... I knew what to do when I turned on my F717 and saw a pastel painting.

Sony has extended the recall. It does not appear to have an expiry date.

2nd Revision: September 25, 2007. Important Notice concerning Sony CCD Imager in manufactured from October 2002 through March 2004 located in a variety of Products

September 25, 2007

Issued: October 3, 2005 Revised: November 24,2006; 2nd Revision: September 25, 2007

It has come to Sony of Canada Ltd.'s attention that a limited number of Sony digital camera, camcorder and personal digital assistant (PDA) products that incorporate a charge-coupled device (CCD) or image sensor device, manufactured from October 2002 through March 2004, may exhibit the following condition:

When the product is used in camera mode, the liquid crystal display (LCD) panel and/or electronic viewfinder displays either a distorted image or no image at all.

Sony Corporation has determined that this condition occurs very rarely, but may be accelerated if an affected product is exposed to high temperature and/or high humidity environments.

In an effort to ensure customer satisfaction, Sony of Canada Ltd. has elected to offer, effective October 3, 2005, free out-of-warranty repair to owners of affected Sony digital camera, camcorder and PDA products that exhibit the aforementioned condition caused by the image sensor device. A good reminder SlowPoke. I also had my 717 repaired free of charge.

If your camera is on the list above and starts to exhibit photos like the one below, you're most likely eligible for a free repair.
