  1. I always wondered about appreciation of land value where you cant build. how bad is it? why would one buy such land? What can you do with it? Maybe use it to camp out or trailer camping? And if the stream or river is protected, does it mean no fishing?
  2. I know many on this board live in rural areas and always wondered what it is like. I would love to get out there and have a nice piece of land which would keep me busy, possibly one on the waterfront. My wife however is not too keen on the idea of being away from civilization and I understand her point of view. So what advice can you guys give me on buying land that is suited to build something down the line. I am thinking maybe a small cottage for vacationing or to drive up to on my days off. Maybe even to rent out for cottagers. I guess my question is, is it worth it? My wife is totally fine with the a few days here and there out in rural areas but not long term. Maybe buy a land and build something small. What does it cost to build a small cottage? Maybe 1500 square foot 2 bedroom unit? Maybe just buy something with a house already on it? But the intention is to buy something fairly cheap cash and build something slowly when cash is available. I know there is much more involved and would love to hear from you guys in this regards. Thanks
  3. links are not working
  4. . I agree! One of the best forums and members!
  5. Thanks for the replies. Lots of good advice from all of you. I think the 2 biggest concerns would be storage for the winter and perhaps the added fuel consumption. I will take the advice of camping a few more times, and renting one and decide at the end of fall what I want to do. If I do get one, I will be sure to let you guys know!
  6. Thanks for the reply Drifter. My Volvo has self levelling rear shocks so hopefully that should help.
  7. I would have explored the area as well as the pier in grand bend, but the rain didnt let us do much. I will check those places you mentioned when I go back in the future.
  8. So it seems like it rains at least one of days during our camping trip. My weekend schedule is not very flexible and since the kids are in school on weekdays, I usually have to stick to the plans rain or shine. My last trip, we had to pack up in the rain since the forecast was rain all day. I told my wife that I bet all the rv and trailer guys are laughing at all the tent guys right now lol. So I though about possibly investing in a small camper. A used popup camper would probably fit the bill and weight requirements. I already have a class 3 hitch installed on my SUV which is a 2004 volvo xc90 with a 2.5 litre 208 hp 5 cylinder turbocharged engine with AWD. I guess the question is, is it worth it spend 2-3 grand for a used popup camper. What is maintenance like? what is the likeliness of long term wear on my car? My SUV tow capacity is rated at 3500lbs I believe. Will I need to upgrade anything on my SUV? We are a family of 4 so not much human weight in the car aside from luggage and other essentials. I forgot to mention that we usually go camping 5-6 per year and it would be nice to use for a cross country or east coast trip instead of booking costly hotels.
  9. So went camping with the family this past weekend at Pinery Provincial Park. It rained half the time but I had a chance to fish the old Ausable channel while I was there. Got out for a good hour and was only getting small fish that were too small to even bite bait. I was using yellow and white grub. Finally went to another section which was quite shallow and had a lot of grass/weed. Every cast came back with a handful of green. Finally I decided to cast and reel back in as fast as I could literally reeling in as soon as the lure hit the water. I noticed a splash but whatever it was missed the bait. I cast out again in the same spot and same fish goes after my bait and then fish was on! Reeled it in and it turned out to be a grass pickeral. It was a adult size since from what I read they only grow up to be around 30 cms or so and this one was right around that size. I tried to get a photo but it slipped out of my hands as I went to pick it up and swam away . Anyhow, it was quite fun trying to rip through the weeds and nice to catch my first I guess you can say pike! . They are a fish of special concern so I was planning on releasing it regardless but it took off before I could do anything lol. For those that havent seen one before here is a photo of one. Looks just like pike but a nice green with dark green stripes.
  10. So looks like I won't be heading to algonquin until late September or later. I know the fish go into deeper water during the summer months. When do they come back to shallower waters for a better chance to shore fish? Thanks
  11. Why is it that people don't take them for the table? I have never tried bass, but is it because they don't taste good? I also read something about people don't keep them out of respect since their growth is slow and supposedly a 14-15 incher is suppose to be over 10 years old?!?
  12. Why does bass season start so late even though they are plentiful? Or maybe they aren't? Is it because they spawn later than other species? Clearly a lot are being caught because they are biting but cant be kept due to being OOS. I'm asking because I stopped going to my usual fishing place because that is all that is there for the last month or so. There may be other species there like bows, but the bass is all that is biting.
  13. Thanks for the late replies! Anything helps since I haven't gone yet. I will probably end up going in August so hopefully the mosquitos will be less then. I will look into Driftwood PP and the others mentioned here. If all else fails, I think I will stay at Canisbay Lake.
  14. Once I watched the video, I swear I felt one of those mosquitos came flying out of the screen. Sure enough there was something flying around the room after that lol.
  15. lol yes I have tried all the creams upto 35% just like I would put in coffee. The way the tea is made over there is that it is boiled in the milk for a while. Like I said, I don't have to have it. its just nice to try it once in a while if its available.
  16. I think it depends also on where you go camping. This time of the year is the worst I believe. A few years ago, we camped out at Awenda PP on georgian bay and the mosquitos were pretty bad. We had to keep the fire burning, and kept applying bug repellant to keep it manageable. The week after, we camped at Pinery PP on lake huron, and not a single mosquito! We have gone to Point Farms PP several times during mosquito season which is along the same shore of lake Huron an hour from Pinery and never had issues with mosquitos. This is my observation at least and I feel it may be this way due to the winds coming off the great lakes reducing the severity of mosquitos at those parks. personally I would stay away from anything up north until August.
  17. Thanks for the heads up. Just making sure, looks like there is no minimum purchase necessary. It does not mention anything like it on the website.
  18. Yeah Its pretty thick but I have no trouble drinking it when I visit the in laws back home. Now the cream that comes up after boiling it is a different story lol. Thats the stuff they make butter with and I literally tried half a spoon of it and it felt like the room was spinning lol. At home here, I use 2%.
  19. Thanks for the replies. Its not like I got to have whole milk, but being originally from india, and having tried what they use which I believe is 7%. They use the milk to make their special tea,as well as other things like butter etc. No doubt it can be made with homo milk but its nice once in a while to use the heavier stuff. I heard some stores like whole foods may carry it, so I will be checking it out. thanks!
  20. Thanks Freshtrax. I will be heading up that way sometime this summer so I will definitely check it out!
  21. My 2 rides: 2004 Volvo xc90 2.5t & 1998 Volvo s70 T5SE (Manual)
  22. boiled then cooled down lol. That's what they do back home
  23. Travelling from Oakville to Goderich on the shores of lake Huron and then down to grand bend, returning back to Oakville in a few weeks. Looking for a place where they sell farm fresh cow's milk (not the watered down version lol). I am sure there are places but if anyone knows of any farms along those routes (hwy 8 or surrounding highways going to Goderich) I would appreciate it. Also I am pretty sure you guys know the answer to this, but if I do find that milk, and boil it, I wont get sick right?
  24. Awesome! Thanks!
  25. Pier fishing is obviously very popular. Is it because the fish like to gather by the pier and therefore a better chance of catching, or is it because it is easily accessible for the public? the piers where a river meets the lake is a no brainer because of fish going into the river but how about the pier that are not connected to a river? How about fishing from the rocky or beach shores of the great lakes? I have only seen people fishing that way at parks on lake ontario, but I have never seen that at Lake Huron. Never been to Erie so not sure about that. I would assume you would have to cast out really far? When I go camping, I do go out to swim in the great lakes and get out to about 100 feet where I can still stand in the water. How much further away are the fish? Maybe they stay away from beaches or maybe they are there and can be caught after wading in that far. Just a thought I had in mind, What do you guys think? I dont mind fishing this way but would rather not look like a fool This video is interesting although it is the ocean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCfbYNyX3Us
