  1. Will likely want a 130 hp or better 150h hp 4 stroke with a 18-19 ft IMO

Got a 90 on my 18 footer and it cruises at 25-27mph and tops out at 35-36mph.

It's rated for max 115 hp.

Make sure you look at the max hp rating of the hull and get an OB within 20% of max and you will be fine.

  2. I don't buy it either.

I would expect to see boxers, MMA and pro football competitors to be killing themselves all over the place if stress and brain injuries were to blame. More likely is depression and substance abuse because they were not happy with their lives and hardly getting to play the game they loved growing up.

  3. Fall is also a great time to buy a boat, people always trying to get rid of their toys :)

I'm looking for a 12' tinny right now to drop into a back lake up here.

Problem is there are very few available so I have my buddies in Alaksa looking for me so I can pick one up in the fall. Got a line on a 14' jon/trailer that needs a new transom for $100. I can probably unload the trailer for $50 and carry the boat on my roof rack and have a $50 boat to leave in the bush. :thumbsup_anim:

  4. Just remember you will get a better price in the winter.

Expect to pay at least $2000 more come the spring on a 17' boat package.

I saved a couple of grand when I bought my camper 2 years ago by buying it in February rather than waiting for spring.

  5. First thing you need to know is that most new vehicles have ignition disabling devices built in now. You need to know how to get around them in the installation of the unit.

If you are not proficient in automotive electrical get someone who is to install it.

I spent 20 years in the industry and it's not as simple as throwing it in and hooking it up.

Second is I would get a two way unit. ie it tells you via the remote that the vehicle has started. Also if you parking in very cold temps with no plug in available you will want one you can program to come on at a preprogrammed interval so your vehicle starts for you in the morning. The better ones can be programmed to say start up for 15 minutes every few hours.

  6. Yeah a few hours is fine.

When I moved to Yellowknife I parked my cube truck out front but didn't plug it in.

Overnight temps were in the mid -40's. It would only click when I tried to turn it over.

Plugged it in and 2 hours later it started fine. I do have battery blankets on all my vehicles as well. It makes them turn over like it's 70* outside. Warming the battery makes a big difference.

I don't bother to plug in until average lows are below -15C. I could wait until -20C but the extra wear on the engine is not worth the electricity savings. IMHO

  7. Holy smoke, what a fish!!! And he has a belly like he's been sitting on the couch drinking beer.

How about the story behind it---we'd love to hear it! (Don't say you lost an even bigger one before that!thumbsup_anim.gif).

    Not mine.

It was caught by a guest up at the lodge this past season.

  8. propane is a "wet" heat and why you don't need a humidifier when heating a house with propane.

    Depends where you live Irish.

My house is pretty dry and I heat with propane.

Every time I move in the winter and touch something grounded lightning bolts shoot out of my fingers!!! :w00t:

PS condensation isn't an issue @ -40!!! :whistling:

It turns to ice before it ever gets a chance to drip on you!!! :tease:

  9. Whats the best place to get the sunflower heaters? To they have a low oxygen shutoff?

They do not have a low oxygen shut off.

I leave the door of my shelter open most of the time.

I bought one off ebay and my latestI got at CTC.

The CTC one needed some work so I could cook on it though (it's not a Mr Heater brand).

It had a tilt sensor which I bypassed and removed as well as a support bracket that needed to be shifted and reworked.

The Mr Heater one I had was much easier to adapt to cooking on as it had none of the safety features that the new one has. :D

  10. I saw 11 pounders either in HHardware's site or CTC... I'll go look again!

As for heating/cooking.. I bet they have a hard time getting water to boil for Mr. Noodles on the buddy.

Also guys.. be careful with these "open flame" ideas. They all equal carbon monoxide at a higher level than using a catalytic sunflower style burner.

They do have the 11 pounders @ HH but not the one I want.

They have the tall narrow ones and I want the short squat one as they are much harder to knock over.

This is the style HH carries

And this is the style I'm looking for.

  11. Yes Jay... you just have to carefully turn the burner system 90 degrees from the way it comes out of the box. Then you can turn it where it attaches to the tank and you have a nice "cook" surface. A little trick that Ronny Reyns taught me! :worthy:

    That's what I do too.

I'm currently waiting for my local Superior guys to get me pricing on an 11# tank. My 5 pounder lasts 2 to 3 outings usually.

My home heating is propane so during the summer I'm going to look at adding a connection so I can fill my own bottles rather than having to go and have them filled. Seems the only time I run out is on a weekend when Superior is closed and the other local guys buy their propane from Superior and jack up the price before reselling it. My 5# is around $5 to fill at Superior and $16 at the other guys. :w00t:

  12. If you're going to the West end see Aaron @ Sundowners beach bar, he has 22' Grady White with a 150 on the back. Pricing is $80/hr and includes all food, beer, soft drinks etc.

Ny buddy Andrew is here in YK to work the ice road again this winter and he and his wife live in Roatan. He uses Aaron to take clients for him when his boat is down.

  13. Mike

I really like the Smokercraft myself.

It looks infinately more fishable and has better seating to boot!!!

The only thing missing is the standup top.

Drop into your local marina and see what one would cost.

The guys at Pt. Credit marina (can't remember the name) do good work.

Cost for a full custom travel cover for my 18 footer was $600 back 10 years or so ago.

I would guess that a full top including bows would be $1500-$2000.

I think the Smokercraft is a better looking boat too.

Gas mileage difference between the two should not be excessive, especially if you keep it in the sweet spot when running and don't run WOT all over the place. ;)

I run my boat just under 4,000 rpm and get pretty decent mileage considering I have a 20 year old 90 on the back. But when I go over that 4,000 rpm barrier I can hear the difference in the motor and you can actually watch the gas needle move!!! :w00t:

Can't wait to drop a 4 stroke on the back and watch my gas mileage double. B)
