First of all...YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have you ever had the service? My buddy couldn't believe I paid for satelite radio. Then he bought a new car with a six month free subscription. He came to me at the end of the six months and told me he had just bought a two-year extension. Most people who try it really like it. If you live in a town like Sudbury, you appreciate having the option of more than 3 or 4 really crudy channels. My radio was stolen a few months back and I've been eagerly waiting to hear this news before I committed to new hardware. I've really missed it in the time I haven't had it. I'm buying a new radio and getting a subsciption in the next day or two.

I don't think this is the site I ordered from, but I can't find the other one. http://www.capitaldragons.com/shop/feeder-area-wax-worms-c-17_25

I've been through this. There are companies that sell worms on-line, mainly as pet food. You can order large quantities from them. Make sure its a Canadian company as there seems to be an issue with shipping live worms over the border. I can't remember the name of the company I ordered from but the worms showed up in good shape. They were a little expensive. Take the time to learn about providing the right conditions to store your worms (the fridge is too cold) or they'll die real quick.

I know all about Eric...I'm still listening to the show, I just download it now. I used to do that even when I had a radio and subscription so that I could put it on my MP3 player. If he re-signs I'll happily go back to paying for it. The IQ test results show was some of the best radio I ever heard. Gripping. I was aware of Stern from watching the old Letterman show, and I was living in Mississauga when he was on the Q. I tried listening to his show but couldn't get into it. When I bought the satalite radio, I figured I'd never listen to Stern...but I checked it out a couple of times and somehow got hooked. If he goes away now I don't know what I'll do. I can't get into Bubba...he's too much of a red-neck or something. As far as "the tapes" go...I really don't enjoy listening to ten year old shows. He's been hinting about starting his own subsciption-based show on the internet. I'd pay for that.

Are any of you guys in "143" with the Stern show? It's really getting close to the wire. What will happen?!? My radio was stolen a few months back, and it happened to almost coincide with the end of my year's subscription. When I called to cancel the service on my stolen unit, they asked me if I wanted a new subscription and a new radio. I told them that I'd only buy new hardware and subscribe to their service if they re-sign Stern. Their music is good and I might get back into it regardless. It's awesome for camp where the radio reception is poor...and the Sudbury stations suck. I listen 80% of the time to Stern...but really appreciate the 20% of the time I listen to their music. Is it worth it though without that big-mouthed goof? Do you think he'll re-sign and if he doesn't will you continue to pay? Go ahead...

How does the ACLU (or anyone for that matter) prevent you from using the term "Christmas"? You can call it what you want and so can anyone else. It seems to me that a person with the "spirit of Christmas" in them wouldn't waste time sending a card to someone who won't appreciate it...let alone do so to purposefully interfere with legitimate fund-raising. I'm sure you know plenty of individuals who would genuinely enjoy receiving a card or note from you this time of year. Why not think of them instead? Happy Holidays...Merry Christmas...whatever floats your boat.

When I lived down south I learned that Sudbury had a reputation as a "rough town"...full of bikers and thugs...people seem to think violent crime is an ever present and unavoidable fact of life up here. - Unless you go looking for trouble...picking fights in bars, dealing or buying dope, those kind of things...you'll be fine. I leave my car unlocked at night and I wouldn't worry about my wife being unescorted most places and times. - The one big difference is down south when someone says something like "Back off or I'll punch you in the face."...they are most likely just mouthing off. If you hear that up north and you don't take it seriously, there's a decent chance you're about to be punched in the face. That goes back to what I was saying about not going looking for trouble.

I'm sorry, but what a stupid thing to say. I know lots of people who moved away in the mid nineties when the economy here was bad and they are moving back in droves. That's part of the reason for the low vacancy rate that was spoken of. I left Sudbury in 1996 and spend about 5 years living in the 905 and 519 areas. For me, life up north beats life down south in every reason that matters. I'm home.

It`s been 9 months since my last smoke!
Fishnwire replied to lookinforwalleye's topic in General Discussion
I haven't smoked in almost four years. At this point, I can't believe I ever smoked...what was I thinking? -
Thanks for the info, folks. One question...what is "skip"?

I picked up a new (used) Jeep yesterday and the previous owner installed a CB radio. I haven't even turned it on yet, and I don't know the first thing about them. - What do I need to know? There must be laws regulating their use, right? Obviously the whole "hands-free device" thing would apply...but is there an emergency channel or restricted ones, or anything like that? - Any help would be appreciated.

Which are the best fishing line brands to use?
Fishnwire replied to fisher12's topic in General Discussion
In some ways it comes down to personal preference...you may have to try a few types and makes until you find something you like. For most of my light-medium spinning reels I use 8 lb Fireline with 2 foot 12 lb Seguar InvisX leaders. That's good for most of the bass and walleye fishing I do and I've taken pike around ten pounds on that set up. 8 lb Fireline will straighten snagged hooks and will cut an ungloved hand well before it snaps. The stuff is amazing, as far as I'm concerned. It's a little pricey and the standard 125 yard spools an inconvenient size. I bought a 1500 yard spool and I'm real happy I did. I even use it through the ice with a long 4lb flouro leader for crappie and perch. I like Powerpro on my baitreels, usually at least 20 lb. I usually use either a flouro or wire leader (depending on the species) on my bait casters too. Like I say, personal prefence plays a big role in what kind of line you'll get the most from. No line is perfect is all applications so you're really looking for the compromise that works best for you. -
This is one of the best times of year to fish that area. You'll have fun...I know I will.

I'll admit that when I was about 14-16 I used to do it (flossing, snagging, whatever you want to call it) every year. I was a stupid kid, what can I say? The thing is, I grew up and realized it was wrong. People either get it, or they don't. - At the time, I also didn't understand the concept of catch and release. I'm not saying people who don't C&R also illegally snag fish, but it wasn't until I viewed the fishery’s sustainability as something that my actions had an effect on did I see the error of my ways.

I'm not sure any such place exists.

Anyone know what I should expect to pay for a stainless point? I heard they're around $100, but I have a guy who wants to sell me a brand new one he claims has "no-screen and will last forever" which he says he paid almost $300 for, but will sell me for a lot (a lot!) less. I asked for more info on the point but he's hasn't got back to me yet and I was hoping some one could chime in with the kind of knowledge we all hope to tap into at OFC! (I want to know if he is Bull'ing.) Also, does anyone know how much 1 1/4 inch galvanized pipe is per foot? I heard about $5...does that sound right? - I know I could phone around and get some of these answers but most places are closed (its past 6:00) and I'd like to get back to this guy tonight. I really appreciate any help. Thanks folks.

I use 8 lb Fireline Crystal on every spinning rod I have. I'm after bass and walleye but if I hook into a medium sized pike I can usually land it. That stuff is awesome. I vary my leader (usually 12 lb Seaguar) but that 8 lb Fireline is good fo most of my fishing. Make sure you've got a leather glove if you need to break off a snag...that stuff will cut your hands before it'll break. Often hooks come up straightened out. It's good stuff, IMHO.

Rude fishermen infringe on cottage enjoyment
Fishnwire replied to FlyGuy5's topic in General Discussion
There's no excuse for hooking someone's upholstry or casting in the proximity of swimmers. That said, if you own a cottage on a lake with lots of traffic...expect lots of traffic. -
At my camp north of Sudbury, the SMB fishing is fairly spectacular this time of year. A three or four hour outing will generally see somewhere between 10-20 fish between 16 and 20 inches. The thing I have noticed is that the bass between 16-18 inches seem to fight a lot harder than the 19-20 inchers. The smaller fish are generally a lot more acrobatic and tend to strip more line and take more runs. Don't get me wrong, the big ones pull harder...but it's just more weight...they don't seem to be fighting like their life depends on it like their slightly smaller brothers and sisters do. My body of water is relatively small and fished almost exclusively by myself or my guests. Small mouth bass catch and release is mandatory in my boat, and has been for the last seven years or so. I'm begining to wonder if those big pigs have been hooked a few times already, and have learned to save their energy, because they been "conditioned" to the extent that they know they'll just be released anyway, and that taking it easy is in their best interst. It's funny, because the slightly smaller ones are more fun to catch...they're real scrappers, compared to the cows. And yet, I'd rather lip-lock a chunker, than one that stripped more line and took more air. Is it possible a hooked fish who has been through it over and over again just thinks "Oh this again? No point wasting a lot of energy."?

The "purpose" of freezing it is because I won't be there to keep it from freezing. I bring a fair amount of canned goods in during the summer months so that I have a bit of an inventory there. Come fall, there is usually a twenty to a dozen cans or more that I bring out. I'd like to leave a few behind, so that they are there for the half dozen or so trips I make during the winter. Bringing stuff in from where the plowed road ends in the winter on my sled (there is limited room) is a pain. The more I can leave in camp, the less I have to bring. Plus, If I ever get snowed in or something, it's good to have a little stockpile. I have some packaged dry goods (rice, pasta, dried potatoes) which can cary me through, but it would be nice to leave some peas, corn, beans, soup, raviolli, pineapple, mushrooms, etc... I understand vessles may rupture in extreme cold, but if the container is not visably compromised...can I assume the contents are OK? Also, what if the exterior of a can is rusted? How bad is that?

I've caught a hand full of walleye (including one about 4 pounds) on topwater baits, but I was always targeting smallies at the time. As others have said, you'll eventually get a couple on top-water baits, but your night-time hours are probably better spent using other techniques. My buddy on the French River goes out during the August full moon every year to a certain spot where all they do is troll Rapala type baits and all they catch is walleye in the ten pound range. In the days before rubber nets and LED headlights he used to bring three or four mesh-type nets every night because trying to extract three trebles from one of those old nets in the dark was near impossible. He'd cut the line, throw the tangled net in the front of the boat and worry about it in the daylight.
-
I'm fairly certain the answer is no...but could I leave canned food at camp over the winter? What about unopened stuff in plastic bottles like salad dressing, BBQ sauce and pop, and also, what about stuff in cardboard "tetra" pacs...like juice boxes or beef broth?

I would (and do) tell any young person that you can't go wrong learning a trade. My only regret about becoming an electrician is that I didn't do it a lot sooner. Most trades are in steady demand so you can work as much as you want. ---
