3rd time was the charm for me (video and pics)

There is only so much you can lecture... -
I have been hitting AP since my last year at high school in 95 and have gone at least twice a year every year. It never gets old. I had always been going exterior but this year, just this past long weekend, I went IN. And both my love and respect has grown that much more. Happy Birthday AP. I have some wild AP stories but will post later in the thread.

Absolutely ... you start small and work your way up ... I am still at the small stage when it comes to rivers and creeks ... It will be interesting to watch mine and your progress this summer .... Like I said I have a river mission this summer ...

Man ... those were sweet specks especially that last one. Feisty little buggers. Nice vids there Brad. Ok ok I get it ... 8k uphill? that's pretty awesome and I know I shouldn't be mentioning about my 1.5k uphill last weekend but I swear we were hauling close to xxx pounds on our backs. We even threw in a 4 person tent in the canoe which we were carrying holding down. It was tough because it was silly of us not to do two trips. Lessons learned. As soon as I saw that lake, all my pain was gone. It was just bliss. That was a gorgeous lake Brad. Ciao Miro

Those are nice little brookies. I am also on the hunt to find some creeks/streams around my area that house these babies.

No but seriously I try to discourage others myself. I once read it takes over 10 years for one cigg butt to biodegrade into soil. Yikes! -

Re: throwing smokes out the window, I try not to, I used too but not much anymore. I try to keep my friends from doing the same. -
Last summer while camping at Tea Lake and while swimming in the beach area, I saw a dark fish very close by, I found it was a lake trout. Then after doing further research I ran into Brook Trout and found out how it is one of the most sought after fish. Long story short, the chase was ON. My first try: Closing day 2011 I hit some stocked lakes but failed. My 2nd try: Season opener 2012, slept in -11 degree nights but failed. My 3rd try: This past May 24 long weekend I hit AP again. This time I went backcountry after numerous people told me "you want Brookies, you gotta put the work into it" Having never done backcountry and not having all the "right" equipment (compact this and foldable that) I just packed up my regular exterior camping supplies into a 60L backpack and so did my buddy. We entered AP through the west side. About 5k paddle into a 1.5k straight uphill portage. I know 1.5k is not too much but with those kinds of backpacks and the fact that my novice buddy was adamant that we should do it one trip, we decided to wear our backpacks and carry the canoe at the same time. What a mistake that was. Anyhow, we reached one of the most beautiful elevated lakes I had ever seen. Set up camp quickly as daylight was running out. We paddled and hit another portage into another lake which was at even higher elevation. We probably had only about two hours of daylight left. First 1 hour nothing and then my buddy wanted to get back to camp. I said NO WAY ... I gotta get this monkey off my back and decided to continue fishing. As soon as I said that ... Bam!!! got one... (you will see it in the video) Then I was getting ready for my next cast and my line was straight down in the water just 5 or 6 feet under the canoe, I was looking down to see the depth of water, and I could not BELIEVE MY EYES. There were two brookies (a small one and a big one) circling my BlackFury spinner with a piece of worm on it. Told my buddy to shhhhhhhhhhhh ... I started jigging just a tad bit. And that's when the big bad boy just pounced on it. And I had my second brookie. Two Brookies back to back! I was a happy man. When I held the bigger fish I had a moment of awe and wonder. Such a beautiful fish and a streamlined body. I know it sounds silly but I felt like it was telling me "Ok now you have seen me, now let me go" .... And I almost wanted to but then again I had worked too hard for this. I had to taste him. The next day our worms had gone bad, we had left it exposed under the sun. We only got one little guy maybe 14 inches. I will let the video do the rest of the talking. Enjoy and thanks to all of you guys who helped me with getting ready for backcountry and a shout out to a fellow OFC'er who put me on this lake. Good on you buddy for giving it a try. It is loads of fun. You asked about spelling - its NYMPH. Yes, you definitely need a tapered leader and then maybe only 2 feet of tippet (in most cases). So true, it becomes 2nd nature to check behind you before you cast.... lol. And yes, do learn to Roll Cast, a MUST KNOW cast. Generally, to avoid the splashing of your line after you have made the final cast, and before your line completely hits the water, slowly lower your rod, that usually helps reduce the splash. I'll be hitting a river myself today with my fly rod. Miro

I agree with Drifter. I attach my main line to the leader using two perfection loops. But when you join the loops together be careful there is the right way and the wrong way. See this video Miro

What's your Must Have Checklist When in Bush
mirogak replied to mirogak's topic in General Discussion
Nope ... but saw lots of different kinds of droppings all around our site and on the portage to "this" lake. And you know what, after a couple of hours into the camp, we stop being conscious of bears or any danger. We fit right in. -

Sitting in my office with a grin on my face, I can't believe that less than 18 hours ago I was in Algonquin back country. Just wanted to close this thread - thank you all for your input. While most things that I took came in handy, but some of the most useful things that I would not have thought of but did due to your input were: - bug net ... My God ... did I need that or what. - Nalgene - Water purification tablets ... - canned fish .... which I brought back - spork Thx Brad. I actually found something at MEC which I call a "Sporkife" ... you can imagine why - zip lock bags - stringer Miro -
Thx for the education. Love what you do. Keep it up.

Don't know how I missed this report but wow you can find that size brookies in SWO streams? ... sweet!

Just wondering if I should take raw eggs or boiled eggs with me. I love eggs and breakfast is not complete without them. Thx.

That's exactly what I told my wife just now.
