  1. Are you planning on using these minnows to fish with? If so, if you use them in a different body of water I am under the assumption this is illegal. Am I right?

The regs say crayfish can only be used in the waterbody they are harvested from. No such mention for minnows. Besides, if that were the case you'd have to ask the bait shop where they got their minnows, and then only fish that lake....

  2. I don't know what you're fishing for, but I like bigger minnows this time of year.

I'm fishing for walleye. I know they'll take larger minnows in fall, so I don't mind. There's a number of good sized ones, but some look like they'll take my float or Pickerel rig and swim away with it!

You should see the ones I released, they were massive (8-9" pike/muskie minnows).

Anyways I'll find out this weekend if the walleye like 'em or not.

  3. Great info guys, having fish for 20 plus years I know the ups and down.If you don't mind dutch01,I would like to add another question on topic.Do minnows run in the creeks all winter?,or do they go elsewhere.?.I'm getting into this as well.Great thread.Thanks.

    Dave.

I would assume they're in there all winter.

I didn't get the trap yet I went fishing instead (17.5" walleye and a small bass). Will probably get the trap tomorrow.

Work in 4 hours..... This ain't gonna be pretty!

  4. You guys bring up some good points.

The creek is on "my" property in so far as it's an apartment building and I rent here. I will label the trap just to be safe. It's probably too public to leave my minnows in a bucket in the creek though.

I do know that there are Red Sided Dace in this creek, which are endangered. I assume there could be trout or salmon fry in there too. I will release all of these of course. That should leave me with some chubs and suckers. : snicker: (my group of fishing friends refers to a McDonald's Filet of Fish as a "Chub and Sucker Sandwich")

  5. no feeding needed for a few days

my plug in aerator is likely 15 years old and was about $10, can't get a dozen big minnows for $10

Exactly, I'm paying 7.99 a dozen. In fairness to

him though, he gives a huge scoop so it's actually probably 2+ dozen that he gives for each dozen you order. In the end it's still money out of pocket though so I'll get the minnow trap after work tomorrow (if I don't go fishing instead!).. I'll report back how it works out....

    Thanks Chris!

  6. I will mostly use them within a few days of trapping them I would think. I have an aerator for my pail, but I was thinking an aquarium might be a nicer way to keep them. Plus, my aerator is battery powered, aquarium will save me money on batteries over time.

I don't know if I need to feed them, check ph, or use a heating pad etc (all the stuff you'd have to do with regular aquarium fish).

  7. So I was walking along the creek behind my house looking for salmon/trout (none yet), and I noticed a metric crap ton of minnows in there.

I'm going to buy a trap tomorrow and catch some, I'm paying too much $$$ for minnows lately.

I'm wondering if I can keep them in a small aquarium until the weekends roll around. Anyone ever kept minnows in a tank? Any tips or pointers would be appreciated...

  8. The one thing I take away from this thread is there are a bunch of people on here who don't know how to live and let live.

Don't want to carry a gun? Then don't. It shouldn't matter to you if someone else wants to, so long as they meet the legal requirements and are otherwise law abiding. You're not going to change anyone's way of thinking by insulting them and being condescending.

I'm going to go smoke some trees and chill out. Some of you ought to do the same.

  9. People born here, or who have taken the time to become citizens have a right to a different point of view without being told to move to another country. I don't subscribe to the "everyone should carry a gun" movement, but they have a right to their opinion and it's not up to you or me to tell them to get out.

Thanks porkpie, you managed to make my point a little more eloquently than I did....

  10. It sounds like some people really should move to the US where the gun laws are a lot more relaxed (In some states). If living here is that bad, then pack your stuff and move.

I'm not hearing anyone say it's so bad here. I don't know why I should have to leave my country in order to have the right to defend myself, maybe you could shed some light on that thought, perhaps I misunderstood your point....

  11. Better yet, arm all citizens so the criminals don't have their way with us.

    Why the Gun is Civilization

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, thats it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force. The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gangbanger, and a single gay guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that wed be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the muggers potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiatit has no validity when most of a muggers potential marks are armed. People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and thats the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then theres the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones dont constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level. The gun is the only weapon thats as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weightlifter. It simply wouldnt work as well as a force equalizer if it wasnt both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I dont do so because I am looking for a fight, but because Im looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I dont carry it because Im afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesnt limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equationand thats why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

I believe my right to self defense is not granted by the government, rather it is absolute and inalienable. I do not and will not accept the government trying to remove this right. In the end, that may mean I have to be tried by twelve, but at least I won't be being carried by six.

    That's my $0.02

  12. If it's wider than 12ft you will need a wide load permit which is more expensive than usual. Take the tracks off and see if you can get the width down. Check all wide load regulations for the provinces/states it's going through. Also make sure you're not shipping during half-load season which means you're paying double.

Looks like it's pretty light though, meaning you'll pay for a partial load if you get lucky.

I would contact traffictech, brokers I do business with. They're awesome. They can sift through all the Bull for you.

Also consider working through an escrow agency unless you trust the buyer.

Sterling, I work for a Traffic Tech competitor. If you ever want a rate on anything (even just to keep them honest), let me know.

  13. Anybody with experience selling/shipping machinery across the border? I am on the board of a not-for-profit ski association. We have an older Pisten Bully that we are trying to sell. We have a potential buyer in New Hampshire, that wants us to ship it to him at our cost. We have no expertise in this area, consequently no idea about shipping cost, brokerage cost.....Can anyone help: advice, or directions to good advice would be much appreciated.

If you can get me the dimensions of the crate and the weight I can tell you what you should be paying for trucking.

Brokerage gets tricky, to do it legally you need to file a power of attorney and third party waiver in order for someone to clear it on your behalf. I might be able to help you out with that.

Let me know (here or in a PM)

I always thought that they would be an amazing Pike bait but I wouldn't risk using live ones. Now salted ones....

    Cheers,

The Star link has a chart showing goldfish caught while surveying. If I'm reading it right, they caught one in Pickering that was 3.5 pounds! That's a mighty big Goldfish!
