened the day somewhat. Then I realized the food was excellent - another bonus. But I was still bored sitting by the pool every day. I started to wander around the pools and the beach meeting new friends, some of whom remain good friends 15 years later, folks from all over Canada and the US. This was getting better all the time.

So I started looking at my other options. There were tours to be had very reasonably priced. I've always thought guided tours were kinda tacky but it turned out that there were lots of fascinating things to be seen not far from Cancun. There is a huge amount of Maya culture to be seen, from pyramids to entire cities that have been lost in the jungle for years but have only recently been unearthed. Coba is one of the newest locations to be made accessible and it's incredible. Unfortunately the pyramid at Chichen Itza can no longer be climbed but the one at Coba is open. It's about 300' high and a very steep climb. Not for the faint of heart.

Then one day I participated in a swimming pool dive experience, free, just to put on the gear and paddle around the bottom of a 5' pool. Too cool. And that led to a 3 hour resort course and an easy dive in 30' of water on a gorgeous bit of reef absolutely covered in exotic fishies and a whole bunch of Southern Sting Rays. We even saw a Nurse shark in the distance. This turned into a 10 year obsession for me including diving the Yucatan cenotes at least a few days on every holiday. Cenotes are caves btw. And they're beautiful. Intimidating at first but once you learn to do it right (i.e. with extreme care) it's amazing. This one little adventure led to me meeting folks and diving with them all over the Great Lakes, but even better, the Florida Keys and up the east Florida coast. To learn to dive safely and well I made a number of trips to quarried in Pennsylvania (Dutch Springs) and Ohio (Gilboa). The Gilboa trips became more of a gathering of friends than dive training.

So don't be afraid to share your holiday time with your spouse. It turned out that I had more fun in Cancun than my wife ever did just because I put a little effort into it. And she still thinks I do it for her.

Some very good points there John, thanks.

We have an 18 month old, I'm just plain scared to travel far distances right now. My wife and I have had mini vacations by dropping off the kid at one of our parents and hit a hotel for a couple nights. Those are fun getaways for us. We hit the movies, pool, have a nice dinner and go for a walk. It's worth a few hundred bucks to get that much needed break in together.

  3. Yup kids do stupid stuff and they learn from it, it's the only way. We've all had our experiences, too bad in their case it could actually result in death.

I remember climbing to the top of a crab apple tree around that age and started swinging back and forth on the top branch. It was all fun until the branch broke and I fell through all the little twigs landing on the bottom branch right between the legs. It was the worst nutshot you could imagine. At least I've had 1 kid so far so I know that department still works but I learned a lesson or two that day.

  4. I think we're also missing part of Chessy's question... you are in a mandatory turn lane.. that is dedicated to making a left turn.. do you need to signal as well?

Apparently not according to the law. However when you are driving towards an intersection it's often difficult to tell if the car opposite of u is in a dedicated left hand turn lane or if it goes straight through. A simple signal tells u if you get a yellow light you're best to stop if you can so the person can make their left. Just my opinion.

  5. Please always signal, I'm so sick of the odd person not signaling when they cut me off. Sure they can get away with it when there isn't other cars around, but it's the 1 time they forget to when changing lanes that causes the accident. If you do it every time than it just becomes a habit... It should be routine for everyone...

  6. Friends of ours go on vacations ALL the time.

For years they kept bugging the wife and i to go with them.

I felt the same way most of the people here replied.

The grass is green, the sky is blue,we have that here too.

    So the answer was NO!

Well that was until Pete told me that the beach, that the resort was on was TOPLESS! :o

    When do we leave?????????

Spent a week in the Dominican,on the beach, horse back riding, on the beach, kayaking, on the beach.

Did i mention the beach was TOPLESS? :whistling:

I would love to post the pictures here but i think Roy would kick my butt so hard that i would have to take off my shirt to poop.

    :thumbsup_anim::thumbsup_anim::thumbsup_anim:

    Winner. End thread.

  7. When we go on vacation it always feels like there's a plan, there's something we have to do, etc. It's just not as relaxing as I always hope and before you know the trip is over, wallet is empty and your boarding the plane on a dreadful Sunday knowing you're back to work the next day.

I just like being secluded more, up north, fishing & going at my own pace. Every trip seems different, often an adventure with real stories that isn't about how you lost your luggage but how the "Big one got away". Sure sippin' cocktails on the beach is good times, but definitely not something I enjoy doing every year. My wife on the other hand would have a different story....

  8. Hey Jimmer,

I'm wondering if Botulism Type E may be a potential culprit. I'm hoping not though...

I found this on the net when I googled Goby die offs:

"Field investigations have suggested that the die-offs observed in Lake Huron may be the result of botulism type E poisoning. Toxins from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and specifically Type E botulism, which is found in fish-eating birds in the Great Lakes, cause these die-offs. The botulism toxin is produced in the absence of oxygen and with suitable temperature and nutrient conditions. It remains unclear which factors trigger the bacterium to produce the neurotoxin and the ensuing fish and wildlife die-offs.

Species commonly found during die-off events include: Freshwater Drum (Sheepshead), Smallmouth Bass, Rock Bass, Round Gobies, and Channel Catfish. Bird species include Loons, Cormorants, Mergansers, Gulls and other waterbirds. It is suspected that zebra and quagga mussels are ingesting the botulinum bacteria (invertebrates are not affected by botulism).

Round gobies are known to heavily feed on mussels; therefore, they are thought to be ingesting the bacteria. Native fish species such as those commonly associated with the die-off are starting to feed primarily on the round goby; thus, they become affected by botulism. This movement of botulism is believed to be leading to the fish die-offs commonly observed along Lake Huron."

Wow I hope that's not the case! I must've slaughtered a dozen gobys from simcoe last summer. Although I've then seen birds come and take the carcass which after reading that doesn't do any good. I guess there's no easy way to rid them.

  9. Awesome video thanks for sharing.

My buddy and I went out yesterday afternoon on kempenfelt bay. Setting up the tent in 50km/hr gusts was nearly impossible but we got it. We don't have a flasher and it was our first time ever targeting whitefish. All I got was 2 herring which of course went back down the hole. It was still exciting though to land anything even accident fish. I was mostly using a blue fox jig'n spoon tipped with a pink grub near the bottom.

Hopefully I can meet up with some of you at the Fishing for Tyler event and get some tips.

  10. CTC Always has a better selection and usually where I go. I only check walmart if I've been dragged there by my wife. No disrespect to anyone here but I can't stand half of walmart's customers.

Then again when I checkout and spend $40 for a handful of lures I start realize I'm a sucker.

  11. For microbreweries I'm a fan of Creemore. It's just good stuff but will really only have it when I'm in the mood.

In general though if I'm having beer with dinner like at a restaurant 9/10 I'm having a red beer, Rickards Red is much better than Keiths Red but I'll take either. If I'm going watching the game, just having drinks, etc. I usually prefer an ice cold MGD.
