  1. Lol guess I shoildnt get drunk and time my islander then. Was just curious is all as ive seen the discussionbefore. And btw kemper, I didnt think an islandsr was a flash reel, I thoufht the sst3 was in the same class?....and if it aint broke why would you fix or change it? Lol im actually pretty new to the pin. But billm having a frogwater is soo nice. I can appreciate the beauty that is within reels and rods, and until lately have started to notice how sweet some pins are.

So at the end of.the day, ppl say islander startup is possibly slow. So, I did the spin test just cause and the elastic band startup, and said "hey, thats cool it started on the elastic band...slow in the froggy stuff startup cant be that bad!:? But because I dont have a life, naturally I decided to do this. And for a relatively affordable pin reel id say that sounds "a" ok to me....but what do I know. I was hoping somebody would have had a abec 3 and abec 7 model to see if its truely worth spending the extra $$$ on the 7's. Personal experiences with particular reels vary, so i guess comparison wouldnt really be relavant in the end...

  2. Hey guys

I have an islander steelheader, very low hours, I simple green'd the bearings and put 1 drop of oil in each bearings. I get a 4.5-5.5 minute free spool on it. I put an elastic band (simple avg size, not a broccoli sized band) on the end of the line on a 13' rod to see if it would get this puppy moving, and it did. It was VERY slow and gradual, without me quivering the rod. Lol sadly the kingpin r2 spins longer, and starts up a little better......but I was really impressed to be honest.

Anybody ever wasted time like me and timed their free spool and checked the startup weights needed on a Islander steelheader?....

  3. Every company has their strengths, and quite possible their strengths are in their (okuma) heavier duty stuff. You like their heavier duty stuff so much, you buy their bass gear. one model fails, you move on to the next, which (hopefully) holds up. Then you're content or happy, or you move on.

Daiwa lowest end I HATE. if i started with low end daiwa and had the failures i had, id verbally blast the company. As i stand now, midrange daiwa....I'd choose shimano.....high end? Very large toss up with daiwa shimano. Abu? I'm model specific. Pfluegar, never tried long enough....just like lews....never had enough time. Quantum?.......guys, I'm sorry, they (most) are built VERY well, overbuilt in many cases, yet the ones I've used have only been as strong as their weakest link....which SUCKS!.....again no offence here, but there are reasons anglers become "brand specific". I started okuma "high end bass" and they fell wayyyyy short.....but that's JUST my experience. But they were all new to the market gear....

I guess also that a sour taste can be put into ppls mouth by purchasing new to the market products and/or the lemon model of the bunch. Just like buying the first model year of a vehicle........

Oh and btw, rod companies annoy me the most....I cant pick a specific brand . They are all great and suck at the same time.

  4. Everything I have ever purchased from Okuma has self-destructed almost immediately.

    Never again.

Agreed. The rods gave me a sour taste as well starting with the carbon c3......inferior rods and reels IMO, not to say quality can't change, maybe things are diff now, but I'm not going there anytime soon.

That's also too bad about the carbon lite, some ppl really like its performance, glad I didn't pop out to buy a few.

    Did u take it apart?

  5. Imo I feel they dropped the ball on the new curado. Ppl are hating on the calcutta d, I have a 200d and set it 2brakes and forget it. ITS BETTER than the TE hands down imo. But nobody will ever give it a chance because of bad rep. Just means more for me when on sale!

  6. Hey,

I was hoping to hit the niagara bar and promised myself that id go to the bar before november.

So, does anybody know a launch on the canadian side where I can launch which is close to the niagara bar lower niagara etc

    thanks!

  7. Ive seen the problem a few times also.....parts are getting harder, that part is prob. discontinued , not to say parts arent available on the aftermarket. Clutch plate bnt2570?....

best thing is to take off the sideplate and push the plate down by hand then up. Ive seen problems on the actual thumb clutch-bar guide area, which was annoying to diagnose, and it sucks when you dont have the parts on hand.

Good luck hope it all works out for yuh!

  8. pegged largies in lower niagara shallower than the smallies this past weekend. Mind you i was dropshot/deep crankbait. 10ft or so feet LMB, smallies 20-30ft. Dont see why u wouldnt get them if you find a concentration of them.

temp and green weed play a HUGE role wherever u are fishing thats for sure. As you stated, you know the area and catch, so go to your milk runs and give it a try, it shouldnt hurt?!

    good luck
