Why are people so quick to pull the race card? Hotrod is completely right... this really isn't about Natives. It is about the fact that commercial fishing should not be done on Nipissing, especially with kill nets across Spring spawning grounds. Nobody should be doing this. It is destroying Nipissing's natural fishing population and has other environmental effects (and increasing economic effects on the area due to a decline in tourism). The fact that around 2/3 of the fish harvested from Nipissing are taken by these nets is a MAJOR problem (aside from how, when and where they are being taken), and debatably THE premier problem (among many smaller problems) with the declining Nipissing fishery. The government needs to stop this from happening, period. It is the Natives that are the only ones allowed to do this, so that's why they are being brought up. But if aliens came down to earth and started harvesting fish in the Spring spawn with kill nets, we would be outraged as well. Not because they are aliens, but because this is happening. So, don't pull the race card because that has nothing to do with this. Bottom line is that it is happening on Nipissing and needs to be stopped. If the individuals who are doing it are not going to govern themselves and have the insight to stop doing it, then the government needs to step in... end of story.

There would be no other group or nationality that would be allowed to commercially fish this lake. How is it that only the natives are allowed to do it. This has gone way beyond what the initial intent of them being able take out of the lake for personal use. The problem is that there are two laws in this country. One for the natives and another for the rest of us. As long as this continues there will be no end or resolve to this issue. All people are created equal and should be governed by the same law that looks to the well being of all it's citizens. Any exceptions to this rule only causes problems. That is why we have this problem with COMMERTCIAL FISHING on this lake.
