  1. The Sheffield or the Guide Select? If it's the Guide Select, say no more. That rod has no backbone, used it last spring, promptly replaced it with the Raven IM8.
  2. collected some skein last week, it's getting pretty ripe. Messy job curing it. thanks for the update BITE!
  3. I think the rain will do us good in the long run. Water tables are up from last summer but still low overall (can you believe it!). One particular angler's group is reporting above average salmon and trout reproduction on a lake ontario trib. Hopefully this pays dividends a few years down the road. But yes, the weather has foiled many of my fishing plans this summer. It's not so much the rain, just don't wanna get caught in a thunderstorm.
  4. you can check the flow rate(s) of your river(s) from this site. Real Time Hydrometric Data
  5. Hey Stoty, last summer was the first time I actually fished Algonquin though I've camped it's interior many times. I caught an honest 5 lb smallie on a perch pattern shad rap. Some of those fish have never seen a lure. Should be good.
  6. I guess you guys are right about finding enough wood, it shouldn't be a problem. But I have had the experience of camping on a small island site and having to paddle to shore to find wood. I guess that's easy enough to do but it sure cuts into your fishing time. Another politically incorrect way of assuring yourself of dry wood is to cut down dead trees, especially pine. We usually check the tops first for any signs of green, if there's none, we snap a few branches; if they snap crisply it's a taker. But enough on that topic, have a great trip!
  7. As far as picking a camp site goes, I would camp on an island only if it is fairly large. Smaller islands always prove to be too windy and the best firewood is often picked over by this time of year. It's been a wet summer so most of the downed timber will probably be too wet anyway. Just a couple of thoughts.
  8. I have never fished the area myself, but if I'm not mistaken I read somewhere once that the ontario record for musky came out of that region. I think it was somewhere at the mouth of the river, either Arnold's Bay or the Moon River Bay itself or Blackstone Harbour. But the mouth of the river is probably not what your asking about.
  9. Thought about doing this myself. How well can you actually see the water?
  10. I also highly recommend anything from Eureka. I have the El Capitan 4 (really sleeps 3). Very light, very packable and great construction. You could spend more if you want, but are you really getting that much better performance for twice the price. I got mine at Tent City in Concord, Ont. I think Flaherty's carries them too.
  11. I notice you're using a Fenwick rod. I'm eyeing one of these as my first float rod. Which model are you using and how do you like it. lb
  12. Hello, new to the board here and I've been looking at a few steelhead rods myself for use with either a cp reel or a spinning reel. The convergence is one of the rods on my short list. For those of you who use this rod, do you use it with a spinning reel or a cp reel. thanks
  13. Can one fish that lake in a canoe or do you need a motor boat?
