  1. Anyone heard of a $60 hunting season pass for a marsh in Orangeville which when purchased also allows you to hunt in other designated areas/marshes?

My dad remembers seeing a sign at one of the marshes around Orangeville last year but decided not to hunt there and never bought the pass but is thinking of doing so this year.

So rather than him driving up just to get the phone number, I told him that I could google it..but I have had no luck. So I am asking here in case someone is familiar with this pass. If so, do you have a site I can visit or phone number I can call? Thanks.

  2. I am going to Simcoe on Sunday and was wondering if trolling for Lake Trout at this time of the season is worth it or not. I have all the equipment, just need to know if I should jut focus on Pike and Perch in Cook's Bay or head for deeper water and try for some Lakers.

I'll be taking my 6 year old son with me, so I don;t want to be trolling for hours and having him get bored. Then again I wouldn;t mind trying for about an hour to break up the day - just wanted to know if it was worth the effort to bring the downrigging equipment.

    Cheers.

  3. My dad and I love to fish together and have also spent some time the last few years hunting but with little success in the latter sport.

He heard that there are hunting opportunities in and around Lake Simcoe that is accessible by the public and wanted to know if I knew anything/anywhere to go. In the past we have hunted around Shelbourne but that has been very hit and miss the last couple of years. I am not familiar with the Lake Simcoe hunting areas so I wouldn't even know where to start looking.

I am throwing this out with the hopes that a member of the board can point me in the right direction. I am looking for a guide or someone to go hunting with in and around Lake Simcoe for Geese/Ducks? Willing to pay for a 1/2 days outing as this would make a perfect gift for my dad's 60th birthday coming up in a couple of weeks.

  4. I have one for sale in the classified section...actually my dad is selling it but I am helping advertize.

It is on a 2009 Chevy Silverado - 8 foot box. And it is only 3 weeks old.

He decided to go with the truck cap now and is selling the cover for much less than he paid. Asking $450 when he just paid $630+ for it.

    Call me if interested....905-893-4186

  5. But my accent is probably because of the 6 languages I spoke. Make that 7 languages – American (before 1981 I used to go down to the States every week-end.)

Does that mean I am bi-lingual if I too can speak American, as well as Canadian? Just messing with you - my parents are immigrants as well...and I am sure we all appreciate what this country is and continues to be made of. Like someone posted, sarcasm/joking sometimes comes out wrong without actually hearing the tone or knowing the person making those comments.

  6. I have an old Eagle Suprapro ID fish finder on my boat that I have grown very comfortable with to the point where I can actually see a Salmon just before it hits my lure when trolling in Lake Ontario. It works great and it does what I need it to do so I don't think I need to spend hundreds on a newer unit.

Anyway, now that I justified why I have this old unit, to the point of my post:

The transducer cable is worn out where it attaches to the back of the unit to the point that it occassionally pops out when running at high speeds and I have to then plug it back and re-do my settingst. It is a little bit of a pain on choppy days.

So, does anyone have one of these units they want to part with for a reasonable price?

    Thanks

    Frank

  7. Most sail boats and larger boats have a grounding rod that pushes the hit into the water. I have been out in all sorts of storms on a sail boat where going to "shore" is not really an option.

~ I think I must have been a few min ahead of you at bronte, that was a great storm. When I hear the thunder I leave the water no matter how far away it seems as it can travel fast.

Mother Nature can be a mean BiT$CH when she wants to be don't temp it

Thanks for the info...learn something every day. We were off of Port Credit so the storm may have hit you first but it was coming from a Northerly West direction so it wasn't too far behind.

  8. Funny, we were just having this conversation the other day. We were out on Lake Ontario two weeks ago and saw a storm coming towards us. We decided to leave and just made it back to the launch just as the wind picked up and the lightning started striking. But at the same time, we saw a few sailboats still out on the lake looking like they were still heading out and not in. Obviously that is not a smart thing to do - especially with their long mast. Or do they have something that protects them from the strike - like being able to ground the lightning some how if they were struck?

Also what happens at sea when a big ship/tanker gets struck by lightning - I would assume that happens more regularly? Is there anything that protects them from a strike? Or do they just hope they don;t get hit?

  9. Good to hear you are getting it fixed at a reasonable price. I always make my self feel better by saying it could have been worse.

This past Spring Sal helped me out too. I had the motor on my boat re-built last spring at Discount Marine and at the beginning of this year, one of the pistons was causing the boat to stall at top end. Without hesitation Sal agreed to fix the problem - no charge even though my warranty had certainly expired on the rebuild. Considering I used the boat all of last year without any problem, I was at least expecting to pay something. Goes to show, he is really a good guy not out to fleece anybody.

Say hi to Sal for me when you pick it up - and let him know his consideration and reasonable prices are appreciated.

  10. If you check my history of posts I had the same issue back in April this year. I took it back to the Marina that rebuilt it last year and they fixed the problem.

It was bad compression in one cylinder. They had to bore that cylinder out and replace the piston, seals, etc...They did this all for free, since I just had it rebuilt the year before. But as I said, it had the same symptoms as you.

  11. - the pickup truck only has front seats?

    - or if it is a 2-seater vehicle?

I can't find this answer anywhere on MTO website and unless someone can point me to where it is (officially), I will have to call them directly (no doubt waiting on the phone forever).

I know that I'd have to turn off the airbag for them and they will be in a booster.

Wondering if anyone else looked this up before?

And since this is a place full of so much knowledge, thought I'd post and see.

    Cheers

  12. Hands down - Lake Ontario. Where your chances of success are the best out of all the lakes for downrigging, plus you might catch yourself a 30 lb+Salmon. And you can run two rods per angler (ie. maybe stick to a maximum of 3 or 4 rods until you get used to it).

No need to stay away from Lake Ont because of the derby. In fact, I see it as more of a reason to go there... you may get some pointers from other anglers (if you ask) or even from the person at one of the weigh stations.

    Good luck.

  13. I used to fish Heart Lake a few years ago and the trout were mostly caught from shore using powerbait (the gooey stuff - in green or orange) that you would put on a salmon egg hook. Completely cover the hook with a ball of this stuff.

The set up I'd use is: tie a swivel to the end of your line with an egg sinker loose above the swivel (a good size sinker so you can launch it out there from shore) then tie a 2 foot 6-pound test fluorocarbon line to the other the end of the swivel and at the end of that line, tie the salmon egg hook.

Launch the line out there, let it sink for a few seconds so it settles to the ground, and then prop up your rod on shore and start tightening the line slowly. Once it is nice and tight, sit back and watch the tip of your rod. If it jiggles, set the hook and start up the barbecue.

Catfish, bass, bluegill, rock bass are also in the lake. If you do not use the powerbait, more often than not one of these panfish will get to your bait before the trout do...that is why you need the powerbait - seems to be liked only by the trout.

Also corn would work on the trout on occassion (the one from the can). But the catfish seem to like the stuff too so you are not always sure what is biting when you do get a hit.

    Good luck.

  14. Depends on what you are after, but on occassion I like taking my 6 year old son and 3 year old daughter to Glenn Haffey on Airport Rd just south of Highway 9. They have 2 ponds stocked with Rainbow Trout.

Some consider it expensive but when you consider any other type of outing, it really isn't that bad.

We make a day out of it for the whole family and also have a picnic, etc..

If you do go there, use very small worms (the ones you dig up - not dew worms) on a salmon egg hook under a bobber. Otherwise, a small number 1 or 2 Mepps spinner (I like silver) works great too. I usually set my son up with the worm while I use the spinner.

You are allowed to keep 2 trout each. They're only about 1-2 pounds but are great eating. Although I have seen trout up to 5 pounds stocked on occassion.

And get there when it opens, as I found we have the best success being the first ones fishing but you should be able to catch fish throughout the day.
