  1. I carry a spare and replace it every 2 or 3 years. I put it in the inside because it has never caused me any problems. You might want to avoid the T screw type they will get stiff to turn and feel tight when they really arn't. The other flip style also has a nut on the end of some that you can tighten if it is a little loose.

  2. Chicken livers fresh from the grocery store work great. Catfish can follow a blood trail just as well as a stink trail. You don't have to suffer thru the smell while fishing. Most of the commercial baits stink because they don't/can't keep them fresh economically is why they keep the stinkin myth alive and well. If you want big cats then you need to feed them real fish and a good sized piece or live bait. You can find them usually under schools of bait or the edge of flats that drop off into deeper water. Catfish that are over 15 lb's are predators they can't afford to be opportunity feeders like their smaller brothers. Dusk to dawn is always a good time to fish for cats with 2-6 am being prime time for a frenzy if you have set up on the right place. Day time can also be good if you fish deep enough or the weather is overcast and about to change.

  3. Test drive a ZTR before you buy one with a steering wheel. The ZTR can cut down the lawn cutting time to 1/2 of the time with a steering wheel mower. The steering wheel mowers have to make a sweeping turn at the end of each pass or you have to cut squares to maximize your cutting time. The ZTR (zero turn radius) mowers you can cut down one strip then down right next to the strip you cut. That blows the grass in seperate directions so you dont have to cut the grass into a pile. You also can go out and trim around 99 % of the lawn obsticals cutting way down on your weedeating time. As mentioned do not get a unit that is not hydrolically driven the FAKE belt driven hydromatic units are junk and are made by MTD but sold as other brands including Huskavarna, Husky, John Deere and Yardman. A hydrolic unit will have two hoses per wheel that go down to the hub assy on the wheels. Since the motor is driving a hydrolic pump it is much more efficent and will not bog down as much in heavy grass like a belt driven unit it sends more power to the blades that cut the grass. The old steering wheel unit was collecting so much dust that we now drop it off at a retired gentlemans house every spring so he can cut his grass.... since he does not fish he has all of the time in the world to cut his grass.

  5. I have a Garmin 188 b/w on one boat and a lowrance 525 C on the other. The lowrance chip is the navionics chip which is used by 6 other companies while the Garmin maps are only Garmin. The detail on the navionics chip are update more frequently and the platinum series is just as colorful as the Garmin 3D chip. The hardware is about the same if you match the peak power and the resolution then the only thing different will be the bells and whistles and the ease of use. The Lowrance is easier to incorporate other features like Radar, fuel usage monitor, fuel level, temp. and other sensors for larger boats.

As far as if it breaks you lose both of the units when you buy 2 separate units you pay for 2 units rather than 1 screen. With both units in the same place getting beat up the same amount and lightning only a storm away I am betting that most of the time both units get fried or the one that breaks is a defect that shows up in the first year.

  6. Lowrance 525 cDF was my choice. The color is more than "nice" it is a way to tell the difference between floating debris and fish. Between bait balls and schooling fish by tuning the color bands up or down. Dual beams are very nice because they will give you the overview and the bottom contour. The external antenna is only needed if you have a hardtop above the unit.Lowrance units also have the ability to add fuel usage and tank level or Radar to the unit with only having to add the sender units so one screen does it all. The Navionics chip has been updated and has alot of detail from the tides, marina and buoys or obstructions built into the map. Since navionics supports 6 different manufactures units they are more likely to keep their maps current and in the future have strong enough support to stay as the preferred files. I also have a Gamin unit which is B/W gps/sounder it is nice but for the extra $200.00 I would have gone color had I known.

  7. Hey lew I just installed a lawrance 525 on the boat with chart plotter. If you are nmea 2000 unit you will see 3 cables on the power plug. Two sets are Red Black and white and the other set is 5 wires. The five wire is for an other use so do not worry about them for now. The other 2 sets , wire the 2 reds together to the positive and the two blacks together to the negative. The white wires are not needed. If your does not have two sets of power wires then your unit does not have a 2000 buss terminal that need the power for the GPS to work. Mine is an external GPS and Dephfinder with speed and temp all feeding in from cables. If this does not make a difference then try this..... Turn on the unit and find initialize the GPS then use the curser to get it into the general area. Those are what I needed to do to get mine to find the area I was in before that it was trying to find me in the middle of the

    USA.

  8. I have the new Classic card and it was 99.99 and it has port information and dynamic tide info with alot of the obstructions listed. I don't see why they would sell off the newest edition at a discount unless they are ramping up to release an even newer edition of the gold series. You might want to check the version of the maps before you buy or realize you are getting the previous version which is not bad either.

  9. get a console life is to short to not have a cigar in one hand and a beer in the other and steering with your knee. Actually get the boat you will be happy with it sucks to be driving a beautiful boat and wishing for something else. Just ask Roy and Spiel they both have their brave faces on saying how they like their tillers.

  10. Sorry most of the rods have names like Bass rod or Catfish rod I would have trouble keeping track of all of the names if I did anything else. Well actually I have one rod with a name it is ART and is being built by Chris for delivery at Lak Air I can hardly wait.

  11. One of the ways you get a deer to stop running and pause is to whistle at them. It might have the same effect when they are crossing the road. The best advise is to brake as much as you can and still be under control and steer for the rearend of the deer. Dusk to dawn are also high traffic times for deer movement.

  12. When a snappin turtle goes into the hole he goes in face first. When you noodle into a hole if you touch shell or feet you don't double check that hole because he will turn around and be facing out by then. Ask "lefty" or "4 finger Fred" about that. Juggin for Cats is still one of my favorite ways to fish for a catfish fry. We run usually 4 orange jugs across the flats with chicken livers on them. We float them in front of the boat and use the trolling motor to keep the boat back but in the area till we get a strike and then chase it down. Using small jugs in deep water is a no no because if the fish can get back to a snag and get tangled and die you have done a disservice to a fine sporting fish.
