  1. Anytime you can take new guys out fishing and catch what your looking for is a good time in my books. :) Funny thing about that pic is he didn't know they were there, he screamed like a girl when it kissed his ear. lol

  2. Well, I ended up doing the walleye opener a bit different than normal. A couple from work who had never gone fishing or camping before wanted to go fishing so I invited them up with me and my GF for a weekend camping trip. I still hit the same lake and although I wasnt too impressed with the campground it was clean and we had lots of room. Anyway... The first day was Saturday blue bird skies and Hot. Not a breath of air. Water was 62 degrees, a bit warmer than normal. We tried our usualy spot for a few hours first thing and nothing, not even a rock bass. Moved to our secondary spot and I hit one. a good sized eater. An hour later and I hit another, and hour later one more, an hour later and another. The others were getting a bit frustrated, but what can you do. I had my limit... even lent a few for a picture...

We were all hot so we headed back to the camp to setup and have dinner.

A bit of a butcher job but they got the job done.

We enjoy a couple nice meals of walleye on day one.

The next day I hit one more in the morning, but they got skunked. :( We did have another little walleye lunch for us. We went back out after lunch and the girl we brought up hit her first... a 4 inch rock bass. Boy was she happy.

Anyway, they left around dinner and we camped another night and fished a few hours monday with no luck... Traffic was really light so the drive was good.

The sun was up high with no clouds and I think the fish just moved deeper than we were prepared to fish.

I caught all of my fish on a drop shot with a white mister twister. We were fishing in about 5-25 fow, along rocky edges, drop offs and humps. The key seemed to be a very subtle presentation and a quick trigger finger to set the hook. White was the color of the weekend. I was using a G Loomis GL2 Medium action drop shot rod with 20 pound green power pro, a circle hook and a drop shot weight.

  3. I have a 55 pound Minkota maxxum, on my 16 foot Lund, with decks and a 30 Yamaha 2 stroke. and it pulls my boat around perfectly. Highest speed is way faster than I ever need in pretty much any water or current. I can fish a full day Bass fishing on a single car quest deep cycle battery. I lasted all long weekend walleye fishing on a single battery charge. However I wasn't on the battery all day, but I did use it a fair bit. Get the biggest battery you can afford i fyou are going to run a single battery and you will last a full day fishing.

  4. Aikman's in Mississauga used to do replacements no questions asked but they were told not to anymore. He said that some shops will do it but they are under no obligation to do so. The only sure bet is to hit the Peterborough head office and its hit and miss if they will replace it. I know some guys that have had no issues, and other that have had lots of issues. I really liked the feel of that compre for drop shoting. I keep staring at it wishing I could get it replaced. maybe I'll try again in Peterborough and see what happens. I rarely get out there during the week though.

Dito on the go back to the store you got it from if you still have the receipt. I rarely buy anything from bass pro big ticket that may need warranty work because I know what there service is like. I like to buy my stuff from JB's. He has always been good to me and I have no complaints about that store other than I wish they sold more Bass Rod's, but I get that he specializes more in Musky and big water rigger type stuff. I can normally find what I am looking for there though.

  5. The days of replacement no questions asked onshimano rods is long over. I have a compre I broke while fishing about 6 inches from the end and they say its not covered. I also broke a vrod last year and they didn't replace that either. Netiher got fixed and both are still sitting here. I figure the Compre I'll eventually buy an end guide on it, but I just haven't got around to it. I have not bought a single shimano product since. Bought a few other reels of different mfg's and a few rods as well. Mostly St.Croix and Ardent. I did buy a G.Loomis GL2 though.

  6. So here is the questions. where does this stand for you on the all time greatest list of comic genre movies...

Superman, Dark Knight, Avengers, Xmen etc... I would have to say even though the IMDB ratings for Dark Knight are higher I enjoyed Avengers much more. I just couldn't take the funny voice for batman. The orginal superman movies had an awe about them though...

  7. I don't use swivels and I don't suffer from any of the line twist issues people mention. My main drop shot rod is a Gloomis GL2 spinning rod with a stradic and 20 pound braided line, no floro. Improvec cinch knot line fed top of the hook down tied, with a 1-2 foot tag end, fed back through the eye of the hook.

Super sensitive, great for walleye, bass, perch, crappie etc... for ice fishing it also works well. when dead sticked with a tail hooked minnow.

I tend not to be so snooty though. I call it sinker and a hook instead of drop shoting. This is alternative to the hook and sinker method.

I like spining rod setup over a baitcasting setup as I just like the feel or a spinning rod better when the tip is held close to the water. With the reel on the bottom of the rod versus on top it just feel better imo.

Plus if you are using some really light weights and lures its easy to cast without any fuss. I find baitcasters are good when cating constantly. with a drop shot I'll cast and let it sit for a long time in one spot or slightly dragging. Fewer casts means spinning gear in my world....

  8. I have some expensive and some cheap ones, but being a crankbait rod I like the flex I get from my St.Croix Mojo Bass Crankbait rod. Plenty supple enough to allow me to use braid without ripping the hooks out. And its pretty cheap. The TC4 shimano rods also make good crankbait rods.

  9. For 5k, I doubt he is gonna find a boat with a working hour meter. once yuo get into the sunny states further down they will have more hours on them than a comperable boat up here. Just something to look out for. If I was buying a boat I would certainly be doing it in the states though. check the boattrader.com site. It will give you a rough idea of what you can find...

    Here are a few examples...

  10. What about solo up there in the bush, think he knows about this?

I don't think algonquin is part of the fireban, from the links I see the fireban doesn't start until north of the park. Has anyone confirmed this to be the case, some people were saying they heard of the fireban starting at barrie.

  11. Don't forget in the states there fishing season isn't 6 months long... There boats run all year... Don't mislead the guy usage. You will use less gas if you don't flog it around obviously. But at half throttle cruising all day in a bass boat with a likely 15 year old or more motor in the 115-150 r range versus a 16 foot tin boat with a 30 or 40 hp motor the gas price jump is pretty stagering. I spend all summer in both and there is a reason I prefish in a tin boat and not a bass boat. And its not for the fun of it. Also towing costs are significantly higher with a heavier boat. Anyway, he is gonna get a bass boat cause that's what he wants and that's what he should get. Its just an fyi that really likely doesn't need to be said, a bass boat eats mor gas than a lot of other boats out there. :)

  12. A bass boat is a fairly effecient hull design, however the motor sizes and weight of the drivers arm will burn a hell of a lot more gas than most boats other than a big cabin cruiser. My 18 foot bowerider with a mercruiser was way better on gas than the bass boats I had. As is my 16 foot llund with a 30. So if you hae 5k to put into a boat most other boats will save you on the pump.

  13. Bass boats are money pits. The gas is terrible compared to other styles of boat out there. For 4000-6500 you are gonna be in tough to find one with a recently newish motor. I know a guy selling a nice one for 8k though if your interested shoot me a pm I'll pass on his info.
