Which Rod for Which Application
Dontcryformejanhrdina replied to mercman's topic in General Discussion
Wouldn't longer rods make figure 8's easier? Certainly takes strain off your lower back. I like casting rods to be as long as possible. I have a 7'6" jerkbait rod and I had an 8' MH for everything else but found it was too weak throwing big soft plastics so I picked up a 9' extra heavy and it adds distance to my casts and I feel I can really load up on it more with heavy baits. -
That's one funny looking perch-suprise

Says the guy that lives right by the St. Lawrence...... That's awesome, it's always great to catch a surprise. Especially when it's as tasty as trout! -
That looks awesome, thanks! Definetely gotta give it a try more this year, especially with all the weeds in the waters I fish.
-
I have a few of them but have only used them a few times. Do you put a soft plastic on it too?

I never realised you trolled for walleye rod in hand. That's how I got my first lakers this year too, it's great being able to feel the hit. Did you use that same technique when you fished Quinte? I'm gonna have to pick your brain about trolling walleye before fall, what rods/lures/line to use, how fast, how far back, etc...

I know plenty of people who like to jig for walleye because they taste great and they can just sit back and relax for a few hours. Others like to troll because it's a nice slow cruise around the lake WHILE catching fish, bass fishing is appealing because of the almost constant action at times. What is your go to technique/species that you target, and why do you like it more than anything else? Casting for musky is what I love most. I like moving around and throwing baits more than jigging/trolling. I guess it's a combination of the chase, the difficulty in finding the fish and the sudden strike that can come out of nowhere after hours of nothing. Plus I'm not a patient person so being able to overpower a fish with a tight drag and get it in the net as quickly as possible appeals to me.

Good luck trying not to spend money while getting into musky fishing haha. I agree with fishgreg, buy a good reel even if it's an extra $100 if you can fit it in your budget. Or wait a bit, go fishing with somebody who fishes musky and has extra gear you can use to make sure you like it because it's a very expensive hobby.

Kiwanis Walleye Tournament

I was out there again this morning for about 5 hours and only got 1 perch, I thought Sat was slow! Today was brutal, just soft little nibbles (when there was anything at all) and only 1 fish caught. It was really nice out there today though, gorgeous day. -
Spinnerbaits are great, especially when you want to work a weedbed.

I would like to ask a question

I caught it right out in front of the docks, my buddy trolled back while I unhooked it (in a net over the side of the boat, as you can see my net still over the side of the boat and not in it) since the people at the cottages wanted to see it. It was released. People can think whatever they want, doesn't make it true. -

I also know of an oldtimer (who isn't "ethnic") that used to take a pistol with him and shoot muskies in the head whenever he caught one just because they eat other fish he wants to catch. Ignorence doesn't discriminate, it's for everyone! -

Seriously, the guy cast over your line trying to snag your fish? Hahaha that's all kinds of pathetic. There's idiots and jerks of any ethnic group. -

What's a "normal" spring day for Quinte walleye? -
Walleye. There will be plenty of time to catch incidental pike once musky opens up.

That makes me feel better about only getting 1 in the boat. I only saw 1 other boat catch a fish though I tried to stay away from the crowds. -
Pike Opener. Question on Handwear

My uncle is one of the toughest guys I know and he wears gloves the odd time releasing snapping turtles. Maybe because he grabs them behind the head so he can get the hook out lol. -
Kiwanis Walleye Tournament
Dontcryformejanhrdina replied to Mike the Pike's topic in General Discussion
Was out with my brother for about 6 hours this morning. Caught quite a few little perch but my brother caught the only walleye which was a little over 17.5". Had a tough time locating any active fish at first, also didn't realize how shallow the Bay is in general (I launched and fished around Belleville). The boat traffic wasn't half as bad as I was expecting. Going back there Monday, gotta put some time in and learn the area, it can be a bit overwhelming at first. I was going to try a bit for pike but I couldn't find any healthy weed beds to work, at least nothing substantial. -
A guy I work with has a huge camping trailor, I think he said it weighs 6000lbs after he loads it up with their camping gear and he was towing that with a minivan. Then he was surprised that his van was finished after a few years. Nice to see some people actually care about finding out the towing capacity BEFORE they buy lol.

Unidentified species (pic)

I've caught those in Paudash and Centre Lake around Bancroft. They seem to fight pretty well for their size, Not sure what they are though.
