Do I need numbers for my boat?

iam new to the board(lurker) iam getting my 14ft'r ready and my friend said ill need to register it? i have an older yamaha 8hp for it, so my question is it true? and how do i go about doing this if needed? ....thanks

under 10 hp you are good to go without numbers
