  1. hey buck: canon all the way ! ! ! i used to be a nikon chauvanist thoughout my film years, but have subsequently switched to canon. over years i sarted with an agfa... real piece crap when digital was in its infancy. i then had a couple of nikon coolpix... not really bad, but the autofocus usually sucked in low light conditions. when i switched to digital slr, i tried the rebel and was really happy with it, so happy that i bought a rebel xti and kept the other as a backup. i do some semi professional / hobby work with them and i find the results to be excellent. all pictures that i have posted to the site have been with these cameras. recently, i bought my daughter the canon sd1000 digital elph camera for her birthday, and was very impressed with the results. clear, sharp, fast images from a little well machined housing. review http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/SD1000/SD1000A.HTM available at staples http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku....;AffixedCode=WW or henrys http://www.henrys.com/webapp/wcs/stores/se...p;itemID=191153 also check out the waterproof housing for the sd1000, which i am sure will save lots of grief when cameras fall overboard http://www.henrys.com/webapp/wcs/stores/se...p;itemID=191746 i am almost considering this setup for fishing trips etc. but i still am reluctant to give up the long lenses because you always are surprised by rare wildlife shots while out in the wilds. also worth looking into may be the olympus line. they are trying very hard to play with the 'big boys' again. i met a photographer on the olympus team going to shoot the masters and had a long talk with him. apparenty the new line of olympus point and shoot cameras with the integral image stabilization is quite respectable. http://www.henrys.com/webapp/wcs/stores/se...p;itemID=224426 the cameras highlighted are on the high end of your budget of $300, but i have found that below this price, the manufactured quality tends to drop substantially. you may be better of to find a used higher end model. anyway thats my two cents worth. .... nomad...
  2. hey johhny: how's it going... try moon river basin... there's a marina at the end of the moon river access road... $15 to park and launch, and a great bunch of folk.. don't mind giving them a bit a cash... lots and lots of water to cover... upstream towards the falls, good bass spots... out past the captain allen straits, as it opens up, theres a large area to the left... got some pike there last week... btw, on an out of production ( i think) beno. just like your brooks reefers i want to look at ! ! ! ! out a bit farther, some good smallmouth off reefs... .... nomad.....
  3. this year i broke down and replaced my heavy fibreglass with a kevlar... bought it from watson canoe on wendall ave in toronto. (east of weston, s of wilson).. he has a very small factory where he hand makes fibreglass & kevlar boats for sometimes half the price of more well known name brands... the quality is excellent IMHO and if you want, they can make some customizations... 'donated' the old one to the neighbours... even though i have a motor boat, i still love canoe fishing for the solitude and the access to better fishing in non-motorized lakes.. ..... nomad ....
  4. chartreuse 3" berkley power grub on a whistler jig, black or white.... have caught pretty well everything on it, from giant to miniature.. pike, walleye, bass, sunfish, rock bass, crappie, trout, perch, grass pickerel in all conditions in streams, lakes, shallow, from shore, from motor boats, from canoes... weaknesses.... -doesn't troll very well ( i hate trolling anyway )... -not that weedless...
  5. demineralized & distilled are pretty well the same thing.. just the process of getting to the end is different demineralized usually passes though a set reverse osmosis filters to extract the minerals, while with distilled, there is a evaporation / condensation process. actually to be precise, distilling is just one method of demineralization. whether to use tap or demineralized is also debatable and somewhat of a judgement call... in the "good' old days, evaporation cycles in lead acid batteries were more severe and thus the buildup of minerals on the battery plates was more significant...under normal charge cycles with newer batteries, the mineral deposit becomes less significant and the battery life is limited by other factors. kinda agree with johnbacon that boiling the water will just increase the mineral concentration. interesting about the chlorine... never heard of that before... what does this achieve ?? .... nomad ......
  6. hey big cliff: congratulations on your new venture... if you're down by the big smoke way on the 28th ( weston & black creek ), pm me and i have a few things you may be interested in having for the taking... two lawn mowers both running last year. one has a broken pull cord, and one is a bit sluggish and may just need tuning... also one stihl weed wacker...it starts and runs like stink for a bit, then coughs out.... .. i broke down and bought a new one... best wishes, ... nomad.....
  7. hey jb... great post... one of my favorite lakes... i should have called to hook up, cuz i was cruising around that area deciding where to go.... decided on twelve mile bay and it wasn't that great... only a couple of small smallmouth of sunken rock islands... anyway.. some other time.. ...nomad....
  8. six mile is one of the most consitant lakes for pike and bass..... some good bays and reefs for both... its quite big with a lot of areas to explore.. had the biggest pike of life here, but he spit the large bucktail... saw a guy pull a large & scrappy bowfin right from the park dock... still have to find the walleye though ..... nomad .....
  9. had one senko that was lying in the bottom of the boat since last year in the open... it still caught bass last week .... ( i forgot the package of fresh ones... ) LOL ..... nomad .......
  10. ... hey johnny.... hope the fishing is as hot as the girls .... or is it hope the girls as as hot as the fishing... ..... nomad....
  11. hey Fishnsled please forgive me for my rant, but i will rant anyway. your prediciment irks me somewhat extensively... .... if this was me , and i had the time, i would take this one to court.... upon reading your post, i read and re - read the section regarding the storage and transportation of fish, it make me angry that the officers are not out to enforce the spirit of the law but are rather at bes, showing how clever they can be or at worst, abusing their power. the intent of the law is to ensure that people don't bag scads and scads of sportfish and try to pass them off as other non sportfish, or otherwise exceed their limits. the law is not meant to test peoples knowledge of the law for the sake of testing their knowledge, but rather it is meant to protect the resource. having said that, his proper procedure should have been to say not 'who cleaned these fish', but rather ' who caught these fish' . he would then determine if anyone had actually exceeded their limit. considering the number of people in your party, for this section of water ( i am assuming it to be division 19) the only way you could have possibly be over your limit is if they were sturgeon or muskellunge. in that case he should have asked 'what kind of fish these were ' and then indicated that he was concerned that these may have indeed been muskelunge or sturgeon then asked you to prove otherwise. if you could not then prove otherwise then and only then should he have laid such a serious charge. secondly in the section of transporting of fish, it clearly says that there is an exception for immediate consumption. the term ' immediate' in the dictionary means "of or relating to the present time and place" meaning for this circumstance, the fish would have to be intended to be eaten in the near forseeable future, maybe one hour, maybe two hours, maybe overnight ? the definition of immediate being 'the skin needs to be on until the oil is hot in the pan' is his definition and his alone. in a court of law, this term immediate is clearly ambiguous at best, and if they intend to enforce this, this amiguity must be clarified. thirdly, the next circumstance would have been they were been prepared at an overnight accomodation for storage. from the sound of this post, they were clearly been prepared at an overnight accomodation. and as such is an exception to having to keep the skin on. the burden of proof would be on the crown to establish that their was a clear violation of the law. i hate the law being used as an excuse to generate revenues. that completly destroys the point of the laws and seriously encourages people to 'get away' with breaking laws. laws are meant to enable a just and stable society, not as a means of generating revenues. financial punishments for breaking the law are meant as disincentives to commit the same offence, and not to fund society in general. taxes are meant to generate revenues. i also agree strongly with lew on his point . again in the circumstance with lew.. those conservation officer had NO RIGHT to express his personal views that people from outside his arbitrary area cannot fish there. i wish you did have the time and resource to fight this one, but having said this, i know that i would be hard pressed to find the time for a trip back to fight this. maybe at some time in the future a terse worded letter to the member of parliament citing discrimination of non quebecers in quebec may be in order. their actions i believe almost bordered on criminal police harrassment. i'm very sorry that you have decided not to visit quebec for this reason, as i believe it is our right, as long as it still part of this nation for us to visit in a law abiding fashion. why should we as law abinding citizens of this nation be subjected to abuse by those hired to protect the very ones who are going out of their way to maintain this society. maybe as time progresses and we see that this is an ongoing and endemic problem we could initiate some action.. having said all this, i am appalled at circumstances as some members have described earlier of poachers on lake simcoe clearly and brazenly flouting the law by returning time after time to catch quantities of whitefish in batches. these are clearly violations of both the letter and spirits of both the regulations as well as the intent of preserving the resource. i believe there is are very strong principles involved in all these incidents. i do not believe that these incidents should be serving as a 'lesson' to anyone. from what i have read, no one here has done anything wrong. i could rant on and on, but this is the holiday weekend and the lakes are calling... ... nomad....
  12. pretty much agree with the other posts.. it's quite far north, but many cottages on a small lake... some smallmouth in various areas.... the proverbial stock rainbow trout were nowhere to be seen, even jigging deep during evening hours... .....nomad
  13. hey johnny, both the lure collection and fishing... nomad
  14. hey johnny: seemed to be a pretty productive day out there.... well documented and all... im quite busy, but one day we must meet up... heading up north today, havn't decided exactly where yet.. nomad...
  15. here is a brief synopsis of my provincial park experiences... balsam lake... walleye, muskie you need to find the reefs for the walleye... rice lake.... the old serpent mound provincial park now run by the natives... still a good location for walleye emily on pigeon lake... had significant sized large mouth bass right close to the park.. never tried going to the main part of the lake for walleye tho' murphy's point.access to the rideau system .. again, very large bass close to the park in the weeds... finlayson pt. a bit farther that your 3 hour radius, more like 5, but on lake temagami, the centre of paradise... main lake takes a long time to learn however, since it is so big with many bays.. lots of walleye, smallmouth, pike and lake trout of very significant sizes... saw 20 lb walleye taken out at night... myself got a 15lb walleye on one of the back lakes... lake st. peter... good supply of smaller smallmouth within the actual lake... supposedly stocked rainbows, but no sight of those ! ! ! presqu'ille: good sized pike in presqu’ille bay, especially trolling at the mouth, into the main lake... water access to bay of quinte through the murray canal... sibbald point... access to lake simcoe, a chapter in itself... perch and pike toward the island north of the park.. ivy lea, not a provincial park, but part of the st. lawrence parks... excellent bass fishing in super clear waters.. six mile lake... very consistent producer of medium to pike with some very large... consistent producer of smallmouth.. killbear... big water park, fairly hard to fish.because on georgian bay.... some very large smallmouth bass on the eastern shore of the killbear point tho’.. restoule... deep water lake. mainly lake trout deep, hard to fish... awenda... lake in park has no motor rule... good for canoe fishing for bass... cheers & happy fishing and experiencing the great Ontario outdoors ! ! ! ! ! ..... nomad...
  16. hey johnny: cool collection of lures... i have a weakness for classic lures... will pay $$$ for any brooks reefers you have.. they are a real sentimental favorite. send me a pm if interested. ..... nomad .....
  17. hey jen: awesome pics for an awesome time.. i have litererally travelled the world and temagami is probably my favorite spot... tossup with vancouver isle ... but i think temagami wins by a hair nomad
  18. In the south, try Rice Lake. Good for small boats except when there is a strong east / west wind. Can be very prolific, or very slow depending on the day. Balsam Lake close to Barrie has some, but a lot of exploration is needed. Just a couple.
  19. Sunday, Jun 3, 07... back to Six Mile Lake, one of my favorites. Been going there for years, but this time, I tried out a new bay that I had never been to. Very productive... I had always found it to be one of the most consitant lakes. There are quite a few areas producing pike and bass. I got there early evening and cruised around a bit. Hit the bay 'round 7:00pm and noticed in 6 ' of water, large clumps of 'stand up' cabbage weeds. Tossed in the Mepps Bucktail spinner ( bucktail spinners are probably my favorite pike presentation ) and had my breath taken away with a rapid flash of silver hitting the lure. They seemed to be very active, and one went crazy when hooked. After three landed & released with a few miscelaneous missed strikes later, I fooled around with some other baits. These included a 'walk the dog' jointed bait, large plastic jigs and various crank bait. None produced very well, with the large jigs only getting a couple of bass, promply released. Returning to the bucktail I started a retreive, then let it sink into weed pockets like it was a jig. Following a deft, quick jerk, another pike hit. I attached a pic of a typical fish. Since I haven't rigged up a cool camera jig like some of the guys and was fishing alone, the fish is dangling somewhat unceremoniously on the end of the rod. Also got some pics of a heron fishing . 20. 1. Very consistant pike & bass lake.... one of my favorite ! ! ! had probably my life biggest pike on in this body of water... just saw the HUGE fat tail on my bucktail spinner before he broke away still looking for the walleye there tho' 2. No, Gloucester pool is below a set of waterfalls on one of the south arms of the lake..
