Well, I went down to the base of the Scarborough Bluffs this morning to try practice casting a little.... it was crazy beautiful, with big salmon and trout jumping out of the water all around me.... Not that *I* got a bite, of course. I also learned that I need to get some new boots. Apparently rubber boots with no tread on the bottom can be pretty darn slippery on wet, algae covered rocks! I did have a nice swim though. Anything special I need to do to the reel that got dunked in the water? Just let it dry out, and put some oil in the port in the side? ?

Might have been me. I do remember selling a pair to a guy who said he was really into fishing!

Yeah, I keg my beer, and my brew kettle is 130 litres. Don't ask... We all get carried away with our hobbies! Sooo.... how many guys will show up for the BOQ GTG?

Can anyone join in on this? Or is it one of those "gold membership" things ? I'm a noob, just wondering what the deal is... Anyhow, I don't have a boat, but I make my own beer, and it's pretty darn good! Cheers

I sent you a message asking if there's any advice on where to fish on the Island... I haven't a clue where to start! Any advice is more than welcome, I'm pretty new at this! Cheers

I posted here a while ago about looking for books to help me learn to clean fish. I've been reading some great books from the library, Including this one.... Cleaning and Preparing Gamefish: Step-by-Step Instructions, from Water to Table by Monte Burch http://openlibrary.org/works/OL3474855W/Cleaning_and_Preparing_Gamefish I had to work this weekend, no fishing for me. I'm hoping to take a morning off mid-week, and find a spot to fish from shore somewhere. Anyhow, I thought I should practice what I've been reading, and local Scarberia supermarket Fu Yao had fresh Red Snapper for $2.48/lb so we grabbed several and I went to town with my fillet knife in the backyard... I think I did a pretty good job, starting to have some experience, my comfort level with the knife is getting there... and this is the recipe (from the book above) we tried, quite delicious! Wine Poached Fillets 1lb fish fillets, mild and white-meated fish Italian Dressing Dash Tabasco sauce 1 cup white wine 1/4 cup water lemon pepper garlic salt Cornstarch Add Tabasco to the Italian dressing to taste and brush on the fish fillets. Allow to marinate for at least 30 minutes. Sprinkle the fillets with garlic salt and lemon pepper. Place the fillets in a large skillet, pour the wine and water around the fillets and poach for approx 5-15 minutes depending on the thickness of the fillets or until fish flakes easily. Carefully remove the fillets to a warm platter. "Reduce" the liquid in the skillet, then stir a little cornstarch into the skillet, and cook until thickened. Spread this sauce over the skillets and serve immediately. We used a Riesling for the white wine. All I can say is, it was yummy!

Looking for a Good Used Spinning Reel in Toronto

If FishingTheGTA isn't interested, I would like to get a price on getting one of these... Cheers -
Wow, pretty, pretty fish...

Crap, that's a big fish... safe to assume you weren't in the kayak?

What are the suggestions for iPhone GPS apps for the great outdoors, that include the Great White North? I have no idea how to research this elsewhere. Cheers

Roger has been taking that boat out on that corner of the Lake for decades, and he is in agreement with all of you, so don't worry, we won't be going far. Weather forecast being what it is, he says he knows of a few spots where we can fish from shore. Cheers

Apparently Rudy's daughter has a real thing for the cheeks, so he put them aside to take home for her.... there's actually less than half that fish in the pan!

Thanks for all the warm words guys. Nice place you got here! Cheers
-
Again, thanks for the advice, AND the warnings. I am well aware that we're beginners, and I came here asking for input. I'm just a novice, you guys have far more experience! Cheers
-
Thanks for the concern, and the warnings about high winds. Duly noted. We'll probably just stick to cruising around Snake Island, as advised. Or try fishing from shore, if it's that bad, I suppose. Anyhow, thanks for all the advice guys. If there's more to share, I'd love to hear it! Cheers

Awesome, just the kind of advice I'm looking for! Cheers

Ha! I'm not expecting anything specific, and I don't have a GPS, but even a "general idea" that would help us get started... would be amazing! Cheers

My buddy Roger and I are headed up to Crescent Beach on the south shore of Lake Simcoe early Thursday morning. We're both novice fisherman, barely know what we're doing, and have very little gear between us. His dad has an old aluminum boat with a 1954 5HP Johnson on it, so we're not going far. We haven't got a clue where to head, or what to do, so we'll probably just put some worms on a hook! OTOH, if anyone has some friendly advice on a general direction or location, or even perhaps bait, we're more than welcome to suggestions. Cheers

ROTFLMAO! I understand just how damn lucky I was! Cheers

Yes actually, yellow grub on a jig. My BiL said he had never seen a walleye so yellow... maybe that comes with age. I was nervous enough landing it, and he kept screaming "OMG it's a monster!" Lots of fun Cheers

When I caught the smallie in my profile pic, my BiL sent me this link cuz all we knew was that it was 20 1/4 inches... By that chart, yours is about 3 and 2/3 pounds. Cheers

Well, as you may recall, I'm really, really new to fishing, and get really, really excited by everything. Just have to share my pics from Sunday! We drove up to Bancroft VERY early on Sunday morning, stopped by the Apsley baitstore (what time do they get up?!?) launched the boat, and headed out in a light drizzle. My truly generous BiL surprised me with this little box of goodies as an early birthday present... (since I really have nothing else, I was tickled pink to get it!) We caught a few pike, several smallmouth bass, but the real catch of the day was this yellow walleye! I was *so* excited to land this six-and-a-half pound beauty... So, I finally got some more badly needed practice in cleaning fish. I've got a good teacher, so I'm getting the hang of it. We got a fire going, and Rudy cooked us up a nice shore lunch to go along with a few homemade IPA's. A nice night. It rained Sunday night, and we didn't catch anything worth keeping Monday morning. Still, I had a great couple of days, I'm a happy camper! Cheers
