  1. It all depends on the pike...under 30 inches it doesn't really matter. :)

The opportunities you have at trophy pike are limited. So you remember the fails. Swivels are the number one weak spot probably because the pike sometimes bites right on the swivel. I've had them opened several times. I use braided usually under 20 pounds. Occasionally it gives or is broken off. Good braided used right is just so consistently dependable and a pleasure to use. Mono? uhuh...especially as you get into the thicker mono needed. I'd fish with nothing less then 15 pound mono for trophies...you get up into the 20s and higher and it just does not have a good feel malfunctions with heavy use on spinning. Now the leader...wire will decrease the bite #s. Fluro 100 pounds usually does the trick but had an instant bite off on 125 pound good fluro this summer. Like a knife went right through it, clean cut edge. I'm rethinking leaders.

When I'm purposely chasing toothy critters I use titanium leaders.

I use flouro when chasing trout and usually end up with a bunch of pike as they hang together in the fall.

Haven't had any bite offs as I'm usually trolling big spoons and they get caught in the jaw and not deep where their teeth could hit the leader.

  2. Every winter I used to put my winter reels in the freezer for a day, just to make sure they wouldn't do that. The one's that did got a major cleaning.

I stick em out on the porch.

It's way colder there than in my freezer!!!!! :tease::tease::tease:

  3. Yup, grease is thickening due to the cold.

Happens with all reels up here unless you remove the factory grease and use something lighter.

I clean out the factory grease and relube with hot sauce for flawless cold weather use.

  4. Would take a Yamaha or Suzuki over a Merc.

    HMMMM, why is that?

Have had a Merc on my boat since '91.

Re-powered in 2013 and put on another because the first was so good to me.

Haven't heard any issues with the Zuke's but have heard some with the Yammies in the salt (exhaust manifold corrosion issues).

I think pretty much all motors are on a level playing field these days.

  5. Thanks for the response Ironmaker and great point. I think camping would be the best option for me. We have a great tent/setup. We would be open to renting a Cottage/ trailer though if the price was cheap enough.

I think we are thinking June/July for timing as well.

I hope this helps for some ideas.

If you have a boat Beausoleil Island out of Honey Harbour is a really good time.

Lots of good fishing too. ;)

  6.

Bang on information. Aluminum has it's advantages over glass but ride isn't one of them.

Correct, glass is quite a bit heavier so it gives you a smoother ride.

Aluminium on the other hand being lighter you need less motor for the same kind of performance, is easier on gas and towing.

And the big one for me is the ability to beach it in shield country without chewing the crap out of the bottom. ;)

  7. Got to admit I like the looks of those Crestliner boats like the one Charlie Wray runs.

Same with the Princecraft the Fishin' Canada guys run.

My boat has been a really good one as it's now 26 years old.

It's a Fisher and the best thing about it is the lack of wood.

Only the transom core is wood. The floor is all carpeted aluminum.

I agree with the sentiment that an 18 footer will be better for a family of 4.

A walk through with a standup cover will also keep the fam dry and happy.

Have fun with your purchase. :)

  8. As much as I like the idea of cougars in the area, I still am not convinced. I know a bunch of folks that basically work and live in the bush - biologists, foresters, trappers - and also know that game cameras are all over the place: but no photos, no solid tracks, no scat, no kill sites, no credible witness. I am still waiting to be convinced.

One winter at our place in Grand Valley both of my parents saw a large cat in our back yard.

I asked them to describe it to me and it was definitely a cougar.

Wish they thought of taking a pic. :(

  9. Read an article last week about how $70 Mil is missing out of the MNR fund.

Looks like it may have been used for things other than it's intended purpose.

You think this won't happen with the Libs new carbon tax?

Remember when they brought in the fishing licenses and how they said all funds generated form sales of them would go to the MNR?

Also remember that they didn't tell us all existing funding was being stripped so they could use it elsewhere.

The net result was the MNR funding decreased because the license fees were less than the original funding.

We all though the license fees were a great thing because the MNR would have way more money to protect the resource, stocking etc.

    Yeah, we were all taken.

And now there's that missing $70,000,000.

I wonder where it all went. :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:
