We spend lots of time studying new bodies of water on the Navionics web app or Navionics app on our phones & tablets before ever heading out on them. When on the water, we follow the mapping on the Garmin LakeVu chip or the Navionics chip on my partners' boats. Even then respect any "iffy" areas, it'll save you a lower unit. Be safe out there!
