I hate these tip-ups...design is way too busy and prone to icing up in multiple spots, including the huge glob of ice that forms on the line as it bobs up and down, and the reel is just awful. Can't see lures being effective on these, especially those with any sort of weight like a lipless since it would likely just weigh it down.

Clarus's are generally heavy and bulky blanks...I can only imagine how uncomfortable a float rod would be.
Stick with the Okuma until you want to invest in something more upscale.

You will find stocked lakes in the area that seem to be relatively good. Check MNR Fish-on line for stocking information.

Thanks for the info guys. So what would be the best lake right now to go to? If im going to head up I want to make sure I can see people ice fishing cause im not taking any chances right now going out alone. Im still new. If so where also would be the best place to park?
Pick up a map and maybe a stocking list. Small lakes will be more than safe.

3 hours will find you lots of ice...
I've been out every weekend since December 1st...

Love this stuff...Sortilege Maple Whisky licquer from Quebec...Starting seeing it in LCBO's finally this fall.

It's small and wall to wall with cottages, but it gets stocked every year so obviously there will be some little guys around at least

Those Fuji's take surprisingly nice shots...and yes, they really are shock-proof...

Between visiting friends and family and a promising job interview I've managed to put 1500 + km on the truck in the past 4-5 days. Since those in the banana belt seem to be parched of winter, I thought I'd share a few shots of my icecapades over the weekend.
Didn't think I'd need the snowshoes for this little splake lake...I was wrong.
Only one measly troot made it above the ice, but since most of the time was spent on shore so as to avoid getting swept away in the 70 k winds, it was alright.
Spent a few hours chasing pikers and eyeballs on a local lake... The weather was great and we experienced some great flurries of action. There's no ice like early ice...
Everyone loves the sink shot...
Also got to meet OFC member Cosmo, and watch him school the locals with some seriously chunky walters. Good job dood

Next year will include more brookies, and more hilarious shots of trucks getting stuck!!

Haha Jeremy I was thinking the same thing.
Great way to kick off the walleye season

have made oshawa to picton in a hour zero traffic
How much jet fuel did you go through?

Had some very frightening times out there over the years, but also produced a lot of amazing fishing tales and lifelong memories. I believe my first fish was a sheepshead from there.
The whities are a blast when they're on!

Is it not kinda interesting that our board members here who have local knowledge and experience on Nip are the one's who are giving the shortest and most cryptic responses in this thread?
Gee, I wonder why!?

Rainbows have a MUCH better chance of survival when they're not taken out of the water. We ran large cywash hooks and just flipped them off boatside. Never seem a floater doing that but it' almost a guarantee when you net them and let them flop around
-
Errrr... one more thing... if it weren't for the "white-man" buying the walleyes there would be no commrecial fishing.. Go figure that...!
It's amazing how many people around town will talk of Nipissing's poor condition and blame gill-netters, and then go out for a fresh pickerel dinner.
No market = no gill-netters.

I'm sure I'll do something prize-winningly stupid

Walleyes were NEVER native to Lake Nipissing.. but are an introduced species...
Care to elaborate? Blue walleye are not an entirely different species.
And I'd love to donate some of my time this spring to help out with stocking programs.

A small step forward. Still not near enough IMO. I bet the Spoonpullers are are screaming bloody murder. Charter boys would be too but they are mostly in Costa Rica this time of year chasing 2 legged quarry with paper. If only we could train the stream guys there might be some positive results from this conservationist trend.
And you're helping the cause immensely by painting brushstrokes like that...

That's the worst drive I've ever been on...
What's wrong with the drive from Belleville to Oshawa? I've done it a million times and the only time the traffic is even remotely bad is long weekends...
-
I would never drive a car on 8"...

Uh-oh...

I stopped going to the Big Nip YEARS ago...what once was a walleye factory isn't worth going if the total trip was FREE.....
I'm glad you feel that way. Tell all your friends, too...

Trying not to think about them, since they don't open until Feb. 15th here.
