  1. I personally find the channel cats a pain in the butt here unless I am going for a fish fry then the 3-5 lbs are my target fish. I am lucky to have the blue catfish in my area and the current Maryland record is 81 lbs and the Virginia one is 104 lbs. I fish in the Maryland waters and the boat record is 65lbs a fish we call Fluffy due to a scar she has on her side she is easily identified. We may have lost her though she has not been caught in 2 years. The average rig we use is 4/0 circle hooks with 6-12 oz of fresh cut shad on 6 oz of lead on a 3 way. I can legally run up to 10 lines but usually run 5 in case a nest of them swarms the baits. The shad we catch are caught using a 100ft gill net that a resident can purchase a license for 10 dollars per year. I so far have taken few fish over 15lbs using prepared bait.

  2. When catfish as a species gets larger they rarely feed on store prepared /stink baits. Fresh blood be it chicken, beef, fish and the amino acids associated with these products are what the fish feel are food. Stink baits can bring them in but it is the fresh that seals the deal.

  3. Some times item are deeply discounted below their cost that the store paid for them. The inventory system takes into account how long it has been on the shelf and how many have been sold in a set time of reference. If it is below that number it is discounted and in some cases thrown out. The store has a specific amount of money that they are allowed to keep in inventory so if it is full of slow moving stock then they do not meet there sales numbers. Some of this stock is grouped together and sold in lots and this is how you see product on discount websites that are being sold for less than what they are worth.

  4. Most all of what I purchase is over the internet. Some of the places are small shops and others are Bass Pro and Cab. I usually have already seen the product so now it is more about the price and availability than anything else. I guess this line of though came about trying to find parts for vintage motorcycles and cars and it has given me such good results it has carried over into the fishing world also.

  5. The big issue on fiberglass and water intrusion is depended on a few different factors. The amount of time the hole is under water and the effects of freezing water inside of the transom. A boat that lives on a trailer will show no issues of water intrusion since it has limited time in the water. I have a trailered 1989 Ranger that has a few fiberglass dings from the old owner that went untreated for years. I sanded them back and inspected them and found no damage to the glass or structure except for a bubble in the jell coat that was easily fixed with marine tex. I did seal them all up though because if it is wet inside and the temperature goes below freezing then the ice expands and can cause damage. Case in point is my neighbors boat at the marina had a docking gash in his boat last fall and it has puffed outward below the gash from freezing over the winter.

  6. Got our second batch in the bag.. 900+ litres of sap boiling down in a couple of days! about 6 gallons of syrup. in the last one. Still too much snow in the bush here to use the four wheelers.. but not enough to use the skidoo in a few places either... next collection is gonna be difficult. I still have one more run and maybe another after that!

  7. Remember the fun foods as a kid like hotdogs on a stick , pop tarts warmed up as a breakfast or a dessert. The introduction to either sardines or vienna sausages on crackers as the best fishing lunch in the world. A good treat is also freeze dried ice cream just like the astronauts ate.
