bluesky1713 Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 Just wondering if anyone knows how to put on a new counter spring on a Big Jon Sportsman downrigger. Mine snapped recently and I ordered a new one and want to put it on myself. I know I have too take off the reel assembly but there is a metal pin that is stopping it from coming off. Anyone know how the right way to put a new counter spring on? Thanks in advance! Josh
NANUK Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 The metal pin just slides out, might be a few years since some one took that pin out so it might need a gentle tap or two, after the pin is out just slide the spool off, install new spring, make sure the spring does not get caught in between the spool and rigger body and the pin is back in the clutch groove when you put everything back togather.
bluesky1713 Posted May 23, 2010 Author Report Posted May 23, 2010 Still struggling with getting that pin out. I have it push into the hole but aren't able to get it much further. There isn't much space to work with a hammer or anything to give it any force...
Nebby Posted May 25, 2010 Report Posted May 25, 2010 I just put the spring together around the downrigger gear. One end of the spring is tapered and that just screws into the other end. Then just pull it over the the counter gear.
