  1. Yesterday I went to Bowmanville to volunteer for the fish lift. Little did I know that it got canceled at the last minute so I drove out there for nothing. The river was packed with fish just south of the dam and there were multiple snaggers around. But what pi$$ed me off was that I saw a relatively young asian man using one of those huge tuna lifting poles (essentially a huge hook attached to a long broom handle) to pierce fish at the side of the river and drag them into his stupid ice cooler. So after running for the cops at happened to just drive by, I came back to my spot and caught him in the act of poaching more innocent salmon out of the river. I confronted him and let the F words fly. He played all dumb ("me no speak English, me sorry") but I had no patience for it. After yelling at him and telling him to get the hell out of the creek or he'll be under arrest I went back to his ice cooler and dumped his entire catch back into river and threw the cooler in the dirt path. He left and didn't come back. I was extremely angry at this dude and had to save myself from kicking his a$$ on the spot.
  2. does anyone know if they'll be doing the lift again tomorrow or the next day? possibly next week too?
  3. well that sucks, im not gonna go buy different tubing for one float
  4. I found a 6.4g Drennan Loafer float in the water today but I dont know how to properly attach it. It has a small place on the bottom of the float for the fishing line to go through, but there isnt a spot on the top of the float. Im use to the redwing tackle floats where you attach the line at the top and the bottom
  5. If trout are supposed to be easily spooked then I'm wondering why bright colours like the go to pink worm work so well. There is nothing natural about such coloured baits. So would it be better to stick to natural colours like olive green flies or plain roe bags?
  6. i didnt know reeling when a fish is pulling drag would do that to your line. Never happened before with all the pike ive gotten. I thought that the reeling mechanism just doesn't engage (i.e. even if you are trying to reel in) when the fish is pulling drag
  7. 12 lb suffix mono main line, 8.8 lb redwing tackle floro
  8. So I've gone salmon fishing a few times this year and my set up so far has been a 9'6" fenwick GT med power rod with a 4000 shimano sienna reel. But i havent been able to get that much control over my drift and saw that other guys with centerpin reels seemed to have much quicker hook sets and control. So today I decided to go with my girlfriend to pick up a rapala intro centerpin (it will be an early bday gift for me). But the salesman at Lebaron was trying really hard to convince me not to get a centerpin. He said centerpins are antiques and that a spinning reel will provide just as much control over the drift and will have a great drag for reeling them in. He didn't suggest a centerpin for any type of fish. So did i go wrong in getting a centerpin? one of the main issues i was also hoping to fix with this center pin was the crazy line twist/memory i get right after fighting a fish. the main line (12lb mono) twists into a big mess and I always have to cut my line and set it up again after every fish.
  9. Ive been waiting for the longest time for them to come to toronto
  10. Who ever said anything about salmon sir? you seem to be making a lot of assumptions there. I merely asked where are the closest fish cleaning stations
  11. That's a good idea, but I live in a small downtown toronto condo so there isn't any real room to even clean a fish on the tiny kitchen counter. So i take it that port hope and port credit are the only close by cleaning stations?
  12. please stop posting in my thread if you're going to drag this off topic into a race argument. I'm interested in the location of cleaning stations for the simple reason that I want to know where I can easily clean fish without having to mess up my kitchen. I don't have a tailgate and am not interested in looking for roe.
  13. can someone please give me a list of the various fish cleaning stations around southern ontario / GTA area. the only one I know about is the port credit cleaning station.
  14. i found out during my last outing that 6lb is way too light. 2 salmon broke me off.
  15. are you supposed to use a lighter to melt the netting? doesn't that make the roe bag smell like burnt plastic?
  16. you guys tie it all in one night? that's like 300 roe bags
  17. So I tried curing roe for the first time using the salt / brown sugar recipe. I tied some roe bags and put them in the freezer but the bags are still fairly soft and havent frozen at all. Aren't they suppose to freeze over in the freezer? my chicken breasts are like frozen bricks
  18. what size floats do you use for big skeins like that?
  19. damn, then I guess I'll just have to keep trying until I can get some fresh roe.
  20. ok guys, so I have a follow up question. Firstly, I ended up getting some pre-tied roe bags from lebaron for $5. Me and my dad used them this morning and were able to hook 4 salmon (they all got off). Not bad since this was my dad's first time ever river fishing. Now my question is whether special ordered roe like the one from www.fishheadscanada.net is significantly better than fresh roe caught yourself. I was talking to a guy by the river today and he was telling me that in his opinion the roe he orders is much better so that's all he uses. I also noticed that not many people today were using roe bags for salmon. some had streamer flies while others had egg imitations. So is roe really that good for salmon fishing.
  21. that video was definitely not flossing... throwing a rapala off a pier into open water is fair game. But please do translate the video!
  22. a big bell sinker and jumbo treble and you're all set!
