1. Hey All, So I have two gems I wanted to bring to your collective attention, if you haven't already heard of them. These get me primed up just before trout season opens and when I need my trout fix. The first is The Underwater World of Trout series, which is a set of 3 DVD's. It covers Discovery, Feeding Lies, Trout Vision and Refraction, and Not Just Trout. Wendell Ozefovich is an amazing underwater photographer and the way he describes what he sees (often sounding "scientific") pulls you in. This is not the same as a flashy fishing show video, it really focuses on the habitat and behaviour of brook trout. I find that it has given me a better understanding of their life cycle and "mind set", so it opens my eyes to where they might be hiding. I highly suggest you check out Ozzie's website and see the excerpts from his video on the webpage. You can also order the set for I think $55, or $20 bucks per DVD. http://www.underwateroz.com/ I am in no way related to or associated with the website, I just really enjoy these videos and feel they are among the best I have found. Also, for the resourceful internet savvy individuals, you might be able to find them online somewhere. The second video I wanted to mention is Eastern Rises. Here is a trailer . This is seriously one of the best made and enjoyable movies I have ever seen. I have tried typing out a couple lines to describe this video and I just can't. I refuse to not do it justice, it gives me chills just watching it. Please, do yourself a favour and watch the trailer and for the internet savvy individual you can find the whole video online. To purchase it and support the film makers it is ~$25 I think. Here is their website http://www.easternrises.com/. Oh yea, and it won Best Film on Mountain Sport at the 2010 Banff Mountain Film Festival. I'd be interested to hear what everyone thinks and what your favourite fish/fishing videos are. That's it for now, I'm going to watch Eastern Rises again...
2. Spec's, Spec's, and more Spec's.

3. Now that's a feast fit for a King. What are these go-getters that you were mentioning? They seemed to do a great job! Thanks for sharing the story!
4. AWESOME!! I love being wrong sometimes! Thanks for the link
5. Let me know when you're drinking on the water so I can stay clear... I was genuinely surprised by this particular post, because it went from a thread I was happy to contribute to, to one I'm not sure if I should stay a part of. The conservation fees, laws, and fishing licences are designed to help protect the environment and allow for continued investment in our fisheries so we may continue to enjoy them. The heavily populated GTA might require slightly higher fees to help moderate the overuse of the land. It is a supply and demand industry and having too high a demand might cripple the resource to the part where it may collapse. It is unfortunate to hear that in the Ottawa/Hull area you never heard of a fishing licence, could drink and drive (a boat), never heard of a "conservation area", among other things. I'm still shaking my head at that post... Not surprised Sun News (aka Fox "News" North) is in the background...
6. I had given some tips on the lakes/areas in question after scouring the Guelph area for great locales and even giving some of my general "spots" away to be kind. I felt they should be deleted after reading your following posts.
7. I saw that rebate too, but I'm pretty certain it is only redeemable in the United States http://image.basspro.com/images/images2/free-offers/2011ShimanoCompreCoupon.pdf
8. It snapped in two spots to make it a 4 piece? Yikes if that's the case. Though, that is a beauty catch!
9. Oh, I met a store owner yesterday who compared a 6' okuma celilo ultralight to a Shimano Compre... The only thing that bothered me is, that it has left me wondering what information or advice I should trust from him as I don't believe those two rods are really comparable... Thoughts or Comments?
10. Thanks for the links Tony, I'll definitely check them out. *Edit* I just checked them out and the TLFS 603-2 is what I've been looking for in a rod for the last month or so. Does anyone have any experience with this brand yet? I'm almost sold, but the price seems low... not that I'm complaining Yea, I've heard that the shipping cost for St. Croix warranty claims is outrageous. Though I do believe the shop I'm likely going to buy from (whatever it might be) ships out the rods themselves, so it either reduces or removes any cost associated with shipping. Which is a big big bonus. I'm leaning towards the Compre right now, but I'm still heavily in the midst of choosing the best rod for me. It's taking a little while, but I'm not going to lie, I love researching fishing gear!!
11. A Stradic would definitely be a nice complement to an UL rod. I am currently casting a Symetre 2500, which is a lot smoother than my old Abu Garcia Cardinal 3 was... I really wonder why very few companies offer a 2 piece 6' light action spinning rod. The vast majority are 1 piece, which sucks if you travel a lot to fish.
12. Great photos and commentary! That's the kind of fishing day I long for
13. Those speck's look great! Thanks for sharing the photos, especially the underwater ones. Have fun with the new toy!
14. Hey All, I am getting a new rod in the next couple of weeks and I just thought I would see what brands people are favouring for quality and feel. I am going with either a 5'6" or 6'0" (max), it must be a 2 piece of equal length and preferably light action. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on a brand to check out? I was looking at G. Loomis, St. Croix, and Shimano. Does anyone have any great experiences or equally bad ones to share? Edit: It has to be a spinning rod.
15. I saw a 16-20" trout in the Speed River a couple years ago right near the quarry, around opening day. Maybe sit tight and see if you can find that one, no sense going out of town Maybe try the Grand River at the Shand Dam, it might be busy, but should be decent fishing... Tight lines and clear skies!
16. I couldn't agree more! Torco, yea if there is the rain they are predicting then I'll likely keep away from the Credit, but I know a number of tribs that don't get dirty so I'll just hit them instead... I can't wait, even if it means I'll be dripping when I'm done!
17. I hear ya torco, I live in the Guelph area and noticed the crappy weather heading our way. I was planning on hitting the Credit for a weekend of bliss (I'm from Caledon), though now I might just have to be satisfied dipping my line in the water. Are you planning on fishing the Grand for bows and browns? I had the misfortune last lear of trying to fish the Grand after a rainstorm and it was near impossible using my fly rod... I typically spin cast so I'm not too concern about the Credit, but I really wish Mother Nature had taken a weekend off. Tight lines!
18. Thanks for the tips Twocoda. Do you have any advice on colour combination? I often use black and silver original raps or blue and white with success in rivers, but not much in GBay.
19. Hey All, So I have a question to pose to the many experts who fish Georgian Bay, particularly the shoreline.
View Larger Map I want you to look at the location I have linked above. I heard that decades ago there was a commercial fishery based in D'Aoust Bay, that would fish Lake Huron and Georgian Bay for a variety of species. I am a pretty experienced river fisherman and I prefer to work shorelines wherever I go. The location on that map is basically a rock break wall that I just started to fish from last summer, without much success. I did land a number of smaller smallmouth bass and had a single 18-22" rainbow (I think) smash my lure. What I am hoping to learn from your combined wisdom is what lures (size, colour, style, etc) do you find work well from shore when targeting trout or salmon? The water is usually very clear, 10-20+ feet deep, and has some boulders further out. Also, I spin cast. P.s. 5 days till honey hole fishing on the Credit!! Cheers
20. Thanks for that link! What a great article to read and pictures to see. It really gives you perspective of how much we really can change. Kudos!
21. I'm envious of them all, especially the first one. Great job, and thanks for the pics!
22. I was wondering what species of fish will be up near the Norval dam? I know at the dam is a fish sanctuary, but I am curious about the bridge and below to Hwy 7. Is there trout or salmon (are salmon able to get up that far in the fall) around there still or does the Streetsville dam prevent them from getting further? I was there last night and didn't have much luck other than a couple nice bits. So I'm just curious Thanks!
23. Hey all! So I had to pick up the parents yesterday evening from the airport but thought I would go to my special spot on the Credit River for some daytime fishing. Well, surprisingly I have never landed a Brown trout, though I have had many on over the past few years. I typically prefer to fish barbless hooks so I find the trout can shake the hooks easier too. Anyways, the location I was fishing doesn't have any "special" regulations so either way I can go barbless or not. So to make a long story short I got to my spot around 11am and walked up the river fishing towards my sweet spot. From 11am until about 4pm I managed to catch and land 8 brown trout, and as a bonus another 5 rainbows. The largest was a brown around 13" and rainbow close to the same. None were less than 10 and everyone of them fought like a dream! I didn't keep any, as I wasn't going home anytime soon but I had an amazing day and just wanted to share the experience of landing my first 8 browns!! Sorry, I was on my own and I typically don't take pics when river fishing because I don't like to keep the fish out of the water while I try to take a pic.
24. Definitely would suggest a Shimano Symetre 2500FJ. I just picked one up from a place on Hwy 7 east of Cambridge/Kitchener. It cost about 120, so a bit more than you mentioned. I researched a bunch of reels quite a bit being buying one last month. I had narrowed it down to three Shimano reels. The Sedona, Symetre, and Sahara. I personally would save for a couple more weeks and get the Symetre, it is just an amazing reel and I couldn't imagine not having it now that I bought it. I really love it. But if you don't want to splurge on the Symetre, then I would suggest the Sedona. It is $99 everywhere I believe and I think even Canadian tire might sell that one. Either way if you get a Shimano, I would go with a 2500 series model. It is medium duty and can handle finesse/ light weight ( 5'6"ugly stick of mine) rods, and can also take care of a 34" walleye on a 6' 6" rod. Go with a good quality and highly regarded company and you won't be disappointed!!! Tightlines!
25. I sure did!! Next time I head over there I'll call him by his name
