  1. I like the pictures with the CN tower in the background. It's cool to think that even in one of Canada's largest cities, you still have a decent chance of putting a good bend in your rod. Those are some nice fish, Dude.
  2. I agree with the poster who said the salt in the bag is window dressing...it's there to catch fishermen, not fish. That said, I'd leave any scented/impregnated baits in the bag they came in, or something else you can keep air tight. I wouldn't consider the inside of most tackle trays to be air tight. I like to try to squeeze most of the air out of the bags my baits are in before I seal them up too. Good plastic bait is kind of expensive, I try to take good care of it. The space the bags take up are worth it in my opinion.
  3. You could quite easily fish your whole life, never pick up a baitcaster, and still enjoy the sport. I have a couple of descent Abu-Garcia's, but rarely use them for anything other than trolling. What situations, other than trolling, do you guys use your bait rods for?
  4. There's one at my camp that comes around looking for handouts all year 'round. I know I probably shouldn't but I throw him all kinds of scraps...he'll eat just about anything. The little dude (or lady) walks around my yard like he owns the place now. Also, the partridge population has exploded the last year. I've seen the fox walk within ten feet of a couple of birds and neither the fox nor birds seem to pay much attention to each other. Why chase your dinner when you can just take it from a friendly hand? That's the main problem...he's becoming reliant on the hand outs.
  5. At my camp (north of Sudbury) medium power bait tubes (must be smoke coloured) is THE go to bait for huge smallies all July and August. They gotta be smoke though...the smoke tubes get hammered non-stop while anything else produces many (I'm talkin' MANY) fewer strikes. I think the smoke colour most accuratly mimicks a crawfish which all bass up there that time of year seem to be full of.
  6. Although whether or not it is legal is a matter of concern, I'd be more curious to find out whether or not it actually helps catch more fish. I suspect it does not. We've all heard of people breaking the regs to gain various advantages. People choose to fish out of season, or use multiple lines, or traphooks or whatever because those acts generally put more fish in the boat...but have you ever heard of people using an underwater light as an attractor and increasing their catch as a result? I have not. If it worked, you could be sure a bunch of boneheads would be doing it.
  7. I'm thinking about ordering a suit of "Ice Armor" from Clam. Does anyone have a set? I'm curious about two things; first of all, I'm 5'10" 180 lbs and carry a pretty decent gut...I was thinking XL for the coat and maybe XXL for the pants. Is anyone familiar with how they size? Also, I notice that something called Ice Armor Extreme is available. Is anyone aware of what the differences are, and whether or not its worth the extra $100 or so? Thanks.
  8. How do you folks like to present your dead baits for pike when using tip-ups? Single, treble, jig, quick-strike?...what kind of hook/hook combo do you like? Also...how do you hang the smelt (shinner, whatever) in the water? Can I assume everyone prefers the minnow to remain horizontal? Thanks...
  9. I've never even caught at smallmouth through the ice by accident...or seen one caught. I've seen a couple of large mouths come up while fishing for crappie, but that's about it. I don't think they are "as active as pike" in the winter. Not by a long shot. At least not where I am. (Sudbury.)
  10. Has anyone seen the Humminbird fishfinder/gps combo at costco? Anyone know if it's any good? It looks a bit crappy.
  11. Anyone ever seen this before? http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=5170056017734394596 I thought it was awesome.
  12. A dozen barley sandwiches is all I need. Oh...a bag of sunflower seeds is good to have too.
  13. I thought "find the bottom of a little bowl or saddle, you might do OK there. If there's a good hump, boulder or sunken tree down there...get on top of it" was what he was after. You can make the $10 cheque out to "Bonghits".
  14. If you can find the bottom of a little bowl or saddle, you might do OK there. If there's a good hump, boulder or sunken tree down there...get on top of it. To be honest, I've seen where one or two holes produce all day while holes drilled 20 or 30 feet away get nothing. Be prepared to move around. Sometimes 10-20 yards is all it takes.
  15. I'm in the process of taking over my Father-in-law's camp. It's on a piece of CN leased land behind Capreol. There's no power there. I've got a propane stove/oven for cooking and a wood stove for heat. My question is this: Will my insurance company give me a hard time about the wood stove.?..I've heard they'll do that if it is your only source of heat. My Father-in-law had coverage through his guy but he took out the policy 25 years ago and canceled it as soon I took it over. His coverage is through his old union anyway, so I couldn't assume the policy. What do you guys think?
  16. I'm no expert, but... You have to move around to find them basically. Favorite spots sometimes just don't produce. Where I fish them (lower French river area) we usually find them in deeper water. 25 to 40 feet. I get most of mine within about 1.5 feet off bottom. Sometimes they do suspend...and those will be the active ones. You'll want a sonar to be sure. Or you can work your jig up a foot or two at a time looking for 'em. I've find them as high a 16 feet off. I've heard maggots are awesome, but can't confirm that. I've had the best luck using a little jig or spoon tipped with a 1.5-3 inch shiner. Not chubs, little silver shiners. Jigging is good, but sometimes my still line does better. Often I'll get a hit on my jigging line shortly after I put it down to take a drink or scoop my other hole or whatever. They have soft, paper-like lips, so a gentle sweep is the best hook set, and don't horse it. When the bite is on, they are a lot of fun. Good eating too, they clean up just like a bass. Not a lot of help I guess, but good luck and have fun.
  17. You may want to ensure that however those pine cones and debris accumulated can't do so again. Did critters drag it all in or did it somehow get blown in? As an electrician I wouldn't recommend having wires run through an area that will build up with tinder-like material. Know what I'm saying?
  18. A blond walks into Tim Horton's and orders a coffee. All of a sudden she starts to jump up and down and scream "I won a motor-home, I won a motor-home!" The girl behind the counter is confused, because she knows that a motor-home is NOT one of the prizes offered for this season's roll-up-the-rim contest. She asks to see the winning cup. "I'm sorry Ma'am'"she says after examining the rim. "This says win a bagel" Ha ha !!!!
  19. My Kawi 750 Brute Force comes with a pull start and NO decompression button. I can start it with a single one hander almost every time I've tried it. It's also fully automatic...I'll never go back to a shifter. Get a winch. For God's sake, get a winch. There will come a time you wish you had it.
  20. What do you guys think? A guy at work insistss that the average 20 inch smallmouth bass is usually 5 lbs or greater. I think a true fiver would go closer to 22 inches. I know girth is obviously a huge factor, so we're talking the average...not a football-like pig and not a skinny little rail. Average.
  21. My Father-in-law is retired, and he makes a good partner because of it. He has time during the week to do stuff like running around and getting supplies we need for the weekend. Then on Friday while I'm underground at the mine, he packs everything up and as soon as I get off work we're on the road. Works out great. Why is the thread stretched?
  22. If it only has 76 miles on it, and unless he sunk it or totaled it, I'd buy it. Can't go wrong with a Honda.
  23. I wouldn't buy a used quad unless I knew the guy who owned it and could be sure he wasn't a total haywire. If it's been abused you could be getting into a real jackpot. You can get a brand new Kawi 750 for just over $10G. Also there are guys bringing in new bikes from the states and selling them privately...I've seen a Honda 550 Foreman for $6500. Have fun getting work done under warranty with one though.
  24. Occasionally, throwing something at them that they've never seen before is the ticket. Best way to find out if they work is to try 'em.
  25. Chuck Norris doesn't go hunting, Chuck Norris goes killing. The term "hunting" implies there's a chance of failure.
