  1. Yeah, as I keep saying, a lot of it entails a judgement call. My intent is in many ways personal. I have no problem with people buying from whomever they wish, but I like to support Canadian businesses, even better if they're local, and I prefer to not support countries with dismal human rights records. You're totally correct when you say "Anyone that wouldn't buy from other than from a wholly owned Canadian company will be shopping for quite a while unfortunately." That's the nature of today's world, and I have no problem with people from different countries working together, it creates understanding and brings us all closer. And I can't find any reference to Johnny D's, am I missing something?
  2. I have absolutely no belief in the supernatural whatsoever, so I'll never be superstitious, touch wood. Oops...
  3. But as far as I know they are manufactured here. As I said in an earlier post, in many cases it's a judgement call, I'm not going to track down every component, try to figure out where the metal was mined, whether the plastics came from Canadian or Venezuelan oil, etc. If there is a significant Canadian component, as in 'employs a lot of Canucks', then I'll probably include it.
  4. I think it's high time that someone made a lure that looks like a banana...
  5. Once, she also refused to eat some nice fresh tomatoes that my father had brought over from his own garden, because according to her they had been grown in dirt. Yeah, and the ones you buy at the store were just magicked up out of thin air by the food fairy. After that I was hoping that she would just starve to death, but no such luck.
  6. Thanks to your wonderful postings, I must say that I'm privileged to feel as if I'm growing up along with Jack, he's got a great life ahead of him! True story: About 35 years ago I was taking one of my nature rambles, as much as to avoid an afternoon with my ex-wife's family as any other reason. I found a dead ring-billed gull, and as it was banded I picked it up and took down the number. Finally got back to the out-law's place and said I needed to make a phone call to the Canadian Wildlife Service. My ex's niece, too prim and proper for her own good, asked me why, so I told her. "EEEW!" she shrieked, "You picked up a dead animal with your HANDS?!" She was eating a burger at the time, so I seized the opportunity; "Well," I replied "Right now you're putting a dead animal in your mouth." The screams from everyone were quite entertaining, and my ex didn't speak to me for a while.
  7. Now you're giving them credit! Haven't dissected a bass head, but if its brain is the size of a pea I would be surprised.
  8. I just make a quick and dirty set-up. Palomar a hook about 2 feet up the line, pinch a good size split shot or rubber core on the bottom, head for a rock fall that continues underwater, and enjoy pulling in smallmouth. Works for me. Anything complex is too much like work.
  9. For jumping in and out of the canoe, or wading in the water for fishing, or to put the outboard on the back of the inflatable, I just buy those cheap $10 running shoes at WalMart, the ones with the velcro closures. They only last a season but at that price who cares? Can't find an on-line link, but they're on the shelf. Oops, didn't notice you wanted to keep your feet dry, just assumed that it's pretty well impossible when fishing.
  10. A guy I worked with used to get pickled pike from a buddy of his up in Espanola. Quite good.
  11. Ditto. Watching the swirl of water and hearing the smash is a thrill I can't get enough of.
  12. Despite being told it won't work, I used nail clippers, and they work fine. Press as you normally would, and then pull the line sideways between the cutters.
  13. Looks like more than a molt, more likely an infestation, ticks or something. Beauty shots!
  14. ?! Who are these heathens? Pike are awesome.
  15. I was thinking along similar lines, and the addition of the trailer may have also altered the airflow around the rear resulting in less cooling, but I can't say for sure. But the way the commentator was talking it sounded to me as if this wasn't exclusive to VWs, but perhaps intended as a conversion for other vehicles too.
  16. I suspect there were some problems, and that may be why it never took off. But this looks like a cool idea. http://www.wimp.com/beetleidea/
  17. Contrary to popular perception, I'm not on the interwebby 24/7. Have you been listening to my wife?
  18. The Wels catfish has been introduced into rivers in France, and they seem to have developed a taste for some of the local birds:
