  1. Clubs are a great place to learn whether it is for walleye, musky, bass or trout/salmon. There are no clubs(bass) here in SW Ont(Windsor) but I have done a number of seminars in Michigan for walleye and trout. I am amazed at the size and the involvement these people have dedicated to their respective organizations. Some of the clubs exceed 400 members.. WOW!! Now you know when politicians try to pull something over there(USA)these groups get involved and have their say before it becomes a law. Many updates on stocking programs and always youth activities to teach them right. Good luck with your search for a club, I know you will enjoy it and learn.
  2. Great seaosn Pete. I would suggest LSC for that 50" it is probably the best chance with numbers too. Casting and jigging is just starting to pick up again as the water temps drop.
  3. Another good coating is Shore Lunch. Not sure who carries it here in Ont but only $2.99 a box in the USA. http://www.shorelunch.com/
  4. I usually check with Lake Vision and then complain that is should be called "LIAR VISION"..(they only called for 1-2 ft waves) lol

  6. As we approach the Labour Day wknd it not only signals the end of summer but also open water steelhead fishing in the western basin (Wheatley-Erieau). These fish will soon be headed back to the OH and PA waters where they were raised. The season has been a good one with stable weather and lots of chrome to be caught and some big ones too. I have a great time with these fish as I think they are the best fighting with high flying, line stripping action. The action for me will change to more musky fishing, casting and jigging on the Detroit River and walleye fishing on Lake Erie. I will also be fishing the Bay of Quinte for about 10 days this fall for a fall trophy hunt. I hope everyone has had a safe and enjoyable summer, but the fishing season is not over yet!
  7. Go fish when you can. If you are waiting for the perfect day it probably won't happen. Be safe and enjoy the time you have. I was out today and once we found the walleyes we had our 12 in 45 minutes.
  8. Everyone needs this one !!
  9. Yes many of the shows are info-mercials, suck and the costs involved are huge. Most guys who are competitive anglers or very avid anglers don't watch fishing shows, they will go out on the water and learn on their own. I have always respected the Lindners for their knowledge and cutting edge ideas. I know how the biz works and this does not diminish my view of the Lindners, they are men of integrity.
  10. I have been fishing Wheatley more than Leamington lately and know where the fish are in that area. The ramp in Wheatley is good, to get there exit at Tilbury and take Queen St south which becomes Erie St to Concession Rd 4 turn right and turn at your first left(Cavendish Foods) you will see the signs to the marina. Alpha- the bite in Wheatley goes til almost labour day. If you come after that Erieau is the better port but you may have to travel off shore a few miles as most of the steelies will be headed back to Ohio and Pennsylvania.
  11. The summer bite is on full stride with good catches at both ports. Erieau is doing better on the steelhead but limits of walleyes are coming out of Wheatley. For those fishing walleyes in Wheatley, crawler harnesses with gold, purple or silver blades have been doing best. Torpedo Divers(Shark) off inline boards back 100, 40 jets and dipseys back 60-80 feet over 55-60 fow of water about 6 miles from the marina. For those targetting steelhead a few bonus walleyes have been in the mix using spoons on riggers or dipseys. Riggers down 25-40 and dipseys back 80-120 over 55-60 fow. Erieau steelhead has been hot with riggers, jets and dipseys all taking a good number of fish. Try running dipseys and jet 80-120 back over 60-70 fow and your riggers down 30-40. Spoons have been working well and those with copper back and orange on the front have been working well. You will pick up a few bonus walleyes in your catch. Check in at Erieau Pro Tackle before heading out for daily reports 519 676 8600.
  12. Leamington is a great port to fish and visit. Walleye fishing has been very good lately but it is a lot of water to cover for someone new to the area. Not sure where you are coming from but exit HWY #77 Leamington Exit head south all the way to Robson Road turn left(east) and you will find the marina located about 1/4 of a mile. Wheatley is another great location at this time for perch, walleye and rainbow trout. Fishing has been very goo there too with a short trip out on Lake Erie about 5-7 miles and you are in walleye and bow fishing country. Perch fishing has been very good close to shore. http://www.leamington.ca/visitors/marina.asp Wheatley fishing reports: http://www.swoc.ca/forums/index.php
  13. Here is a pic of a PIC 15.1 lbs caught by my team mate Ross Robertson of Big Water Fishing Pro Team. You can find more at http://www.bigwaterfishing.com/pro_team.php This was caught in the western basin of Lake Erie. The troll bite is starting to heat up so if you are looking to book a trip I suggest you contact a guide soon as many will already have their wknds spoken for.
  14. Greg knows the Kawarthas very well. 3 hrs you can be in Windsor and fish the best walleye waters with no slot size and a 6 fish limit. Walleye season is open and the catch and release season of Michigan bass opened on the wknd.
  15. Thanks for asking: Walleye are open yr round on the Detroit River. While most areas of Ontario are still waiting for ice to melt and the season to open we are fishing. The muskie was caught and released with no issue as were the smallies and we were not targetting them with 1/2-5/8oz jigs. During the early season you will catch a number of different species as Darrell mentioned in his post.
  16. Darrell, thanks for making the trip down south. I am glad I could put you both on some walleyes and big ones at that. As I said at the first spot we needed to find some new water to get into some big fish, thankfully I work with a good group of friends. Ashley is definately a keeper and I am glad she enjoys her time with you. She released the big walleye to fight another day. Congrats on the new baby as my youngest just turn 20 today..lol Thanks again and I look forward to sharing the boat with you again, enjoy the walleye fillets.
  17. Aaron here is a decent musky caught while jigging this yr. Jigging has become a regular way to catch muskies on the D-R and other locations because we have caught a number this way and learned that just use bigger baits to jig. Professional bass angler Jon Bondy made his own musky jigging bait(Bobdy Bait) and I was using a 1.5oz salt water jig and a 6" sassy shad to attrac fish. Jigging usually happens in the early season and in the fall. Almost like getting snagged and then the musky takes off..wow.
  18. Aaron, during the early spring walleye run there are a number of muskies caught both small and large. In 2006 when the VHS virus hit we lost a LOT of muskies, fortunately the ones that survived were able to have successful spawns. As many know there were a number of 40# muskies caught last yr. Prior to 2009 I have not heard of a reliable 40# muskie being caught and that goes for yrs of records from the Mich Ont Musky Club. We fished the Mich Walleye tournament on that Sat with good results and finished 8th with just shy of 52# for our 10 walleyes. Between Sat and Sun we boated about 30 walleyes, Sat was better for us 18 walleyes. The musky fishing during the opener can be good. Water temperature will determine where they are. Casting, jigging and trolling for muskies can all be productive in the river. Let me know if you need more info.
  19. I have been fishing from Peche to Fighting Is with good success in all the regular spots. Don't let those freighters docked worry you about catching fish. Salt and grain dropping from those conveyors just mean more baitfish and that spells more walleyes. The east side has been good due to the water clarity. We have had very few days this yr of N or E winds and hopefully this will result in another excellent spawn like the one from 2003. Strong winds stir up the eggs making it tough on the spawn process. I have not seen the wind mills and not sure if they are on land or in the water. If in the water it will make for some bass habitat but I am not sure I want to be that close with the blades moving..lol
  20. We actually shot that show back in 2003.. wow. Funny story about that day was the our cameraman Dave being surrounded by the police when 911 calls said "there is a guy who has a rocket launcher pointed at the GM building in Detroit." Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you.
  21. I have filmed Detroit Rivers shows with Pete Bowman of Fishn Canada and EATV. Also a Lake Erie walleye trolling with Bob Izumi. There are some new episodes that will be aired in 2011 with a few different fishing shows as well.
  22. The D-R has been giving up good numbers of walleyes for those looking for an early season bite while the rest of Ont is closed. Jiggers have been doing well on the Ont side as we have not had many days this yr of N or E winds. The usual spots have been producing with chartruese jigs tipped with a plastic minnow or worm has been doing the trick. For those new to the river arm yourself with a dozen 1/2-3/4oz jigs in various colours and some plastic worms or minnows. Look for the boats and the nets going over. Lake Erie trolling will be heating up shortly with action from Colchester to Leamington. Most anglers will troll crawler harnesses or crankbaits like Reef Runners or Rapalas to cover the large areas to find active fish.
  23. Happy Easter, What a great wknd of fishing this has been. The Ont side of the D-R cleaned up very nicely and the fish were smacking. Good catches all down the Ont side from Peche Island to Fighting Island. Lots of big fish too. We boated several over 8lbs that were quickly released. Despite being a bit windy on Sat the fishing continued to be hot. A small cold front has now hit the area but winds have slowed and the fishing will continue to be good as the water warms. We are expected to have rain the next few says but that will not slow the bite. Although it is going to rain the weather will be stable and temps remain the same for the coming week. I am looking forward to fishing with 2 good friends from Arkansas on Tues Jimmy and Troy Cox, they are the owners of Mizmo plastics.
  24. The warm weather has turned the walleye fishing on. Earlier this wk (Mon) the DR was filled with ice that was flushed out of the St.Clair River by ice breakers. The warm temps have also brought S winds which helps clean the Ont side for those who don't have a Michigan license you will have fishable waters this wknd. Look for the boats and there is a good chance you will find out shortly if the walleyes are biting. Keep your line vertical and slow as water temps are only 40-43 degrees. A good selection of 1/2oz to 3/4 oz jigs in a various colours will keep you armed. Chartruese blends seem to be the preferred colour of many anglers. Live bait is not necessary but won't hurt, many run a number of plastic worm and minnow imitations with great success. Happy Easter and have a great long wknd,
  25. Darrell, I would leave the riggers at home unless you want to hit some great steelie action out of Wheatley of Erieau. Most guys run 30# mono for muskies with big boards. You will be in a good area for muskies, from Belle River to the Thames is good at that time of year. Walleye fishing can be hit and miss, but at that time of year I am fishing 10-12 fow off Pike Creek. That would be about a 15 mile ride from the Thames. Crawler harnesses work well, it can be weedy and you will have to work to catch some fish. Good luck and enjoy your vacation.
