  1. The pic with (I believe that to be Craig Blackie, Phd in char guy) the laker you posted Dave... that fish I thought was a Deline netted fish. So, if they're one in the same fish (pic and article) that's cool to now be clarified.

The "sagginess" of the fish... well, my guess is it was either frozen before and thawed, or it spent a little too long in the net or out to rot and soften. I remember getting some arctic char that had been in the net awhile and then frozen, when I thawed it out the skin of the fish looked kinda like that... and the soft flesh saggy and only good for chowder.

GREAT fish. Agreed with Luke... I think they're something like 20 years to 20 inches in those northern climes, and then a 1/2 inch per year on average until reaching max.... not sure though. Some lakers up there do make the 100 year mark. It's absolutely great to see that fish came from Slave. One can only imagine how much of that waterbody never sees anglers.

    Yes, it's Craig.

The picture was taken in the Hay River enr office.

The one netted in Deline is still in the freezer up there last I heard.

  2. Are you waiting for safe ice for lakers, or for the season to open? Cuz I'd like to see summa those too, please

Neither. Wanted to get the pike fishing done and am waiting for the days to get a little longer as it's a further hike to the laker spots. ;)

There are no seasons here to speak of. The road system laker spots are C&R in September and October and a 1 fish limit the rest of the year. All other spots are open year round with different retention limits for Great Slave compared to the rest of the Territory.

  3. Good on ya!!!

I remember back in the day I would hit the river every chance I got.

I particularly remember one frosty February day. Was fishing in -10 temps and standing on an ice shelf in my floater suit and warm boots when the shelf gave way and I ended up in the river!!! :w00t:

I climbed out and continued fishing for about 3 more hours and never had a hit!!!

I also couldn't get the two frozen blocks of ice that used to be my boots off either.

  4. Sounds like a lot of fun buddy and a perfect cardio workout to boot.

Now let's see some big lakers!

That's next on the list Mike. ;)

Another great report Dave. You're going to have to start blurring the backgrounds eh?

Yeah Roy, I wouldn't want all you Southerners invading my fishin' spots would I. :D

  5. Wow!!! What a day!!!

Awesome warm temps and light tropical breezes and super fast action!!!!

I left the house at first light and was set up and fishing about an hour later. Before I could get my jigging line set up I had my first hit on my tip up. After resetting I headed into the hut to continue with my jig stick, I didn't get to far, FLAG!!!

I ran back to my tip up second fish. As I was dropping my bait back down I hit another, and another......... It was 45 minutes from the time I dropped my first line before I managed to get my second line in the water. biggrin.gif

    After 3 hours I had iced 20 pike and lossed/missed a bunch more!!! good.gifgood.gif

I ended up with about 1/2 dozen over 30" with one over 40".

I was fishing solo again today and man that was a lot of work!!! whistling.gif

    I think I need a rum now. wink2.gif

Here's a few pics of the better ones.

  6. sinker i used EZ lube exclusively on hundreds of trailers. its the easiest, highest quality system i came across. it is fairly inexpensive when having the axle built.

lubes both sides of the bearing, which some systems dont. its designed to be overfilled, and some grease just spooges out, kind of like your lower unit.

id pick this system over bearing buddies.

    Yeah, they work great. :good::good:

Puts the grease in between the bearings in stead of trying to force it all through the outer bearing. Does a much better job lubing the inside bearing.

  7. Ha, good guess but no donut for you. Yes I do have a little Linc Mig 100, but it has not been used for about 6 months, I know they can suck up the juice.

I've gone to the website and opened up an account to see my hourly/daily/weekely usage. Funny thing is we are not on Time of Use in my area, but the chart shows it as such, only we still pay the average 7.1¢/kw/h. What I'm still stumped on is the 51kw/h jump on the meter in 24 hours and it doesn't show it on the chart. That meter just might have a bad encounter with a tree branch that's conveniently co-located. I'll keep the peace for now, check the meter daily and see what happens.

Maybe you forgot about that grow-op you started down in the basement. :whistling:

  8. Yer not gettin' enough wheel speed on dat ting.

Ya needs ta throw on a tubro charger and nitrous system.

Could use a free flowing aftemarket exhaust system and a little porting and polishing too. ;)

Then it'll get where ya want to go. :whistling:

  9. Last Tuesday night when it was really cold (-23C or so), I could see that the baseboard in the basement had cycled on a few times. I keep that t-stat set at only 5C or so just to keep the pipes from freezing.

    Jer

It sounds like you could use a little insulation in your basement. :whistling:
