  1. This is also the case in Canada...since the Walkerton tragedy, municipal water supplies are stringently regulated and monitored. The same cannot necessarily be said about bottled water.
  2. I use this method for uncured loose Trout roe and I use the Playtex milk bags (as Craig suggested) and I can attest to how well it works. Freezing the roe in water eliminates any chance freezer burn and the eggs will remain perfectly fresh for years. You just have to top up with water occasionally as the ice will sublimate in the freezer over time.
  3. Awesome photo essay bud...I'm glad that I was able to hitch my wagon to at least one of those adventures.
  4. Don't kick the guy while he's down Mikey!!!! Shake it off Bill...better days ahead!!!
  5. Sometimes it pays to take a well-timed day off...this was one of them!
  6. Great day boys - I thoroughly enjoyed that!!! Here's another taste. Unfortunately for us, most of the bigger fish won the battles today!
  7. Very nice guys, it was killing me not to be able to join in for at least one day. That said, I look forward to contributing to the next report on Wednesday!!!
  8. Trust me it works...doesn't matter what kind of float reel and you don't even need to engage the clicker. I always grumbled about the lousy clicker on my Islander...a moot point now!
  9. Nice going to get fish in these tough conditions. Similar to Stonefly, I didn't bother this weekend either. I notice that a lot of guys use hair elastics etc for reels with weak clickers so I thought I'd post this little tip which works for all reels - say goodbye to those elastics. Thanks to Treeman from floatfishing.net for posting this originally. Simply place your hook in the hook keeper and pull the line around the back of the reel. Simply give the reel a bit of a turn and it will stay tight, without even engaging the clicker!
  10. Nice ones! If you think that your leash is short now, wait until kids come along!!!
  11. Again, congrats on your first fish! Fall spawners are relatively common and are usually stocked fish which originated in a NY hatchery where they manipulate the photoperiod in order to induce fall spawning characteristics so that eggs may be taken in the fall. Based on the appearance of your fish's dorsal fin which is somewhat deformed (a common trait of hatchery fish due to crowding in the rearing pens) it's probably safe to assume that fish came from one of these NY hatcheries.
  12. Very nice Al - I always love seeing your pictures of those magnificent fish!
  13. I was really hoping that it was going to be your day! As already mentioned, keep putting in the time and you'll connect.
  14. "Save me some of those sweet & power chicken thingys"
  15. Yep, but rest assured that she was sent safely on her way after a photo or two.
  16. It sure is! Even better as we virtually had the place to ourselves...not bad for a weekend. Joe held his own. The first fish and the Coho were landed by him.
  17. With a little one at home, my Steelheading days are pretty limited at present. I had a rare full day "free pass" on the weekend and wanted to make the best of it. With the recent relative lack of rain, options in the province were very limited and the few rivers with decent flow and numbers of fish are very, very busy as the word is out. Last week saw some very localized but significant showers and on a hunch and after some confirmation from a trusted fellow Steelhead addict, we set our sights on one of my all-time favourite destinations. Sometimes fate smiles upon you and I was over the moon to arrive to find perfect "Steelhead Green" conditions and virtually no other anglers. Here's just a few highlights: So nice, I had to show her twice! A real treat - a relatively rare wild non-Lake O Coho:
  18. Not that I'm aware of but you could ask at shops that sell them for alternatives to shipping back to Islander. That said, is it really something that is so pressing that can't wait until the off-season? Given that your bearings are only two years old, I'm sure they still work just fine.
  19. Islander bearings are press fit and as such, Islander strongly recommends that the reel be returned to the point of sale so that the reel can be returned to them and they'll swap out the old bearings for the upgrades (to ensure that it's done properly and no damage occurs).
  20. I'm aware of that fact and didn't make any statement in my post to that effect. My comment was in reference to migratory or potamodromous Rainbow Trout, not resident stream fish or lake-locked individuals.
  21. There is ample evidence that stocking can have deleterious effects on existing wild populations, even when fish are taken from the same watershed. A 1 fish limit with a minimum size would allow most systems to reach their carrying capacity of wild fish while still allowing for the harvest of fish and does not require time and money to maintain a stocking program. That said, I personally would like to see increased stocking programs for rivers which do not support significant natural reproduction (such as the Humber etc).
