  1. you want to know if your reel grease is acceptable for the cold, put the tube in your freezer at home for a couple hours and then check and see how stiff it is. As for slick 50, "brokeback mountain lube"
:lol::lol: I will stay away from b b m lube then. They say it works like a charm though,as for who?Im not asking, and dont want to know.I ll clean the reels out and lube them with gear oil and a drop lucas additive. That should do it in cold temps. These reels I have at room temp there fine.
  2. whatever you get , take it apart and clean all the grease out of it and lube it with oil so it doesnt freeze up

i like some of rapalas new ice gear havent used any of it yet though

So thats why my ice reels are jamming up and hard to reel in.I figured an ice reel would be lubed with sub zero grease.Stuppid me as a tech the reels are proably packed with generic grease.Ill try 75w90 syn gear oil,or even 2 stroke winter oil.Slick 50 should do the trick. :dunno::dunno::dunno: Ky jelly maybe,I will be fishing for something with those reels, I ll check the home reg and ask the wife if its open season yet.

  3. I've noticed over the years that oldtimers spell the Canadian pickerAl with the A whereas the American pike related species is spelled pickerEl with the E. I'm a few months from 60, dad is 83 and he tells of catching the blue pickeral in the 40's out of Port Colborne and Port Maitland, my first recollestions of fishing where the late 50's there and by then they were gone/extinct. There is a bluish phase of Walleye native to some lakes but the true Blue Walleye was a separate species.
It was in the mid to late 70s in caledonia where i seen them caught, only in one spot, and small.I havent seen them since.I may ask a friend to get the old pictures out from way back when.Im sure theres a blue pickerel in one of the pictures.
  4. thanks guys,I saw pictures of the accident 2 nights ago. They werent published yet.How devestating just before the holidays.I work as a truck and coach tech working mobile.I fear for myself at times esp on the 401.This picture has me really thinking about what I do for a living.Ive just about soiled myself a few times out there. To you my friend adam I bid you farewell, and allow god to bless your soul.Rest in peace my friend.Vince

  5. In May of 2008 I bought a brand new boat and motor and it has been good up until a few weeks ago!

I took my boat back to the dealer to have the bottom gear oil replaced and to check out why my engine was overheating. So I get a call and the service guy tells me that it is the impeller (what I thought) but it is not covered by the warranty! So I have to fork out $120 to get this back to normal again, I wouldn't have an issue with that if it has been used a lot, but 25hrs on the motor in two seasons and winterized and maintained properly. They recomend every 300 hrs or 3 years that the impeller hsa to be changed.

So I sent Mercury a e-mail and they sent me back a generic copy paste crap response.

Anyone else have problems with there impellers going so quickly?

Did you run the motor without the ears or in a pail?If you ran it for a breif moment wiyhout any water etc, youll burn in up quickly.Or even if you ran aground and picked sand and dirt.Mine went right away when I first got the boat,2nd outing.I replaced it.about $25 bucks for the impeller, plus gear oil.And I also replace the thermostat at the same time.Try calling dewilt honda in hamilton and ask for young dan in parts, ask for his advice, they will guide you in the right path for waranty issues.hes an awesome guy to deal with, and extremely honest.I know for a fact.Thats where I go for mercruiser parts. And no I dont work there.
  6. The true blue doesn't grow as big as the yellow walleye and has a larger eye higher up on the head. Kinda like frog eyes.

thats the puppy. We used to catch them on the grand, less than a lbs.But there were chain markings on the sides of them, from what I recall.Never seen them there in over 30 yrs.
  7. With Ginny's blessings I managed to scoop myself up a new toy for a good price... I know I'm going to hear "I told you so" from a few of you guys... My daughter asked me if we could set up our Clam 2000 in the living room and I didn't even hesitate!

So, being new to owning a hut of any kind. What do I need in order to have an easy going, and safe trip out with the kid?

Happy Holidays, and bring on the ICE!

    Cheers,

    Ryan

I have the same hut,and a black cat heater,a peak1 back packing stove and lantern. And for the kids entertainment a fish finder and an aquaview.got to keep them occupied when fishing is slow.
  8. I absolutely love the whirlpool. The scenery there is magnificent. Really tempted to get down there myself this winter for the steelhead. It’s great you could hook up with Vinnimon. A few years ago, CharlieD took my dad and I down to the pool for our first trip there for steelhead...I will forever appreciate that gesture and he’s probably the reason I have yet to blank down there for the bows.

I still remember my first trip down there for carp like it was yesterday as well as my first trip there for steelhead…It really pays to chat with the locals who fish down there for the steelhead…They’ve shown nothing but kindness and hospitality to me each trip I’ve gone down during steelhead season and gave me great tips. They put me onto some minnow patterns that worked great (like Gulp and some local streamer ties). The walk down and then up again is always worth it in my books

The whirlpool has quickly become one of my new happy places :D

That rock you were standing on,In the spring you may see some muskies lurking around, just below your feet.
  9. There apparently was a fishery for chain pickerel in erie at a point of time, first introduced in New York. I have only ever seen one caught and it was in a trib of lake erie
Ive seen seen a few caught, and they were localized in the trib,about30yrs ago.very localized.only caught in one spot.
  10. A person I have known for a short time that I consider as a friend.A father.A happy go lucky guy, bringing joy to whoever he surrounds. He was to my eye and happy man, loved every bit of life, his family and friends, and his work.Goodbye my friend we will meet again someday.God bless your sole my friend, Adam.401 tilbury accident. Some people on this forum may know him,a dunnville area gentleman.May god rest your sole.

  12. We used to catch the odd one on the grand.markings of a pike, but looks like a pickerel.Does anyone know about this?I havent seen this species caught since I was a kid.Are they still around,a crossbreed? :dunno::dunno: Any info woud be great. A blue pickerel perhaps?,That I heard from time to time.

  13. This summer in Dunnville I was fishing with my 3 year old Jacob when he dropped his scooby doo fishing rod in the water (5 minutes earlier I was thinking about attaching it to the boat). It instantly went under while we were trolling. I tied a deep diver on and casted to where I thought it would be and caught it on the first try :D

I am glad I did because the tears were insane.

A few years back my daughter threw her barbie rod into the lake. Her excuse,so the fish can play with it.A year later at the same spot on the lake, she asked if she can have her rod back. The next day someone snagged onto it.
